The one place where sadly I have to use IE, is with home grown enterprise apps that my company makes for getting at the databases, HR filings, etc. They mostly work Firefox, but when they don't hours of work can be wiped out :(

@Matthew but then it wouldn't be FriendFeed :) ...seriously, comment ranking would allow more compact commenting because instead of dedicating a line each for "+1 whoever" (and typing it) you could just click an arrow-up or something and a score would appear next to it. If ya want, mouse-over the score to see who upped it. Let's make the web easier to use.

I always thought that anyone who wasn't building it from the ground up with code and CSS in Dreamweaver was sort of cheating the system and that converting PSDs to HTML and modifying them with PHP, XHTML, etc... was the lazy way to do it. It is very cool to find out that what I thought was my secret shame is actually a valuable skill though. This sorta made my day. :P

I imagine this comes in most handy for contract site building. You've got a client with their own creative staff in-house that says "I don't know how to build a web page but I can certainly draw a good-looking one on my Mac". All they need is someone to make their designs a reality.

I think Allen's peeved that YouTube's getting an apparent content exclusive. But the video would end up on YT _anyway_, and get more views there _anyway_, so the point's kinda moot. And since he's not President yet, it has no business on the White House site, either, imo. Put your message where the audience is. Online, you'd be stupid to ignore or pass over YouTube, for better or worse.

Depends on why you hate it. I admit it makes me uncomfortable, for the same reason I didn't like that Eric Schmidt was on his team of economic advisers. I don't think we'd think it was cool if the chairman of Exxon-Mobil was on his board, and I see Google the same way -- a bigco that would love to have an in with the president-elect (and does). Youtube is part of Google. So it makes me queasy to see the guy I backed get into bed with a bigco.

I don't know if it's true of a "transition team" - but *as President* every video he makes would be public domain by default, which means they'd wind up on YouTube anyway. And there's nothing to stop anyone from putting it on another site or hosting it themselves. This just streamlines it a bit.

David, that's just being nitpicky. The Obama campaign was using YouTube throughout the entire campaign. This isn't some new idea that just popped into someone's head there. Two years of using the service, they probably just thought, "Well let's roll the admin. stuff over to there too."

The deal is that Youtube has a system set already to distribute the videos. The Whitehouse and Govt would have to buid something similar. The Repubs state that we should use other private already made and proven systems. This is just one way.

The more you guys are willing to give the market to YouTube the more it makes me want the government to disrupt that. Monopolies are totally un-Internet-like. Suppose the government had decided the Internet should belong to AT&T. Could have happened that way. Wouldn't have worked out very well, I'm sure of that. Instead we got all kinds of new stuff because it wasn't owned by anyone.

Dave, there are other services, but they can't compete with Youtube. Obama could use Hulu but the services might charge him for it and Hulu is not as easily to share. Also most of the US internet traffic does go through AT&T hence the NSA closets.

I think we should all be grateful we now have a president who understands technology, who is willing to use the internet as the communications platform we all see it as, who is at least giving the perception that he is interested in two-way dialogue. When has this ever happened in our short history? While it may suck the he opted to use YouTube, did you honestly expect him to use Vimeo, Justin.tv or some other similar site? YT is *the* video sharing site. What are you suggesting Obama use in place of YT?

@Anika, it can and may have zero sinister motive to it. It's been widely reported that the two are in cahoots, whatever. It may have been Schmidt who suggested it. Who knows. People need to stop seeing the web as a website, and start seeing it like broadcast TV or their phone. To the government, and I mean this, it's not about YouTube, Facebook, social media, power of the people or any of that noise. It's about reaching people with information like biz and govt has done with radio, Tv etc before it.

ps, @scott - i used to write the letters that made people think the congressman in my city was active and involved. it was never him, always me, but people were sure he was painstakingly typing those notes. so it's not "obama" but the adminstration. nothing wrong with it, but know it isn't all him but many adopting to the new platform. it's a good thing.

Wait, I'm confused. YouTube has a near-monopoly? That'll come as news to Hulu, for one. This isn't yet anything like Microsoft, nor is Google as a whole. While I agree that an official Whitehouse player would be better it's a smart PR move to distribute via YouTube and other video community sites. That's where the eyeballs are. You can say it's exclusive but on the other hand it's inclusive. At least he has dumped old media for new. @Allen: YouTube and Hulu distribute video over the 'net Somehow, I don't see that as "completely different". The differentiation is that Hulu only does it on the "high-end", and doesn't accept user-contributions. Also, YouTube is just starting to do ads. Otherwise, they are in exactly the same industry, and directly compete for "eyeballs" in that space.

As for the overall topic: I'm frankly baffled about this whole kerfuffle. As noted, they have posted to 4 video sites, as well as provide a high-quality version for direct download. This all seems to fall to the thought that Obama is in bed with Google -- and that fails to note that the campaign was using YouTube well before Schmidt came on board. And the only evidence appear to be that they embed YouTube, when they can only embed one at a time.

I agree with the ones that say it's not a good idea to have those videos JUST in YouTube. I think it's a good idea the video, not so good to give the opportunity to give video answers on a weekly basis. I think it's better to create themes and group videos and answers into themes that would be easier for people to follow and answer. But it's a mistake to give the videos just to YouTube, they should be in the Change.gov website and made available to companies per request.

I don't think anyone would say anything yet, but once he is officially president if he offers the videos JUST to YouTube, they may be legal challenges to that. It's public money being use in a discriminatory manner, it's as simple as that. In my country, Spain there would've been already a problem and outrage in the press, and in Ireland it would've been the same. You either offer that to the public broadcaster or to everyone, but not to JUST one private company. About Schmidt it was clear his sympathies

With BarCamp Memphis less than 3 weeks away, it seems time to answer the question, once and for all, “What is BarCamp?” Let’s begin by deciding what BarCamp, most definitely, is not. BarCamp is not every other conference you’ve ever been to. The ones with cold coffee and colder speakers discussing topics that have been decided, possibly months in advance, with little or no audience input. It is not something you go to planning to sit still, look straight ahead, and try not to cough… or snore. It is the un-conference.

No, he wasn't trying to goose Obama. The camera angle is playing making it kinda look that way. This was at the end where McCain was gonna go to his right to shake the moderator's hand and the moderator went to McCain's left so there was a little foot-dancing going on. So, McCain was like okay, left or right, left or right?

i wonder if a picture can have the same impact as a video...i.e. does this picture have the chance of being the equivalent of the dean scream? My guess is not because Howard Stern and Rush can't play a picture on repeat.
