Ok Gentlemen. Time for you to 'flesh' out the rest of the book. Post your chapters when they are ready. I'll get Amazon.com on the horn and alert them that they might have another Hairy Pothead book craze coming their way!

"Sagar, I thought All Reeder allowed for was importing your Google Reader or RSS feeds. Are you saying that you can connect it to Twitter and Facebook and have it import the content from those services?"
- Mark Krynsky
Mark -- what is your favorite news reader at the moment? I find myself still coming back to Feedly much more than all the others. And I have recently rediscovered the virtues of Google Alerts. I've run into a major problem with My6Sense: the algorithm after a time over-narrows my news flow around a very few sources and topics. It needs work.

Hey Sean....currently I'd say my favorite is Zite which has been great at helping me discover new stories outside of the normal tech news outlets. I also like Tweeted Times.
- Mark Krynsky
Mark -- I'm an Android user, so don't have access to Flipboard and Zite, which, I know, both have generated a huge buzz. I may need to give in and buy an iPad. I need to look at Tweeted Times again.

"Thanks for your perspective and thoughts from a startup point of view. I can appreciate all of your points and understand scaling is the primary concern of any hot startup who see's hockey stick growth. But I think it's still valuable to collect the feedback because once you stabilize iterating new features will become a necessity or you'll lose the users who don't make it past the honeymoon phase. How that gets baked into the overall timing and strategy I'm sure is dependant on many factors but I don't think turning a blind eye is the right attitude either. Thanks for the info on the lame voting feature, I wasn't aware of that. I'm not sure where I may have led you to think that giving a single user the ability to skip songs is a good idea but I don't believe that is good. In fact I was in a room where the mod of the room was skipping everyone's songs and I think that's a great way to empty a room."

True: 1) Perspective. I've you live it 24/7, hard to get a real world perspective on how it fits into today's world. All to often those people speak like it's 2-5 years later, not present day. 2) Longevity. If you chase the dragon constantly, you'll get burnt out. Experience requires time, not depth of use. 3) I'm sure the CEO of Coca Cola drinks water, wine and juice...... So the reverse question: Can a social media strategist be great if ALL they do is use social media?
- Johnny
First what the hell is a social media strategist? There are really two methods, interaction(customer service) and broadcasting(marketing). This gives you a spectrum to work with, as well as multiple channels/tools which can be used for different things. If you can look at how the various channels/tools work, and can understand which methods would work better with each, then you should be able be a good strategist, even if you don't actually use them.
- Jimminy IS Everybody
Interesting points Johhny. If you only live it from 9-5 then how will you gain all the insights if only focused on a vertical mission though? I feel that to truly be great at something you need to be passionate about it both professionally and personally which kills your second point because with passion comes longevity.
- Mark Krynsky
Jimminy, (I didn't say expert) within this context a strategist is someone who can look at the goals of a company (and these goals can vary quite a bit) and then determine the best methods to come up with a plan that outlines the resources, budget, and methods necessary to execute that plan by utilizing social services. That person also needs to know how to effectively measure the activity against those goals and then tweak the plan accordingly.
- Mark Krynsky
I like to think of myself as being pretty good with this social media stuff, but I've only been able to see the big picture because of previous marketing, customer service, and direct sales experience. So, I'd have to say this is true. Social media is simply a set of tools which are drop dead simple to use. The application of these tools is what matters. I do believe passion is important, but only a piece of the puzzle. Also, you used the word "much," which leaves a lot of wiggle room :)
- Rahsheen?
Passion drives longevity, it doesn't bring longevity. If you are so close to something and don't have an adequate break time, you will burn out. Do we need to roll out the lists of actors, sport stars and musicians that ended up just flipping out cause they didn't have adequate outlets? If you look at the truly great sports stars and actors, they have outlets and other pursuits that...

- Johnny
Rah, good points as well but I don't think you can minimize it to "simply a set of tools which are drop dead simple to use". There are many many ways that things can be implemented and in turn need to integrate with each other. Execution isn't always simple. For instance you could have a voting campaign on your website around videos hosted on YouTube, that need to integrate into an...

Mark, I didn't think I was talking about an expert. I think just about any strategist, could do it with an understanding of customer service and marketing impact. Any strategist has to know his tools and be able to know or at least have an idea of how to use them effectively. While I didn't mention goals, that should be a given, otherwise you can't develop a strategy in the first place,...

- Jimminy IS Everybody
Ah, true. It does take a certain eye to see how to integrate things. That's actually something I'm always thinking about. The individual tools are usually simple, but the execution can definitely get away from you.
- Rahsheen?
I think we have to make a distinction here between actual activity in social media, and simply having a passion. Some people don't actually engage that much in social media on a personal level, but their passion drives them to think about it all the time, which probably makes them more valuable. Thinking about how to get the most bang for your buck with each check-in, update, or blog post is more important than simply trying to gain Twitter followers or share every waking moment of your life.
- Rahsheen?
Jimminy, I may be mis-interpreting you but if you're saying that any strategist, even one without any knowledge of social media services can be effective I'd have to disagree. I believe there are enough differences and nuances to the medium to require someone with experience working within the bounds of them.
- Mark Krynsky
Mark, I'm saying they definitely need to understand customer service and marketing, and have at least some understanding of the various tools. I definitely don't think that someone with no knowledge or understanding, would be able to do it. But I don't think it would take to much, if you had an actual strategist, with customer service and marketing knowledge, and showed them the basics of the services.
- Jimminy IS Everybody
Jimminy...ok fair enough. Thanks everyone for chiming in. I had my own thoughts and was just curious how others thought about this. Special shout out to Cristo...I am honored by your presence and contribution as well.

Yes, pretty impressive how much they got right about me that I already know which then gives them the validity for me to learn about the things I didn't.
