"This illustrates perfectly how government bailouts disincentive responsible behavior." -- it's not just bailouts that lead to irresponsible behavior, but any form of giving someone something for nothing. - Craig Eddy
"Talking to top economic advisors about how we're gonna create jobs" The only jobs you can create, Pres. Obama, are government jobs, and that's not what the economy ever needs. - Charles LePage
"We've got an unprecedented crisis, or at least something that we have not seen since the Great Depression." Statistically, so far, that is absolutely not true. - Charles LePage
"So part of what we have to measure against is what didn't happen and not just what has happened." How do you measure against something that did not happen? How do you measure the imaginary? - Charles LePage
Government jobs are the worst thing we could get right now - Christian Burns
"And the consensus is this: that we have to do whatever it takes to get this economy moving again, that we're gonna have to spend money now to stimulate the economy." Money spent by the government DOES NOT STIMULATE THE ECONOMY. - Charles LePage
"Those are part and parcel of an effort to regain America's moral stature in the world." Our enemies care not about our "moral stature." They will target us and hate us no matter what we do or not do. - Charles LePage
And worse, if our "moral stature" hints at a lack of intestinal fortitude, they'll hit us even harder. - Craig Eddy
"There's a new book out about FDR's first 100 days and what you see in FDR that I hope my team can-- emulate, is not always getting it right, but projecting a sense of confidence, and a willingness to try things. And experiment in order to get people working again." FDR made the depression worse. He made it last longer than it needed to. Emulating FDR would be the wrong direction to go in. - Charles LePage
could you elaborate on his stunning misunderstanding of facts and naïveté? honestly curious. i'm not an economist by any stretch, but isn't he simply espousing keynesian ideas? you may disagree with keynes, but surely he's within the realm of respectable discourse. i've looked at various economists' blogs, and i'm not seeing any commentary on his interview nearly as harsh as yours. - Jesse Baer
Jesse, my observations had nothing to do with his economic policies (we'll save that for another discussion). He said on day 1 of his administration he will gather the Joint Chiefs and his national security advisors and begin planning for troop withdrawal from Iraq. His timetable will have devastating results. The devastation can be mitigated progressively by a more responsible timetable. Also, he said he wants to wipe out Al Qaeda once and for all. That's a lofty goal that, in theory, we would all like to accomplish. But he seems to think it can actually. There will always be another terrorist group gunning for us. That's why we have to stay vigilant. - Gregory Pittman

@Gregory - wow, some serious sour grapes. You'd have some credibility on the subject if you were calling Bush naive, but instead, you supported Bush 100% - Dave Hodson
Dave, whoa there buckaroo. Sour grapes? Do you know me well enough to assume I have sour grapes? Yeah, didn't think so. I didn't vote for Bush in 2004 and, for the record, I didn't vote for McCain this time around. So there are no sour grapes at all. Just an honest and objective look at the actions Obama says he'll start taking on "day one of my administration." - Gregory Pittman
So did mine. I left Ryan Grant (TD + 140 yards) and Jonathan Stewart (TD + 120+ yards) on the bench. Ouch. Oh... and I started Reggie Bush (OUT). - Louis Gray
I somehow managed to win today despite the fact that Philip Rivers clowned it up. - Kevin Bondelli
AJ's Uggs did well today: Tyler Thigpen and Frank Gore anchors to the team. Should have played Slaton, but hopefully Lynch will come through Monday night. - AJ Kohn
Slaton was huge today. Didn't see that coming. Luckily the guy I was playing against left him on the bench. - Kevin Bondelli
My opponent this week started three Chargers (one was LT, but the other two amounted to about 7 points each). I think he was trying to throw the game... - Craig Eddy
I had Slaton in the first half of our league (picked him up on waivers). Lost him in our post week 8 redraft. - Louis Gray
I started out 7-1 but will now fall to 7-4 - Mike Reynolds
@Louis what is a "post week 8 redraft?" your league redrafts mid-season? - Scott Jarkoff
Woohoo! I wonder why no one is talking about the horrible effects high gas prices had on the economy. The Democrats loved the high gas prices, thinking that would force us into alternatives, forgetting that it substantially drove up the cost of everything! - Chris Mayer
Charles - Uh, that sounds a little violent, no? - Steve Isaacs
Where eliminate means peacefully point out error of their ways in a loving manner so they put down their hate and feel the love again. I gonna be beautiful, man. - WorldofHiglet
I do not believe for a second Pres. Obama would inflict or even promote violence against those who disagree with him. The election, however, shows he knows how to inspire dark emotions in those who support him, and that will no doubt lead to situations once he takes office. - Charles LePage
Steve: Noise is good for video market. Ignore these! ; ) - Erhan Erdogan
I love that about Youtube- that we take the good threads and put them here, because there it's just tons of wackos. But dependably juvenile and lame - anna awesomesauce
Charles - "Dark Emotions"?? Hmm... Didn't seem very dark when I was in the middle of the street on St. Marks in New York with hundreds and hundreds of people stopping traffic to dance and sing in the streets. I've never seen so many happy people in my life. Didn't seem so dark, Sir, not at all. - Steve Isaacs
I generally love how Obama is putting himself out there. He doesn't want to hide behind the big desk. He actually wants us, the people, to be more involved. Now THERE'S a concept. I'm still very excited to see what he's going to do while in office. - ::Kristen::
"I spent six years as an elections lawyer. I handled a lot of very wacked election canvasses and recounts. One thing they all had in common: when new votes were found, they generally went both ways -- a few for one candidate and a few for the other candidate. It didn't quite follow the polling, but then close races only happen at the 50-50 margin.
Here's something that never happened: the votes did not all go 100% for one candidate except in the two instances where there was only one misplaced ballot discovered.
In Minnesota, though, the votes are all going for Al Franken — pretty much all 600 of them. That defies statistical probability." - Charles LePage

Al Franken has to win, for the good of the nation and our new President, even if votes have to be manufactured. - Charles LePage
"A woman has been charged over an epic drinking session where she apparently stole drinks, stripped naked, kicked and bit police and flooded her cell.
Lori Brutsche-Ely, was arrested on Halloween night after reports that she was stealing beer from customers in a nightclub.
She also exposed herself to a band playing at the venue, picked fights and refused to leave, claim police.
When police found her she was completely naked and was shouting at security guards outside the Mint nightclub, the US newspaper Idaho Mountain Express reported." - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)

I don't use like as bookmarks. if I'm paying attention it is generally something I don't like and I don't want to have to answer that question as to why. while it is good to create dialog... well... liking some kid getting sold drugs by a public official isn't a like if you know what I mean. it is a public thing here. sometimes it is useful to bookmark with more then one service and use the other service as a place to put things that you want to record... but don't want to make public. - ⓃⓄⒶⒽ ⒹⒶⓋⒾⒹ ⓈⒾⓂⓄⓃ

"Ocean Power Technologies announced Thursday that it will be installing a water-power buoy system to tie into Hawaii's Oahu Island power grid.
The New Jersey-based company makes ocean buoys that harness the energy of ocean waves to generate electricity that is then sent back to shore via underwater cable.
Through a partnership with the U.S. Navy, Ocean Power has been developing technology that could supplement electricity needs for the military in Hawaii ." - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)

That's not fair. Microsoft never said this was a major version release. It's 6.1. The underpinnings of Vista are sound so there is no reason to change them. They are focusing less on features and more on tuning and performance, which is exactly what they need to do with a mature product like Windows. - John Denver
An interesting point, however is the difference between technically recoverable oil (which is mentioned in the article) and economically recoverable "The United States Geological Survey uses the terms technically and economically recoverable resources when making its petroleum resource assessments. Technically recoverable resources represent that proportion of assessed in-place petroleum that may be recoverable using current recovery technology, without regard to cost. Economically recoverable resources are technically recoverable petroleum for which the costs of discovery, development, production, and transport, including a return to capital, can be recovered at a given market price." - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
heh. in 2007 we imported about 10 mil barrels of oil every day. so this new find, if it actually pans out - at reasonable cost - will last *at most* about 12 months. sorry - no big deal. [http://www.reuters.com/article...] - MikeAmundsen
So I guess the question becomes: how much are you willing to pay for your gas in order to be right on this point? Will you pay $10 a gallon for the privilege of saying we've got plenty of oil? $20? $50? Just because there's oil there doesn't mean it's feasible for crude production. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
@Tina: and how much are you willing to spend (time, money, eco-system) to get another 4bn barrels? at some point, we've gotta stop 'digging in the couch for loose change' and just move on. and the longer we wait, the more pain we'll endure. - MikeAmundsen
The problem is, we've approached energy like idiots in the U.S. We could have been building nuclear power plants, but we didn't. We could have been drilling for more oil, but we didn't. We could have been building more refineries, but we didn't. Now we are at the mercy of a world that doesn't like us very much, even with Obama in the White House. The rest of the world has a firm grip on our finances, our energy needs, and our real estate. Hope we had fun while it lasted. - Charles LePage
big ups to Tina for sussing out the diff btwn "technically" and "economically" vis-a-vis USGS. - MikeAmundsen
That's just one field in ND. There are other reports saying there is 250 bn total in ND alone. There is 3-4 tn bbls in shale oil in the US alone. More than the entire world reserve to date. Yes it is expensive to get right now. But it shows peak oil is a long way off. - Steve Olson
@Tina and Mike: +32. It's startling to me that people cling to this idea of drilling out way out of this problem. It's like asking someone on the spot to tell you how many 9s there are between 1 and 100. Most get stuck in the pattern of counting and miss the answer. We need to find new energy sources and become the OPEC of alternative energy. - AJ Kohn
Ditto Alex's props to Tina and Mike. For some reason I'm not too terribly worried yet. We are by nature lazy ass americans, but when push finally comes to shove in our pocketbooks we are quite creative. The answer isn't ethanol, or more drilling, it's something someone hasn't quite thought of but when the profit signs out way the investment it'll be found. - Steve Craft
Steve, what figures are you seeing as the world reserve? Because, I'm seeing as of 2007 1,137 billion barrels in reserve just in the top 12 oil reserves of the world http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O... Also, the EIA shows a production of 84 million barrels *per day* in 2007 (which is almost 31 billion barrels produced for 2007) http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/ip... - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
AJ, who is suggesting we drill our way out of a problem? It's startling to me that people cling to this idea that we must not drill for oil while at the same time build nuclear power plants and find other energy sources. We can do it all at the same time, if we only have the courage and the nerve, which we don't. - Charles LePage
In 2007 a major subsalt oil field off Brazil was announced. Several more finds have since been announced with estimates of 50bln to 80bln barrels of recoverable oil. Also, subsalt formations have been found to be reliable predictors of oil. Though typically very deep, about 15,000 feet deep, the first Brazil field is due to come on line in 2013-14. http://tinyurl.com/5powwt , http://tinyurl.com/5vklbr - Peter Simard
@Charles: I'm all for drilling, but simply not at the expense of investing in alternate energy. Many position it as an either/or proposition and others seem to put too much emphasis on drilling and too little on alternates. - AJ Kohn
I've never met/read anyone who said it was an either/or proposition. But many of the "alternative" technologies simply aren't viable and thus don't deserve subsidizing. We have long ignored the one truly viable (as of now) alternative: nuclear. - Craig Eddy
I'd like to meet the people who are proposing an either or. One problem is, we just had an election where neither candidate seemed interested or serious in energy independence. Hopefully if the Republicans can get their act together, they can offer some real viable ideas in the future. - Charles LePage
@Charles: gotta give it to you on the last point. neither party has impressed me with clear thinking on our current energy mess. i'm looking to anyone who offers real progress toward a non-fossil fuel future that doesn't require a permanent dependence on creating pollution that is measured in half-life. - MikeAmundsen
I'd love to see someone do more than just talk about moving us from dependence on foreign oil. There's lots of talk and hand wringing, and little action, moving us forward. - Paul W. Swansen

"President George W Bush intervened in the long-running dispute, citing national security interests.
In its 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court said the navy needed to conduct realistic training exercises to respond to potential threats.
The court did not deal with the merits of the claims put forward by the environmental groups.
It said, rather, that federal courts abused their discretion by ordering the navy to limit sonar use in some cases and to turn it off altogether in others." - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
