I once had a loft with a cast iron spiral. I barely survived. - Oldengrey (Jay)
Lol...I had an awesome apartment in the heart of Soho in London - as awesome as it was, it was on the top floor, no lift and about for landing between ground floor and the apartment. The number of times my neighbours woke me up in the morning as they walked down the staircase finding me on the 3rd landing is embarassing. - Zee.
I've seen the laretto staircase in person, it's really incredible - anna sauce

Meh. In Pittsburgh, it's not the kids rockin' the 80s. It's the people of my generation who were in high school during the 80s who have never moved on. There's a woman on my bus in the morning that has crispy, permed and highlighted mall hair like you wouldn't believe. - Marci Maleski

Black and White Dollar Portraits (BW$P) | Justin Korn's Blog
"Thomas Hawk has been doing his $2 Portrait Project and when I first read about it, I thought it was a great idea. I’ve been trying to think of a way to alter his project in my own unique way. I know $2 is not a lot of money, but while walking down Haight Street the other day, I knew I would be asked for money quite a few times. If I stuck with the $2 project, I would have to stop at the ATM before lunch. So, I decided I would still be doing a good service while still keeping the the project alive if I only offered $1. It sounds cheap, I know, but this is not my intention. To take it one step further, every single one picture that is part of this project will be black and white. So, my project will be: Black and White Dollar Portraits (BW$P)." - Justin Korn

Chap on the UK Ubuntu podcast was saying that he had some problems with the drobo not starting up and because the disks are in a Drobo's own format there is nothing he can do to recover his data. I still think that you can't go wrong with plain old disk and a copy of rsync. - John Cooper

It most likely won't be coming to an unjailbroken iPhone. AT&T definitely doesn't want this eating their bandwidth. Same reason for netspace I'm sure. I don't even know if that tethering app is called that. I'm using it on my phone and love it. - Dennis Jackson

I thought the problem was the iPhone only handle a few video codec, none of which were very popular for streaming (but I'm not sure on that). - Andrew Leyden
I think the problem is AT&T's block on data transfer such as streaming over the cell network. So you could theoretically get your account terminated. (Hope that doesn't happen to me :P). It's in the ars technica article: http://bit.ly/1XzxCz - Brandon Titus

Lost in all this is the fact that a lot of performance is context-related. The same person who's done really well in one company can do poorly at the next. The same programmer paid $50k a year in India might be worth $250k in the US. The American attribution of performance to the individual is an analomy that many cultures in other parts of the world do not subscribe to (the Japanese are much more interested in setting up systems that perform, for instance, rather than being focused on hiring superstars). - Piaw Na

Ok, after spending time with Photoshop CS3's HDR functions which only sporadically work on some images and downloading a trial version of Photomatix's HDR software, I can officially say that HDR is a huge pain in the ass and definitely not worth my time or energy anymore.
it's not worth your time. definitely not worth it. just another tool that isn't really necessary - sam b-r
Adobe really needs to work on HDR. With a lot of tweaking you can get good results. The secret is in the conversion to 8 bit. It will never do the overly-stylized effect of Photomatix. - Andrew Smith
Even though I've seen some other people do some interesting things with HDR, all of the images that I played around with look like crap. Photomatix makes your images look like syrupy sweet and sickening cotton candy and Photoshop is just too frustrating to use when it's HDR processing only works on about 20% of my RAW files for no explainable reason. I'd expect more from software that I paid $700 for. - Thomas Hawk
Photomatix made me want to throw up. I did create a few images with Photoshop converting them back down to 8bit but CS3 would choke and crap out on about 80% of my RAW files that I tried to use so I couldn't really merge to HDR with the files that I really wanted to use. At least I can now say I've officially given HDR a run and it's not for me. Regular old processing in Adobe Camera RAW beats HDR hands down. - Thomas Hawk
Are you going to upload the HDR images somewhere? I'm actually experimenting with HDR, and would like to see some other HDR images. Edit: I know how to find HDR images on Flickr, but I am still interested. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
possible248, they look like puke. definitely not going to upload them anywhere. - Thomas Hawk
Try doing merge to HDR > move the slider farther right than you think, making the shadows too dark. Then convert to 8bit keeping the gamma and offset too dark still. Then bring it back with Image > adjustments > Exposure - Andrew Smith
Thomas, I know what you mean. I have only done 16 HDRs in the couple of years that the fad has been out. I probably have another 20 that I have the images for I just cant get myself over the effort. I use photmatix. If only my HDRs weren't so "interesting" on flickr or I'd never do it again. I like Lucis art better but the programmer has gone dark and the new Lucis tool is going to cost $500. http://flickr.com/photos... - Mark Interrante
I think a Photoshop familiar person will likely have better results with simply manually blending multiple exposures. The HDR blend tries to "automate" something that people have been doing manually in darkrooms for ages. Multiple exposures are great for getting nice ground and sky in the same image when there is a lot of dynamic range in between. - Jason Wehmhoener
I'm tired of HDR photos. They look a little too good. - Sean Davis
On a related topic, does anyone know of an iphone app that would use the camera to take HDR? - Mark Interrante
I tried HDR on a few photos - decided that I'd rather go back and reshoot in better light than do anymore HDRs if at all possible. :) - Patty Hankins
It is possible to make HDRs that do not have that HDR "look". I prefer to use HDR as a way of getting just a bit more dynamic range. See the first two on the link http://bit.ly/38IpH2 (made with Photomatix). Photomatix (actually HDR in general) requires quite a bit of tweaking so I am not too fond of the extra time needed to process things. - jho
the HDR feature in Photoshop really isn't worth a dime. Photomatix and a bit of understanding of why you're doing what you're doing with the tonal mapping or light recovery and you're in and out very quickly. - Frank Jonen from Alert Thingy
Thomas, Your images have to be tone mapped after they are merged, otherwise they WILL look like crap. Photoshop CS3 is not the greatest tool for HDR. Photomatix is a very good tool if you learn how to use it. Here is a link to an article by Uwe Steinmueller who is an expert at HDR on how to shoot and process images in Photomatix. http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc... - Jeff P. Henderson
"they look like puke. definitely not going to upload them anywhere." - HA! I played with HDR in photoshop also and was completely turned off. Haven't tried photomatix yet. - Justin Korn
Here are a couple HDR images made from a single RAW file shot on a Canon 5D. http://www.flickr.com/photos... http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Jeff P. Henderson
Trebor, I was kind of playing around and made them have that HDR look, because I thought it looked interesting. You can do HDR images that don't look like the typical HDR. Check out Uwe Steinmueller's article above. He does many HDR images that you would be hard pressed to tell that they were HDR. It does take a lot of practice to do HDR correctly. I've seen HDR images that span the spectrum from cartoonish to completely undetectable. - Jeff P. Henderson
A comment on the intent of HDR. The original intent of HDR photography, where several images of the same scene are taken at different exposure levels and then merged, is to produce a photographic image that has the apparent dynamic range of human sight. A single image taken with today's state of the art DSLR has the capability to capture somewhere in the vicinity of 10 to 14 stops of... more... - Jeff P. Henderson
(CONT) When several images are merged, they often appear quite dark or just plain don't look correct. This is because no display or output device has the dynamic range to properly display it. To correct this, programs like Photomatix do a tone mapping which basically moves everything in the image into the dynamic range capability of your monitor or printer. The end result is that you... more... - Jeff P. Henderson
This photo, while not the awesomest, would not be possible without HDR - handheld, no flash, 3 frames bracketed +1.33 0 -1.22 and 0 = f/22 1/30 iso800 http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Andrew Smith
Photoshop CS3 HDR frames side-by-side http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Andrew Smith
Agree Trebor. Edited the order of frames now. It's not the best photo but it's an example. - Andrew Smith
Bert Monroy over at Rev3 has a recent episode talking about exactly this: CS3 + Photomatix - http://revision3.com/pixelpe... - Holger Eilhard
Have to disagree with you there, yeah there's some awful HDR imagery on the net but used well you can produce some very interesting pictures. I like it though it is just another way to get creative with your photography - Kol Tregaskes

Now that FF supports identi.ca and Plurk, I may need to rethink my ping.fm strate(r)gy
I have my top men working on a stragedy (my favorite misspelling of the word) for me right now. - Akiva
Thanks to Ping.fm and all these AIR apps, I have no need for browsers! - Outsanity
I am pondering the same thing. Ping.fm is quite useful but the duplicates in FF would become a bother. Maybe a filter in FF that checks whether the messages are the same and groups them? Something like "shared from 2 more sources". - Andrés David Aparicio from twhirl
Some people more likely removed other sources like Pownce, Twitter, ect and just have FriendFeed show via Ping only. I'm still waiting on an Ping.fm AIR app. - Outsanity
Yeah, my current setup has removed all status notifications and use ping.fm to post a message to FF. But the pretty identi.ca and Plurk icons make me jealous inside. - Bwana ☠
@Outsanity I don't think that works as a long term solution. After a common update from ping.fm, each service may spawn different threads with different people and I'd like my service-specific updates show up in FF without encumbering it with duplicates. - Andrés David Aparicio from twhirl
Maybe FriendFeed is working on de-duplicating and all our problems will go away. Aleast I hope they are.. - Aaron Myers
I don't think this is an issue that FriendFeed should be messing with directly. I, like Bwana, am also jealous of the little icons for having the service native. There must be a method to get the best of both worlds... - Rah-PM 2012
I'm thinking about taking the Louis Gray advice and let the user worry about duplicates and just bring everything in - Bwana ☠
Bwana, I think it's the way to go for now. I don't have any problem hiding your Plurk, identica, etc. statuses (and believe me, I will hide them!) but I don't want to hide your blog posts and this separation by FriendFeed allows that. Still, while I have no problem hiding various services, and don't find it difficult, I believe the mainstream user will be absolutely overwhelmed by the approach. FriendFeed will have to figure something else out ultimately. - Robert Seidman
I know that SocialThing! handles duplications so I know it can be done but I think ultimately Louis might be right and I've said it many times myself: let the subscriber shape the noise. - Akiva
I don't mind double posts. - Outsanity
SocialThing seems like Lifestream.fm a little to me - Outsanity
@Outsanity Didn't SocialThing come first? - Aaron Myers
I think SocialThing! predates Lifestream. It broke wild at the same time FriendFeed did (i.e., Techcrunched). - Akiva
I'm not sure. I'm just now learning of SoTh. Looks interesting tho - Outsanity
My problem is that, I don't want anyone to have to hide either service due to duplicates. There may very well be different conversations going on on either service around my updates. Everything is not a duplicate. This is where I'm torn. - Rah-PM 2012
Rahsheen, they can do what I currently do with Twitter: hide them all unless they have likes or comments. I read tweets at Twitter (and dents at identi.ca) and then see any FriendFeed conversations here with very little overlap. - Akiva
Rahsheen, the question becomes what's more important: sharing to the various services or consolidating the ensuing conversation that occurs on FriendFeed? As FriendFeed is currently designed you don't get to say "both". Understanding that it's not currently ideal, I'd pick the one that's most important to *you*. - Robert Seidman
Ah! I didn't think of that. Thanks, Akiva. - Rah-PM 2012
If you can make FriendFeed better for one of us, you're making FriendFeed better for all of us. - Akiva
In the end, Akiva's strategy didn't work for me as a consumer of the data. What would fix it for me is separating "likes" from comments (show me twitter *only* if they have comments, not if they have either). The nature of the beast is that friends will like their friends tweets (often in bulk) and I see lottttttts of stuff I don't want to see so I had to hide them all. The highly commented tweets still show up in "best of", so I feel like I'm covered mostly. - Robert Seidman
That is also true, Robert. I ran into that yesterday...a lot. - Rah-PM 2012
Robert, that's a good point. The more granularity we have, the better the experience becomes. - Akiva
Long live ping.fm - adolfo foronda
I just added Plurk and identi.ca to FF and was thinking about the same issue. On one hand, I want to update the people who are not on FF and service exclusive. At the same time, you don't want to annoy people with duplicates. - Aram Zucker-Scharff from twhirl
I ended up removing my twitter feed from ff so that there wouldn't be repeats as well as my boring tweets showing up in my feed. I use ping.fm to post to ff, twitter, and identi.ca at the same time when I have something I want my ff subscribers to see as well as twitter followers. - Dennis Jackson
I think you have to be careful when it comes to defining noise. I am sometimes grateful that the same someones post appears more then once on different networks since it's alerted me to news I have found valuable. One of the values of Friendfeed is the comment portion. It causes posts to reappear several times. so if I miss something the first or second time I may see it the second or... more... - Paul from twhirl
You Bwana, are a VERY wise man - Mona Nomura
@Bwana See http://friendfeed.com/e... The problem with letting me decide how to handle dupes in FF is that you lose control over which network is more important to you because I'm going to hide all except one of the sites you cross post to and will probably miss non-cross posted updates. Do you have a preference or should I do a enny-meany-miny-mo? - Hao Chen
Hao, I generally let users decide which they want to see. I really don't have a preference per se. It can vary depending on what's going on. For now, you can just hide my status updates only if they have comments or likes. Since I'm using ping.fm for crossposts, you can hide everything except FriendFeed messages. - Bwana ☠
