"In a Facebook blog post, the company announced that a limited, private beta of a new search interface is being rolling out to a small group of folks on the social network. The new interface will allow those fortunate enough to have access to it the ability to search for content from people, organizations, and other public figures as soon as they share it on Facebook"

"While 99 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds have profiles on social networks, only 22 percent use Twitter, according to a new survey from Pace University and the Participatory Media Network. This is consistent with what some observers have said about Twitter's recent push from early-adopter territory into the mainstream: that it's catching on with a slightly older demographic than the teenagers and college students who formed Facebook's initial core."

"Why compare user numbers between a browser and a social network? Because there's every reason to believe that the two technologies are converging in the near term future."

In other news, Dell will soon be challenging Linux ... Not quite. This is an apples-to-oranges comparison no matter how you slice it. Facebook will always need a 3rd party browser unless they make a Google move and code their own. The fact that FF is adding OpenID functionality is irrelevant because FF is still *software*, not a network. A better conclusion would be that FF-FB integration would be FB's greatest triumph/opportunity, but saying that one will "challenge" the other is nonsense.

LANjackal: FF is still *software*, not a network. As you say it STILL software, but if you read the article it says that in THE NEAR FUTURE that might change. And it is that change that is suspected to be able to challenge FB.
- Kasper Sorensen
IMO that's still pretty wild speculation. It is possible? Sure. Probable? Hardly.
- LANjackal
How can firefox challenge facebook? Unless there is a browser to browser B2B friendship connections so you can co-watch your friend's browsing perhaps?
- TrafficBug
You are probably reading a little bit too much into the article. These are all speculations, ideas and concepts being put forward. It's simply an idea, maybe it seems far out, but if it wasn't explored and we simply always stick with what we've got, then we would never see any innovation. It might be unthinkable, but as long as it's not explored, you can't say.
