And even more, his patent on his infamous dancing shoes. :-)
- Jesse Stay
Seems like a can of worms to me. Who is going to decide who they honor and who they don't? This is a step down a political path that a Google would be wise to avoid.
- Dawn
Google should be more political. It's just very fine.
- Charbax
Checked Facebook. Sure enough, over 500 Jernbergs, mostly in Sweden and the US. Searched for my name; sure enough, there's 3 Dennis Jernbergs, one in Sweden (I hear there's at least 2 there). I'm the only really active one there, and the only one with a profile photo.
- Dennis Jernberg
Wish they'd allow you to limit results to a particular region.
- Spidra Webster
Well for all we know they had a blazing row over the Google Voice and this was a convenient way out
- Mark
Actually not so much surprised. I think they are doing just to keep up appearances
- Antonio Correnti
And to think you were going to go to bed Robert. ;)
- travispuk
it was something that apple have to worry about a long time before, now it is there and it will be big, and it will grow, now what will happen with google health?!!(if I was at apple I will try to face twitter)(how mny are using iphone and will?!!
- abdellah
Apple is the most evil company in the world. Calcanis said so on Twit.
- Charbax
Apple isn't evil, Apple is just making money.
- abdellah
HTC hero is is making andriod look awsome, with the protentual of every moble maker using amdriod (not nessary they will) Apple must be craping their pants :D
- opener
@abdellah, some would say they go hand in hand! ;)
- travispuk
@opener, I truly hope so. Providing some serious competition to the iPhone would be great as we all know that there isn't really any out there at the moment... of course the fact that I love Google products like Apps etc so much provides my bias on that. ;)
- travispuk
Google makes money in good ways. Apple makes money in some of the most evil ways.
- Charbax
I would really like the US anti-trust bodies to have a long hard look at Apple. To me they have always come across as an arrogant company but had little impact on me. However now the "I know better than you what you want and you cannot use anything that I don't let you use" I becoming a real pain in the arse.
- Nick Bristow
@charbax, I just dislike dominant no more. Google is trying to be any where and every where at the same time, were is the time when they was just indexing pages?I love Google product, but sometime they are fuzzy.
- abdellah
@abdellah think they are fuzzy themslef until they have a good product to market.. best way a to run a creative company i think. allow engineers to create the reputations...
- opener
Apple currently makes most of its revenue from the iphone. A very fragile business plan if you ask me. I think Apple is getting desperate for back-up evil plans. An overpriced tablet maybe? Nah, it won't work.
- Charbax
I always figured FriendFeed would get something out like this first with some kind of auto-embeddable widget. Echo looks great though, and I can't wait to get in on http://punchingkitty.com
- Mike Flynn
I love the idea, it looks like a great resource
- Scott Klauminzer
I just wanted to say that this Echo uses alot of CPU cycles. I am using Google Chrome and every time the page updates I get lag. Maybe its just my system?
- Mark
it's very slow - and fails out when trying to login with Google Profile
- andy brudtkuhl
its a wonderful service, but, yes, seems a little slow. Clicking on the emoticon box caused it to have a minor stroke on my pc
- Mark
@Mark please email me details about your PC setup (browser etc etc) to chris@js-kit.com so we can track down the issue for you
- Chris Saad
Seems a great idea and really works well. Nice functionality! However, I only think it could be useful for news sites (e.g. techcrunch that are commment-insensitive. Realtime matters for them.
- Kris
It will probably get a bit quicker as time goes on
- Robert D'Alesio
speed was an issue for both disqus and intense debate at various points in their history.. it does seem a bit slow to load at first but looks like its cached after. Given this is the first site and its not completely launched it sounds like they might have some work to do on performance?
- Riaz Kanani
but after it is cached pulling in a long list of comments is speedy..
- Riaz Kanani
I get the feeling that this is pretty important...
- Marlin Forbes
This is hillarious! How about we force Obama to make some new copyright laws.
- Charbax
I'd pay $5 per month for unlimited music and movies. Let's pay that over taxes, and some type of Government agency can scan statistics on BitTorrent trackers and other ways to measure popularity to redistribute all the billions back to the artists directly.
- Charbax
Charbax: LOL, ok, you start with your 1 vote and start convincing people, see ya in Congress...
- Marlin Forbes
Forbes, I donẗ think I can be elected to your congress. I'm Danish and live in Copenhagen. But thanks anyways.
- Charbax
When many members of the population break the law regularly, the law gets a bad reputation. Democracy is supposed to fix that. So, what gives? How come the megacorps are allowed to get away with it, when most of the population hates them for it? Oh yes: they are rich, and can afford the lobbying.
- Tim Tyler
Charbax: I am South African, and was talking as if you were American. :)
- Marlin Forbes
Marlin, if we can make this type of culture tax system pass in Denmark or in South Africa, I'm sure all other countries will have to follow and do the same as well, when everyone sees that it is the right solution. That is why I am interested in seeing Obama do something about it in the USA, if the USA changes their rules, it will inspire all other countries as well.
- Charbax
I agree, although I think that $5/month is a little mean. Starving artists, you know. :)
- Marlin Forbes
Google's Engineering Director has promised that its forthcoming Chrome OS will see the end of malware. Google is promising what the latest issue of New Scientist magazine refers to as "a carefree antivirus nirvana" with its forthcoming Google Chrome OS.
- Leo Laporte
@Scobleizer: Thannks for the link. reading it now
- David Damore
people shouldn't worry about the culture changing -- amazon bought shopbop.com and it has not changed a bit -- only for the better.
- Patricia
This is part of the evolution of business. I know there will be a lot of worried Zappos employees, but they shouldn't, this will help them in a long run. Other companies, like DSW, I am sure were looking at the Zappos model and wondering how they can capitalize on it.
- Erik Boles
David Damore - $890 million in stock, not raw money. you usually see a lower # on stock as it has a strong growth potential.
- Erik Boles
Excited overall but the one line in Tony's letter is a bit concerning "For Zappos, our vision remains the same: delivering happiness to customers, employees, and vendors. We just want to get there faster." Faster does not equal better.
- Jose Castillo
zappos means nothing to me - I live in Europe. But what an amazing video by Bazos. Low margins need economies of scale.buyin Zappos makes sense to me
- DC Crowley
Jose: the thing is, they laid off people last fall. They also don't have Amazon's brand. Everyone I know uses Amazon. Not everyone I know uses Zappos. This makes both brands better.
- Robert Scoble
Favorite line so far, actually a partial line: "... unless they bake us cookies and deliver them in person."
- David Damore
As an Amazon stock holder, I'm thrilled! :) Been a good week for me, owning AAPL and AMZN
- iTad
from fftogo
Just knew we would see the S word in there somewhere. [The S word is... synergy].
- David Damore
David: I wonder how the cultures will clash, though. Zappos is very transparent and fun. Amazon, closed and not so much fun. I wonder which culture will win?
- Robert Scoble
@Scobleizer: Sounds like they will have separate cultures. Can both cultures coexist? Me thinks yes. 75% on the upside.
- David Damore
Did this all break after the closing bell today?
- David Damore
@Scobleizer -- Zappos is tightly focused on culture and customer service, which has done them very well, I think Jeff will be able to help them move to the major presence they need to be. I don't see a conflict, I think Amazon can teach them a thing or two about business, and maybe, if the timing is right and people are open, Tony can teach zappos a thing or two about culture and loving your job
- Erik Boles
Yahoo Finance has the first article in headlines as "Amazon buys retailer Zappos in $807 million deal at MarketWatch (Wed 4:32pm)"
- David Damore
I once ordered some brown shoes and they sent black from the same style. When I complained they sent me the brown pair and let me keep both and included a $10 discount
- Mark
Thanks @scobleizer Just caught wind of the acquisition and it sounds like a good match to me despite the culture differences. Culture will take a hit, it's inevitable but hopefully Amazon will bring some interesting elements to the table to balance things out. One of my favorite photography sites http://www.dpreview.com was purchased by Amazon and at least outwardly the site has only improved.
- Rick Bucich
@Robert Scoble ...Any word if this is going to be a Dell/Alienware style merger.. or an outright purchase?
- John Blanton
John: looks like an outright purchase, but who knows? I gotta go do more homework.
- Robert Scoble
Hope Amazon doesn't screw them up - All my female relatives just rave about Zappos.
- PXLated
@Robert Scoble I would hope they let Zappos keep their brand/branding but it's just like you said yeah too early to tell at this point.
- John Blanton
Robert: Agreed, but I hope the desire to grow too fast doesn't kill the service - then it just becomes Amazon Shoes - granted, it will make a ton more money but at what cost to the end user. Should be interesting to watch unfold.
- Jose Castillo
@Robert Scoble ...according to this.. http://blogs.zappos.com/ceolett... .. Amazon will be the only shareholder yet Zappos is retaining their independance... So it's just like the Dell/Alienware merger.
- John Blanton
@Alessandro - oh i get it now, sorry. i got the "session expired" message in the main twitter window that shows tweets, not in the gadget itslef.

this realtime search is boring. Can you tell them to hurry up :p
- Darren Stuart
Allen: yeah. Hopefully Arrington doesn't keep me up for long. :-)

You're gonna knock him down in a bit :-)
- Amiroo ™
What's the topic of your spot with Michael?
- Jim Connolly
Robert: So, my request to ask about online mobs was pretty accurate? Cool.
- Jim Connolly
Will still be a few more minutes. Sigh. Jim: he wanted to beat me up about the mob like behaviors of many here on FriendFeed.
- Robert Scoble
Could you ask him if he believes the mob is organized, or if it's 'organic'?
- Jim Connolly
online mobbing goes well beyond friendfeed... have you seen the issues with teens & myspace? the topic should NOT be about "how techies get offended that not everyone likes their content"...
- Jeremy Toeman
So, are there any real changes? What did gmail (or we) do to deserve this?

I reckon they did it because its best as it is for using with wave.. not that I have used wave. ;o) I wish :o)

If you check the "Labs" tab in Gmail settings, you'll notice the Back to Beta option: "Soothes the soul by putting the familiar beta sticker back on the Gmail logo."
- Amir Gharaat
That is pretty bad if you can't cope without the beta label!
- Mark O'Neill
Yay for GMail! I wonder how I lived without it, after using many inferior e-mail services over the years, before receiving an invitation from a friend in India, registering and forgetting about it for ages, before making it the only e-mail service I use.
- Tyson Key
Heh, is the "Back To Beta" option in Beta itself? ;)
- Tyson Key
I thought you wouldn't take it well.
- Robert Scoble
Chris! What rock have you been living under?? LOLZ!!
- Susan Beebe
from BuddyFeed
Susan: you have to understand that Chris Pirillo is a funny guy and just yanking our chain. He's just reacting to all the floods of people talking about MJ's death yesterday. Funny that you fell for it, though. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
We tried but the Internet was broken from everyone wanting to tell their friends
- Jim Turner
I can't believe you just found out Chris. chuckle.

My new page tab has no history and doesn't seem to be picking up anything from the sites I'm visiting. I.e the most visited are just empty boxes.
- Warren Butler
But the new "--new-new-tab-page" works fine. I think I'l stick with that.
- Warren Butler
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I just saw the video. I'm not sharing it here, but I'll remember it for the rest of my life. I really have no words.

Thanks Robert, sometimes we forget what means to be FREE!
- Simone Lovati
from BuddyFeed
Simone: being free is not the same as being heard. The Iranians aren't fighting for freedom. They are fighting to have their voices listened to. The guy they are supporting isn't all that great either, if you look into his past and, anyway, above them is a religiously-run government. A fight for a free Iran will play out another day. This fight is simply to be heard. That's what that girl died for this morning.
- Robert Scoble
No Robert! This is the key point! They are not free to speak, they are not free to say NO and for this reason they are not be heard!
- Simone Lovati
from BuddyFeed
Simone: that makes sense, I agree, that if they were heard they would be free. I'd rather focus on what they want, rather than pushing American values, though. Freedom is gained step by step. Heck, even here in the United States we aren't completely free and aren't completely being listened to. Just try to get a gay marriage, for instance.
- Robert Scoble
I agree sometimes people just forget there is always someone worse off than you... Life is crazy..
- Chris Henderson
Hi Robert why aren't you in Green overlay for your icon? (or in your hulk icon). I think it is simple to show the world we are green in support of free Iran election. but maybe I miss sthg you know as you are more up to date on the situation than many of us.
- Harscoat
Harscoat: because being green isn't going to help anything. I'd rather spend the time building better searches and trying to find more information.
- Robert Scoble
We should all # her name but what was it
- Michael Mooney
Thanks Robert. I agree with what you say. For me being green just show the people in Iran in a very simple visual manner that we are in thoughts with them. This is only a first and not very concrete step I agree... and we should do more in sincere and respectful memory of this women of Iran... This image of the abyssal waste of a life, her life is devastating.
- Harscoat
LOL Rob, she's green on twitter. Hey CNN person calling in from Iran just said he uses FF, fb and twitter.
- Myrna
sorry Rob not on ff but I am green on twitter...
- Harscoat
Harscoat, same with me. Just changed to green avatar on twitter. Don't know why I didn't on FF.
- Myrna
Robert: I don't necessarily agree. It helps people ask "why are you green?" And people who weren't paying attention (because it wasn't in the news spotlights) are because they noticed that /everyone/ was green. I am green on Twitter/FF/FB.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Totally agreed Robert, locally i hear continuous arguments whether the opposition in Iran is any different regarding Nukes or Politics. My only reply was that it's not the issue now, Iranians simply yearn liberty and freedom of speech that we were born with. The opposition has progressive views about freedom and the people deserve our support. With all that said, i personally fear the...

Every tweet we make (for good or ill) is possible because of the sacrifices of those who came before us (great or small). We did not earn these freedoms. They are a gift given to us without merit. In many ways, those who are on the streets of Tehran today have earned the very freedoms that we casually discount. I am grateful that someone like myself has been given the many gifts necessary to speak freely about the issues I care about - whether noble or ignoble.

It was beautiful to see volunteers around the world setting up proxies for Iran as well. There were blogs going up in all languages with detailed instructions on proxies in many countries. Geeks unite! It was an ever changing and constant sea. Luke put it best with "whack a mole."
