http://www.fftogo.com/ and http://friendfeed.com/iphone/ are great for mobile FriendFeeding. Also if you do want to keep history you can turn off "chat off the record". - Benjamin Golub
Yeah, those are good mobile web interfaces, but the real win of IM for me is the real-time/notification aspect. I haven't considered how I might overload GMail's history to manage unprocessed items, but I may look in to that. - Kurtiss Hare
