"Great post Jimmy! I'm now located in the SF Bay Area and am starting to network with folks and everything you said it spot on. However, I think another tip for getting out there is simply...to get out there! If you want to accomplish a mission of being known, then you need to make appearances. Stop by happy hours, meet ups, etc. and just say hi. Walk around & mingle or simply go out of your way and chat. Have an interesting name tag and chances area you'll walk into an unexpected conversation and meet some new professional contacts." - Kenneth

"Jared - Thanks for visiting my blog and hope you enjoyed reading what I write about. I agree that Twitter is just another platform that can enable a company to keep in touch with their customers. But I'm guessing that a majority of people STILL see it as a means of simply saying "I'm washing clothes" or "I just checked out the latest book from the library" or something to that effect. Companies are seeing people on Twitter write those types of things, but are not fully understanding the conversational power it has to effect the brand." - Kenneth

"Jon - I think that you're absolutely right. When engaging with social media tools like Twitter, you can't "force" your marketing efforts on your followers. It's like you said...you need to "actively take the conversation". That's it: a conversation. These days it's not about instant sales, but forming rapport to create not only the sale, but brand foot soldiers that will go out in the world and on the web and spread the good word." - Kenneth

"Thanks Tim. I appreciate your comments. Sharing is the best way to get more traffic. I suppose you could use SEO techniques but those take time to implement. I'm not advocating moving away from SEO, but instead supplement your search methods with a share method and get more traffic now before people start to search for your content." - Kenneth

"@Dave and @Ernesto I completely agree with your assessment and think that if you're using Facebook for professional reasons, you shouldn't make it so "stale" that people start to think they're interacting with a robot. However, the conflict here seems to be HOW MUCH personal should be there? I started using Facebook as a personal means to communicating with my friends and it's slowly grown to encompass my professional network and many of my (now former) co-workers. Obviously I'm holding the basic rule of avoiding any work-related conflict of interest from appearing on my FB page, but there goes the same issue...how much is too much?" - Kenneth

"Thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely trying to meet up with more people to continue this series so check back for more segments of "People Marketers Need to Know". Awesome idea for converting these segments into downloadable podcasts. I had thought about possibly making them video podcasts, but the idea of making them into simple audio versions could work as well." - Kenneth

"Alas, yes...that is the case. I am relocating to the San Francisco area to get better in touch with the Internet and work to be an expert in this crazy online world. But you're right...thank goodness for social media and the like. I think the network that I fostered here in the DC area has been a great help and hope to continue those relationships for many years." - Kenneth

Iron Man was a great movie. Loved the graphics, but the plot line was a slight bit disappointing. Entertainment made up for it though. Iron Man is still awesome - Kenneth

"Twitter "claims" that the number of followers and followees are not reported in "real-time" and they're purging their site of spammers. But what's even more confusing is WHY would you follow spammers. They follow you, not the other way around. There's no excuse for you to lose people YOU are following. The service has gone way downhill since its hey-day after SXSW." - Kenneth

"@andrewmccluskey - I completely agree. Having different messages for different media would confuse people, but that goes back to my original thought...do you need to think about the way the brand message comes across based on media when you're first thinking about creating the message or do you say "figure out the message first and we'll work around whatever media we're using"? I think perhaps the most plausible answer (in hindsight) would be to examine the brand's usage across all media first. But then again, 9 times outta 10, it'll be "on the fly" and companies will probably make the brand and adjust it to fit in the scope of whatever media they're using." - Kenneth

"Ernie...those are very good points. How often do you encounter your clients asking you to be on sites like FriendFeed, Twitter, Brightkite, or the greatest and newest social app since the creation of sliced bread? I'm guessing that most people are satisfied with simply being on where the mainstream audience will be. I'm eager though, to learn how to strategically market to an audience that has sought out new social avenues, like aggregators or perhaps finding a way to advertise without traditional online advertising routes. Do you have any insight?" - Kenneth

"Yes, I agree with you. I have not been to SXSW and would like to go. I think I would really hate myself for missing out on those panels and "trust" that someone would stream these sessions for everyone to see." - Kenneth

"Another thing that would have been good to have at Podcamp DC was that they had wi-fi available for everyone. It really sucked for people trying to share videos. I wanted to try and live stream the Jim Long/Andy Carvin talk on UStream but the Internet was spotty at best. I thought they said they would have available wi-fi for us?" - Kenneth

"Too bad I missed it. There were some good sessions but unfortunately I didn't want to miss the one I was in and reluctantly had to resign myself to not going to any of the other ones. I'd like to hear Justin's presentation though, but I agree with your point - which Justin stated that the people won't find your content. It needs to find the people. So with podcasts, SEO plays a prominent part in having them be found online?" - Kenneth

"John, you're absolutely right. I found that being spread out in different rooms on different floors proved a little complex in having people meet up to mash technology ideas. I had wanted to attend the session on social media in business marketing, but I decided to attend Shashib's in order to stake a spot for Jim's presentation. I liked Shashib's presentation, but I think a little bit more organization for the "unconference" may have been nice to have. How was Justin's talk on "Making Video Shareable"?" - Kenneth

"Hi Mostly Lisa...thanks for the comment. I fussed around with Sprout for a little bit before and I agree that it's cool. Definitely helps to easily create widgets - which seems to be the "buzz" word these days :) Sorry to say, but no I didn't create the MyBlogLog widget. It's created by a subsidiary of Yahoo, I think...you can add the iPhone-looking template to the widget there. It is cool..." - Kenneth

"Wow...I got Shel Israel to comment on my blog. I think that's pretty impressive and awesome that someone of that caliber paid attention to lil' ol' me. But I digress slightly. To respond to Shel's comment about "great web minds"...for someone who is kinda in the middle of the social media pack, not a newbie, but also not a subject matter expert, I think having the insights of someone that I consider "great web minds" is very beneficial. Everyone is overrated by someone and that's a valid opinion. I'm not going to argue that. But for someone to say they know Guy Kawasaki who has achieved so much during his time at Apple to forming several of these web entities or Jeremiah Owyang who takes social media with him to work to help broaden his audience base or even Shel Israel himself who writes great blogs and passes along his knowledge to other people...these are the type of people who I'd love to consider being my contacts so I can weasel out their experience and become a better expert of..." - Kenneth

"Hi Ann! Thank you for that wonderful reply. I do hope to explore more about WhyGoSolo.com and need to take advantage of the growing amount of things there is to do. I see that the community is continuing to grow as well. Kudos to you. As for MashMeetDC Remix, I haven't really thought about going, but it does intrigue me. When you say "open listing" for it, what do you mean by that?" - Kenneth
