I believe that fantasy in the meaning of imagination is very important. We shouldn’t stick too close to everyday reality but give room to the reality of the heart, of the mind, and of the imagination. - http://kristianfreeman.com/post...

I spent a bit of time tonight playing Hideo Kojima’s second game, Snatcher, on a Sega CD emulator. The emulator was decent enough, though it could benefit from a physical controller, which I plan to implement with a bluetooth PS3 Sixaxis.

The game itself is really remarkable. It wears its cyberpunk influences very clearly, from the obvious Blade Runner-derived storyline to the snatchers’ clear modeling inspiration in the non-humanized T-800 in Terminator (i.e. the metal version of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character) . But this isn’t a bad thing — the game itself seems fairly unique in that I can’t remember many cyberpunk games throughout the years. Deus Ex is probably the closest analogue in terms of setting, but a storyline like this seems pretty rare.

Things worth noting:

The soundtrack is awesome: it has the awesome 80s MIDI feel going that I miss in games. In the cutscenes, it plays some “real" music in the form of electro-jazz, which is also fairly cool.

Voice acting. A huge portion of the game is voice acted, which is crazy for a fairly old game. Kojima does his usual deal of showing the actors for each character as you would in a movie, quite like Metal Gear Solid.

The graphics are cool in a retro way, but also pretty visually impressive. Especially with the push towards faux-retro games recently, this game could have been released this year and probably would be considered in that vein.

I haven’t played enough of it yet to really delve into gameplay or storyline besides the basics, but I’m impressed with it enough so far that I thought I’d grab a couple screenshots for posterity’s sake.
