During the 1990s, when the World Wide Web was bright and shiny and new, it exerted a strong centrifugal force on us. And that landscape felt not only new but liberating. But that view was an illusion. Even back then, the counterforce to the web's centrifugal force - the centripetal force that would draw us back toward big, central information stores - was building. Hyperlinks were creating feedback loops that served to amplify the popularity of popular sites, feedback loops that would become massively more powerful when modern search engines, like Google, began to rank pages on the basis of links and traffic and other measures of popularity. Navigational tools that used to emphasize ephemera began to filter it out. Roads out began to curve back in. Wikipedia provides a great example of the formative power of the web's centripetal force. . At heart a vast exercise in cut-and-paste paraphrasing (it explicitly bans original thinking. Wikipedia is the lazy man's link... - katepe

2009: 75 years of Photo Perajica and 85 of family photography

pa cestitke ane, respektabilne godine zbilja. fotka me podsjeca na moje tete i striceve i stari split... - katepe
Dražen Peraica known as Perajica (1945 - 2008)?!?!?! Ovo me bas rastuzilo. Grad mi nestaje. Znam, se radja i neki novi, al meni stran i nepoznat. - ivana

- ana

We have found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people actually have flu symptoms. Of course, not every person who searches for "flu" is actually sick, but a pattern emerges when all the flu-related search queries from each state and region are added together. We compared our query counts with data from a surveillance system managed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and discovered that some search queries tend to be popular exactly when flu season is happening. By counting how often we see these search queries, we can estimate how much flu is circulating in various regions of the United States. - katepe

The definition, based on a study of more than 1,300 problematic computer users, classifies as addicts those who spend at least six hours online a day and have shown at least one symptom in the past three months. - katepe
- katepe
Szasz opet kicks ass: "The life-process model of addiction is the view that addiction is not a disease but rather a habitual response and a source of gratification and security that can be understood only in the context of social relationships and experiences. This model of addiction is in direct opposition to the disease model of addiction. The proponents of the life-process model argue that the biological mechanisms that might account for addictive behavior have not been identified and thus do not support using the term disease, preferring to emphasize the individual's ability to overcome addiction by repairing relationships and personal strength of will." http://rdr.to/zJ - Goran Zec

Section 11 of that license now (essentially) permits certain wikis to be relicensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (v3.0) license. Wikipedia community now has the choice to relicense Wikipedia under a Creative Commons license. A fundamental flaw in the Free Culture Movement to date is that its most important element -- Wikipedia -- is licensed in a way that makes it incompatible with an enormous range of other content in the Free Culture Movement. Richard Stallman deserves enormous credit for enabling this change to occur. what Richard said in 2002 in a different context: "If we don’t want to live in a jungle, we must change our attitudes. We must start sending the message that a good citizen is one who cooperates when appropriate...." - katepe

This paper has three goals. The first is to introduce the “knowledge game”, a new, simple and yet powerful tool for analysing some intriguing philosophical questions. The second is to apply the knowledge game as an informative test to discriminate between conscious (human) and conscious-less agents (zombies and robots), depending on which version of the game they can win. And the third is to use a version of the knowledge game to provide an answer to Dretske’s question “how do you know you are not a zombie?”. - katepe

One of Hackety Hack's sincere pledges is to make the most common code very easy and short. Downloading an MP3 should be one line of code. A blog should be very few. Presently, Ruby is the only language taught by Hackety Hack. And it's a great one to start with. Ruby was born in Japan, but has found a wealth of friends across the world. As you can see above, Ruby is a combination of simple words and punctuation. - katepe

Progress as a notion did not arrive until the 17th century or so, when it appeared in the West during the Enlightenment. Progress is a child of science and technology. place? What is the origin of our progress? There are several factors but chief among them is the invention of what we loosely call science. scholar Joseph Needham - Needham’s Question: if China could invent the most important inventions of all time, the compass, gunpowder and paper, why couldn’t they invent the scientific method as wel? - katepe

A self-described "atheist of technology," his motto is "obey and resist." . Information mapping our lives -- process, principles, concept, fact -- we have all become measurable. In Virilio's writing what Hannah Arendt once described as "modern world alienation" rides the whirling tip of history as the spirit of pure negation that is everywhere today. Negative politics, negative subjectivity, negative culture. It is impossible to escape the technological accident that has become us. ? What characterizes contemporary politics is the unstable mixture of speed information and slow movements - katepe

This historic U.S. election already fulfilled its promise of change even before the final ballots were cast. Never before had we seen the internet used so heavily in the political campaigning process. . In many ways, what we saw online as voting drew to a close was a little bit of history being made, too. Tor is a software project that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol. - katepe
