Keep spreading the word, I've been using this method for a while now and it works like a charm. F paying 99 cents for your ringtones.

I know it's not really a free solution perse but another method is have Audio Hijack capture the audio from iTunes Music Store. The music preview (~30 seconds) should suffice as a ringtone.
