Just finished a refreshing 50-comment DMversation with @lalunablanca here on FF. Thanks for adding this feature FF!

I hope I don't dream of FriendFeed tonight
Jennifer Van Grove
Just realized that the one thing I really wanted from FF was real replies in comment threads (ie. for notifications) :(
The "my discussions" page is a start (http://beta.friendfeed.com/filter...)... what exactly did you have in mind? - Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, you make an excellent pt, but I want better insight when people are responding to my comments in other FF users' threads - Jennifer Van Grove
"my discussions" does that, doesn't it? At least, that's what I use it for. It would be great if it had a counter on it, for the number of posts with additional comments, though. - Louis Simoneau
My Discussions will show all threads in which you've participated, yours and others. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
SocialMedian implemented something called Replize that's exactly what you want. It's been months and FF doesn't seem to have taken the hint :/ http://friendfeed.com/search... - Daniel J. Pritchett
Tina, Louis - yeah I get that, I want something a little more complex. Say for example I respond to something Scoble posted & he or other commenters respond back to me reply. I want to visually see that (maybe a diff color?) or opt to receive notifications of those replies. - Jennifer Van Grove
Daniel, yep something akin to SM's Replize would be fan-freakin-tastic :) - Jennifer Van Grove
So, like an independent "reply" button on each comment, so you would know when someone was replying specifically to you? - Louis Simoneau
Louis, yep...that or @+username recognition in comments - Jennifer Van Grove

Nah. I think it's just right :D - AJ Batac
surfing at all? - sofarsoShawn
Am I the only person who hates the term "surfing" in respect to web browsing? - Gabe
@Gabe, I don't particularly hate the term surfing, but I do think it's rather dated and Nintiesish. - Christian (Simply X)
It's true: I used IE to dl first three versions of Firefox, but ditched it due to bloatiness. Now I'm back to IE and Chrome. - Jemm
you can try to pry ie from my dead cold hands :( - chaz2b
streaming netflix movies 90% downloading chrome 10% - David Lynch
So, if were to somehow magically find a copy of Windows without IE, install it on a virgin computer, how do I get "the first" browser in there without a browser? I have to go to Babbage's and buy a Firefox 3.5" ? - Matthew DeVries
Matthew, USB stick containing the Firefox installer. - AJ Batac
I always carry portable apps (http://portableapps.com/apps) just in case. ;) - AJ Batac
AJ: What do you do when you configure a machine remotely? - Gabe
If you can access the machine remotely, you can open up a folder (share) so you can dump in your Firefox installer. - AJ Batac
I try and avoid using IE whenever possible If I go to someones house or to another computer, I bring my usb drive and use portable Opera or Firefox. I hate Internet Explorer. I refuse to use it. At least at my school they let you use IE or Firefox - Patrick from twhirl
@David Lynch You don't need IE to use Netlfix Watch Instantly. So stop using it! ;o) - Paul Reynolds
IE8 is a much improved version, although Firefox is still milesahead imo - Nicholas James
The one place where sadly I have to use IE, is with home grown enterprise apps that my company makes for getting at the databases, HR filings, etc. They mostly work Firefox, but when they don't hours of work can be wiped out :( - Matthew DeVries
If somehow IE disappeared from your Windows computer, there's always "ftp ftp.mozilla.org" from the command line :) - Victor Ganata
They forgot "testing code for the people too clueless to switch to something else." That's the only time I use it. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Mod up Jandy +5: Interesting ...boy, FF sure could use comment ranking :) - Glenn Batuyong
No no no to comment ranking. *shudders* If you want Digg, go got Digg. - Matthew DeVries
Bah! ftp.mozilla.org from the commandline! ;o - Daniel Bruce
ftp> open ftp.mozilla.org - AJ Batac
@Matthew but then it wouldn't be FriendFeed :) ...seriously, comment ranking would allow more compact commenting because instead of dedicating a line each for "+1 whoever" (and typing it) you could just click an arrow-up or something and a score would appear next to it. If ya want, mouse-over the score to see who upped it. Let's make the web easier to use. - Glenn Batuyong
I use it to test for clueless people and, sigh, Quickbooks ONLINE. Yep, I have to keep VMWare Fusion/XP/IE handy so I can use a web app. It's almost criminal. - Paul Reynolds
Have you seen Hacker News? I love their ranking implementation :) - AJ Batac
Glenn and thus killing the social website and making it a popularity website. It's just for finding out what your trusted followers think is interesting, not for building popularity through the coolness of your posts. - Matthew DeVries

They also forgot "my workplace refuses to upgrade or allow users to upgrade". - Rochelle
Fantastic! - Martha

=)) since 2005, valid for me :) - Ahmet Alp Balkan
Because you like the setup popping up every time you use it. - Stephan Miller from Friend Deck
I am force fed IE @ work for enterprise apps. We might as well be using command line database software, IE only apps make me sick. - Pete Delucchi
I don't even use IE to download Firefox, I use Firefox to download Firefox for other computers. Use a flash drive and use a portable version of Firefox. - Patrick from twhirl

Amber Weinberg: Freelance Designer / Developer - http://www.amberweinberg.com/
Amber Weinberg: Freelance Designer / Developer
I met @amberweinberg in passing at BarCamp Memphis. She boasts one of the most valuable skills in web development: "I specialize in taking your design PSDs and coding them into compliant HTML, CSS and PHP sites." Here's an Oct. 20 article touting PSD to XHTML skill (#5): http://is.gd/8YON - Daniel J. Pritchett from Bookmarklet
Very nice works! - Jesper Lind
Crap, that's a valuable skill? I've been doing it for years. I always thought it was sort of like cheating with web design. I guess not. *scurries off to update resume* Nice website btw. - Aram Zucker-Scharff
You didn't know? I wouldn't know where to begin with that. Probably rereading the CSS box model tutorials and paying more attention this time. - Daniel J. Pritchett
I always thought that anyone who wasn't building it from the ground up with code and CSS in Dreamweaver was sort of cheating the system and that converting PSDs to HTML and modifying them with PHP, XHTML, etc... was the lazy way to do it. It is very cool to find out that what I thought was my secret shame is actually a valuable skill though. This sorta made my day. :P - Aram Zucker-Scharff
I imagine this comes in most handy for contract site building. You've got a client with their own creative staff in-house that says "I don't know how to build a web page but I can certainly draw a good-looking one on my Mac". All they need is someone to make their designs a reality. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
At this point in my life, I deal with clients who want me to do both the design and the code, so I never thought of it that way. Good point. - Aram Zucker-Scharff
That's right Daniel, most of my freelance business is dealing with these type of clients and doing the same thing. I feel that specialising in a certain area of the web, similar to what @amberweinberg does, helps you to give these clients real value for their $$$. Niche markets, I suppose, and the web is full of them. - David McDonald

i wonder if i am alone when i say that i hate that obama is on youtube.
You are alone. I love it. It signifies change and the passing of generations - Francine Hardaway from IM
Obama was great on YouTube during the campaign. The new bit? Not even good enough for radio. - Michael Markman
Francine - the videos belong on change.org or the whitehouse site - not youtube - Allen Stern
I don't hate it but, the hubub over it being so amazingly forward is silly. President Bush's weekly address has been a podcast for awhile now. - Candace
It's not like he's lip-syncing and dancing around like an idiot ... he's using it like past Presidents used radio or TV addresses. But now they are archived, embed-able and something people can interact with. How's that bad? - Clay Newton
Nahh the video of him lip syncing and dancing is here; http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Candace
The videos are on the change.gov site. The bonus of them using YouTube is it is the only video site I can think of that is accessible to everyone. - Admiral Anika
The videos are also on Change.gov - Francine Hardaway
I think Allen's peeved that YouTube's getting an apparent content exclusive. But the video would end up on YT _anyway_, and get more views there _anyway_, so the point's kinda moot. And since he's not President yet, it has no business on the White House site, either, imo. Put your message where the audience is. Online, you'd be stupid to ignore or pass over YouTube, for better or worse. - abacab
Depends on why you hate it. I admit it makes me uncomfortable, for the same reason I didn't like that Eric Schmidt was on his team of economic advisers. I don't think we'd think it was cool if the chairman of Exxon-Mobil was on his board, and I see Google the same way -- a bigco that would love to have an in with the president-elect (and does). Youtube is part of Google. So it makes me queasy to see the guy I backed get into bed with a bigco. - Dave Winer
I'd like to see him on blip.tv -- helping out one of Google's competitors. Now *that* would be cooool! Right? Wouldn't you think that Obama really got it if he supported diversity and competition? - Dave Winer
You're probably not alone, but I'm not with you and don't know who is. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I don't know if it's true of a "transition team" - but *as President* every video he makes would be public domain by default, which means they'd wind up on YouTube anyway. And there's nothing to stop anyone from putting it on another site or hosting it themselves. This just streamlines it a bit. - Eric P
David, that's just being nitpicky. The Obama campaign was using YouTube throughout the entire campaign. This isn't some new idea that just popped into someone's head there. Two years of using the service, they probably just thought, "Well let's roll the admin. stuff over to there too." - Admiral Anika
Can't say you're alone, but... I think it's awesome. :) At least we'll have some semblance of a two-way dialogue. - l0ckergn0me
The deal is that Youtube has a system set already to distribute the videos. The Whitehouse and Govt would have to buid something similar. The Repubs state that we should use other private already made and proven systems. This is just one way. - Uncle CW™
The more you guys are willing to give the market to YouTube the more it makes me want the government to disrupt that. Monopolies are totally un-Internet-like. Suppose the government had decided the Internet should belong to AT&T. Could have happened that way. Wouldn't have worked out very well, I'm sure of that. Instead we got all kinds of new stuff because it wasn't owned by anyone. - Dave Winer
Dave, there are other services, but they can't compete with Youtube. Obama could use Hulu but the services might charge him for it and Hulu is not as easily to share. Also most of the US internet traffic does go through AT&T hence the NSA closets. - Uncle CW™
@Dave, but in reality is that's the largest and most widely distributed video network at the moment. It's like the NBC, CBS, etc. of the web for video. Probably has plenty to do with Eric Schmidt also - so see it as giving to Google, really. Everybody seems to love Google. I think Obama could have married the audience to his own platform, but isn't it your/my/our web peers that say we... more... - Patricia
I think we should all be grateful we now have a president who understands technology, who is willing to use the internet as the communications platform we all see it as, who is at least giving the perception that he is interested in two-way dialogue. When has this ever happened in our short history? While it may suck the he opted to use YouTube, did you honestly expect him to use Vimeo, Justin.tv or some other similar site? YT is *the* video sharing site. What are you suggesting Obama use in place of YT? - Scott Jarkoff
Patricia why do you think this move has anything to do with Schmidt? Keeping in mind, as I noted above, that the Obama campaign was using YouTube since last year. - Admiral Anika
I don't mind he's on YouTube....I just dislike what he has to say. - Curt Mercadante
That Obma is doing Video, I LOVE. That it's on the GooTube, not so much. - teh Dork Knight aka Kenny
@Anika, it can and may have zero sinister motive to it. It's been widely reported that the two are in cahoots, whatever. It may have been Schmidt who suggested it. Who knows. People need to stop seeing the web as a website, and start seeing it like broadcast TV or their phone. To the government, and I mean this, it's not about YouTube, Facebook, social media, power of the people or any of that noise. It's about reaching people with information like biz and govt has done with radio, Tv etc before it. - Patricia
when the country can't revive because the socialism life support that we are under is repressing it... you might be surprised to see how many people saw your post... but were afraid right now to say anything about it. When the global situation Balkanizes and the borders fall in good intentions... and mass holocaust hits everyone... just remember that post. ...and remember how you thought the important issue was youtube or not... or that the color of a person's skin was the reason you elected that jerk - Noah David Simon
Davidson, Chill. It's just another channel of communications. Deep breathely. - Phil Boiarski
I think it's the shit - sofarsoShawn
ps, @scott - i used to write the letters that made people think the congressman in my city was active and involved. it was never him, always me, but people were sure he was painstakingly typing those notes. so it's not "obama" but the adminstration. nothing wrong with it, but know it isn't all him but many adopting to the new platform. it's a good thing. - Patricia
It would surprise me if Obama presidential web-vids remain exclusive to YouTube. The ads were also on Brightcove. - Michael Markman
wow lot of comments - allow me to clarify a few things... 1. i haven't watched his message - my comment had nothing to do with what he said or will say 2. it has to do with what Winer said - it's about fair competition, discovery and diversity. Aren't there rules and laws in place to protect this sort of thing? 3. if you think this will be a two-way dialogue, you are sadly mistaken. - Allen Stern
It makes sense to continue reaching out to his supporters the same way he did before. - Aram Zucker-Scharff
Once he's in office, the videos will be public property. At this point, who knows what their status is. Not sure anyone has thought about it. - Dave Winer
I'm sure Mike Huddack and Blip.TV can do just fine without Dave Winer and the rest of the America hating Politburo. Besides Blip.TV isn't allowed to be seen in China because of censorship. My question is will you put federal money into a failed YouTube that can't make money off of advertising and create your own propoganda for Obama now or later? - Noah David Simon
Wait, I'm confused. YouTube has a near-monopoly? That'll come as news to Hulu, for one. This isn't yet anything like Microsoft, nor is Google as a whole. When they start doing not just "evil", but actually illegal stuff, this critique will make more sense. Otherwise, it just sounds like griping because Obama isn't catering to the 'net-verse. - Woodrow Jarvis Hill
I like that he's going where the people are. True, he should send this to more than just one network, and centralize on change.gov, but it is nice that he's trying to go where the people are. - Jesse Stay
Love it. Youtube or anywhere else - it's good to have a pres. that speaks to the people. - BEX
Smart president! - Igor Poltavskiy
woodrow - you can't compare hulu and youtube - they are completely different - it's really interesting to read the comments here, really, really interesting - Allen Stern
the question is not if youtube is a monopoly, but will we federalize BIG MEDIA when it fails? Advertising revenue is down! - Noah David Simon
I would really like it if he posted to multiple sites, thereby not favoring one company (especially one with poor video quality) - Justin Yost
Gee, I wonder where he should post, since he has been using the internet all along. Be thankful he is including us! - Rod Davis
It's also on Yahoo! Video http://video.yahoo.com/watch... and note that it's an original upload, not an embedded YouTube. - Mistletoe Glen
I'm all for it, YouTube is the ultimate video community, and they try the hardest to empower and compensate everyday video bloggers. Don't hate, emulate. - David A. Fenton
wait, what is change.gov ? Is the fascist in power already? isn't that illegal? he is not the government yet! - Noah David Simon
While I agree that an official Whitehouse player would be better it's a smart PR move to distribute via YouTube and other video community sites. That's where the eyeballs are. You can say it's exclusive but on the other hand it's inclusive. At least he has dumped old media for new. Good argument though, because it does look like an endorsement of with the YouTube player embedded on http://change.gov/newsroo... - Larry Kless
@Allen: YouTube and Hulu distribute video over the 'net Somehow, I don't see that as "completely different". The differentiation is that Hulu only does it on the "high-end", and doesn't accept user-contributions. Also, YouTube is just starting to do ads. Otherwise, they are in exactly the same industry, and directly compete for "eyeballs" in that space. - Woodrow Jarvis Hill
As for the overall topic: I'm frankly baffled about this whole kerfuffle. As noted, they have posted to 4 video sites, as well as provide a high-quality version for direct download. This all seems to fall to the thought that Obama is in bed with Google -- and that fails to note that the campaign was using YouTube well before Schmidt came on board. And the only evidence appear to be that they embed YouTube, when they can only embed one at a time. - Woodrow Jarvis Hill
Allen... you are not BIG MEDIA. you are the little media guy that Obama will SQUISH with government. - Noah David Simon
I agree with the ones that say it's not a good idea to have those videos JUST in YouTube. I think it's a good idea the video, not so good to give the opportunity to give video answers on a weekly basis. I think it's better to create themes and group videos and answers into themes that would be easier for people to follow and answer. But it's a mistake to give the videos just to YouTube, they should be in the Change.gov website and made available to companies per request. - Cibeles
I don't think anyone would say anything yet, but once he is officially president if he offers the videos JUST to YouTube, they may be legal challenges to that. It's public money being use in a discriminatory manner, it's as simple as that. In my country, Spain there would've been already a problem and outrage in the press, and in Ireland it would've been the same. You either offer that to the public broadcaster or to everyone, but not to JUST one private company. About Schmidt it was clear his sympathies - Cibeles

With BarCamp Memphis less than 3 weeks away, it seems time to answer the question, once and for all, “What is BarCamp?” Let’s begin by deciding what BarCamp, most definitely, is not. BarCamp is not every other conference you’ve ever been to. The ones with cold coffee and colder speakers discussing topics that have been decided, possibly months in advance, with little or no audience input. It is not something you go to planning to sit still, look straight ahead, and try not to cough… or snore. It is the un-conference. - Daniel J. Pritchett
