Crazy isn't the word I'd use. Disrespectful, careless, self-entitled, irresponsible... Yep, somehow I've become a cranky old bastard. GET AWF MUH LAWN. - Akiva Moskovitz
Back in the 70's and 80's we had to settle for the odd apartment complex or motel and it was always with the sneakers tied-on tightly since we'd be chased out just as quickly as we entered. I've recorded some more thoughts on the subject here: http://snipurl.com/swimkid - Christopher Harley
I agree with @Leo - this is a made up story. And why are they calling it a "Facebook" craze, when it's Google Maps that makes it possible? - Rex Hammock
Why is it that only the British flip out over this stuff as full-fledged phenomenon that need to be stopped, probably with more cameras and monitoring of Facebook. - Andrew Feinberg
yeah, it seems like every other story is fake these days or some kind of viral marking ploy - Scott Beale
never needed facebook or google maps to do this. In my home town we would gather at a Mcdonalds to review a very good aerial photo that hung on a wall for empty swimming pools in 1975 for skateboarding. The media has nothing better to report on? - Jerry Schuman
@Rex because Google Maps doesn't have a messaging component? - Adam Turetzky
Is this a hoax like using Bluetooth to hook up with people on the tube: "toothing"? - Cote'
And what a great use of technology. I love how people become alarmed when someone utilizes something new for a purpose it's inventor didn't think of and it then upsets people. Sorta like searching Google for phonebooks inadvertently shared online ("phonebook" filetype:xls) or looking for Mac computers with Personal File Sharing turned on by searching the first sentence of the default page that's displayed. - Adam Turetzky
People should learn to lock their gates. Maybe set up a fake security camera (convenience stores do this all the time, and it works). Maybe get a dog, or a motion-detector linked to an extra-loud recording of a dog.
That aside, I agree there rotten punks are quite disrespectful. - Ivan via fftogo
This sort of thing won't be a problem if not for the fact that if there is a "dipping" party and a drunken idiot drowns, the owner, who didn't want them there in the first place, would be sued. Life would be more fun without the lawyers. - Robert Hafer
Disrespectful indeed. Wait until the owner has guard dogs. - Justin Rains
When I lived in A2, MI I drank so much Bell's. One of the best and most unheralded micro breweries in the United States. OMG thanks for the memories! - James
Matt, I'm not at the brewery, but I would love to visit some time. I always pickup Bell's when I see it since I don't come across it on the west coast. - Scott Beale
Oh yeah! I'm back in Michigan now, I can drink myself silly on Bell's now - l.m.orchard via twhirl
absolutely one of the best breweries in the US. That reminds me, I'm driving through Michigan very soon and may need to make a slight detour! :) - Mike Marusin
We WERE upset in Chicago. Hearing the name Bell's is like hearing the name of a girl who dumped you. I miss her so much... - Jason Phillips
When I heard the name Kalamazoo I assumed you were in Australia. Newcastle Brown is a good ale-- I'd recommend it. - john conroy
I've loved every Bell's beer I've had (except for the Cherry Stout). Oberon, Celebrator Doppelbock, Two Hearted, Third Coast Old Ale, all good. I've almost always got bottles of something of theirs in the the fridge - Andy Tinkham via twhirl
Freshbooks is great. It even has a time-tracking widget that logs and uploads your time. - Dan Kaplan
I used it for a while but stopped. it just didn't have a feature I needed. But, I really lke the service and it works quite well. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
I was scared off by discussions in their forum about an inability to have prepaid billings (retainers). I haven't gone back in a while but I also was not sure if the look of the invoice could be modified. The way it used the web for quotes was awesome -- I may still go back to it. - Wayne Schulz
I used it for freelance work and it was great. Support is Good, too. - Trevor F. Smith via twhirl
Freshbooks is great. I really like the format of the invoices and the ability to send invoices to more than one person at a company (via email or snail mail). Highly recommended. - Laurence Toney
ppl seem to be big fans and I know a devel there. The other service I commonly hear mentioned is Harvest -- @missrogue use? - Lloyd Budd
Scott, I'm a user of your squidhosting, and I've enjoyed my time with it. Great service. 0 problems evar (truly rare!). - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
I have a client using Rackspace as well. They are very responsive at customer service and offering other services. But, they are also the company that has hosed the same client's server twice now after supposedly simple operations like adding a drive to a RAID 5 array, and these are machines that Rackspace builds out themselves. - Steven Van Tilburg via twhirl
Andru, yeah my Rackspace post was in response to something specific. I can't really go into specifics, but let's just say it was way beyond "fanatical". It's things like that that have keep me there for almost a decade. - Scott Beale
Rackspace is our main managed hosting provider. They bent over backwards every single time I needed something, and any time I said "Jump" they always asked, "How high?" The only problem I've had with them, and it's not them anymore, is their managed mail: when it was part of Rackspace, it was amazing, but they recently spun that off into a new company, Mailtrust, and I've had nothing but problems. But Rackspace proper is just... lightyears beyond anyone else. - Mark Trapp
I'll also note here that LaughinSquid is a host that I have no trouble recommending to friends. Yes, Dreamhost can have "issues". - Tris Hussey via NoiseRiver
I have been with Dreamhost for some time, and I am satisfied. - Jeremy Brooks
I used to have an account at Laughing Squid (hosted at Rackspace) and it was the best hosting experience I ever had. - K Welch
@J. Phil if you picked dreamhost then I really don't think Rackspace was ever an option for you. You might check out pair.com for great shared hosting though. - Erik S
So they looked at tumblr, said, "Perfect! But let's get rid of signing up!" and voila, posterous? - J. Phil
How does it determine your vanity domain? By the sending e-mail address? That'd never work for me as I never give my actual e-mail address to any website. It's part of my zero spam measure (and, yes, I get absolutely no spam and have for many, many years). - Akiva Moskovitz
great, i got my own name there - another extraneous social appendage to look after... - Chris Heuer
@Akiva - You can set up a gmail account and register. You are assigned a temporary URL and can create your own 'vanity domain' after registering. - Rex Hammock
Thanks for the suggestion, Rex. This fits in with what I normally do: create an alias account on my mail server and use that. And now, for no real clear reason, I have http://akiva.posterous.com. - Akiva Moskovitz
It's pretty nice. I still like Tumblr more though. - MG Siegler
Posting from the site doesn't offer the opportunity to include photos that I can see. I'm with MG. Using the bookmarklette with Tumblr is still easier. I can link to a site while there instead of having to open my email client. - Jack Carlson
Gary Tan seems like a nice guy. That's a plus. - K Welch
Neat, but considering how I just got hit by a spammer spoofing my Gmail to blast a few dozen people, I'm leery of the no-setup model. Going through the signup is easy but defeats the purpose - what major blog service doesn't have post by e-mail now? - Garrett Guillotte
No future, for this app, it includes Comic Sans in text style options; Comic Sans is evil. - marcantonio severgnini
Hey Scott, thanks for the tip on Posterous. So bloody easy. - Marc Johns
Lucky you. My friends don't see the point in FriendFeed. - possible248 via NoiseRiver
I can cheerfully say I'm a non-techie but as a journalist I see the value of this and Twitter. Need to hone some better tech skills though. - Trace Sharp
Thats the beauty of FriendFeed, you can add them as imaginary friends even if they dont join willingly. :) - Mike Martin via Alert Thingy
i'd be happy if they'd just stop forwarding me dozens of jokes, especially the ones that another friend/family member has already sent me. - Scott Cropper
Scott tell them to setup a blog on wordpress.com and post there jokes there and then say that you will subscribe to the feed instead. - Scott Beale
I wish they would do that but I'm mainly talking about parents, aunts and uncles. A few friends are in that group as well. a lot of my tech friends are too busy with work for all this kind of stuff. lucky for me there are all of you i've met on friendfeed. - Scott Cropper
Nice list, I added a couple of people, surprised that Mitchell Tsai isn't mentioned as he is really active here! - Joe Dawson
LOL. The worthlessness of that list is illustrated by the fact that cdibona (who barely uses FF, no offense Chris) is listed there. Can we get over trying to measure who the best social addict is? - Erica Baker
No need to measure, wouldn't that just always be Scoble? - Scott Beale
It's just fun with Google, Erica and all. Mark didn't pick the list. For whatever reason, the Google indexing engine selected these IDs in that order. - Louis Gray
Joe: I was the #52 person on "google.com/search?as_q=friendfeed&num=100&as_sitesearch=friendfeed.com" http://google.com/search?as_q=... However, Google customizes it's search for everyone, so who knows if the author used a clean-slate machine to do the analysis? - Mitchell Tsai
I just looked at a few of those. I find them kind of interesting, although a few of them don't post too often - Chacha via twhirl
I'm always open to testing new PM hosted services. Currently very happy with clockingit.com which is a free hosted service or you can run your own. Can you tell us what compelling features made you choose unfuddle? - Mark Krynsky
Cool... I am a Project Manager and would *love* to get your feedback on this app. - Susan Beebe
I haven't project managed a software project in years. Any suggestions for current favorite apps? Or weblinks to pros/cons of different systems? - Mitchell Tsai
Mark I listed the features in my original post, but it's not just about features, there are many other factors that influenced our decision to use it, too many to list here. That's what demos are for and Unfuddle as a free one, so check it out. - Scott Beale
See you made your decision but we use (and like) TeamworkPM.net. For nonprofits, Huddle offers a nice premium program for free. - petermello
I use http://Atlassian.com 's JIRA and Confluence (integrated apps for issues, bugs, SVN repo, Wiki, etc.). Also used eProject (now owned by http://Daptiv.com). I was looking at using Trac too - Susan Beebe
did you concider assembla? It seems even more feature rich. - Lloyd Budd
We're using http://Atlassian.com JIRA (issue / bug tracking with priority) and Confluence wiki - both are well integrated products that are HIGHLY customizable (maybe too much soo). - Susan Beebe
Is there a web tie-in for OpenProj that someone was working on? - Steve Lynch via Alert Thingy
@thomas - I said the same thing above :) - MG Siegler
drupal could do it but would involve some work. the advantage would mainly be tweaking it to your specific needs. also check out tasks pro http://www.taskspro.com - Scott Cropper via NoiseRiver
Agree with everyone else who recommends basecamp. The API is pretty good. BCtoolkits.com is a service (still in alpha) for advanced reporting. Disclaimer. I work at the agency that built it. :) - Gez
ok, we have a winner, we are going with Unfuddle, it does everything we want it to and more, plus it includes SVN repositories: http://unfuddle.com (big thanks to Jason Wehmhoener for the suggestion) - Scott Beale
Phew, I was worried I was going to have to click on all those links to find out what I'm missing ;-) Great thread though, saved for future reference. - Jason Wehmhoener
Jason, we've been on the search for 4 years now & Unfuddle is what we've been looking for. We're even going to move our internal wiki over to it. - Scott Beale
I've been a Project Manager for several dotcoms for over 10 years. I've used a server based deployment of MS Project, I've used Basecamp, and several other systems. I had the same needs Scott posted above and after doing research landed on a wonderful system called http://clockingit.com. It can be run as a free hosted service or you can download it and run it yourself. I HIGHLY recommend evaluating it if you are looking for a PM tool. - Mark Krynsky
I agreee Eddie, especially if the integration is revolutionized - Scott Beale
Thanks Scott. By the way, the plugin refreshes every hour or if someone posts a FrienfFeed comment from your site. I was trying to be a good API consumer by not killing their server, but now that some more heavily commented sites are using the plugin I'm thinking of making it 1/2 an hour - Glenn Slaven
Glenn, thanks for solving that mystery, at first I though it was my WP Super Cache plugin - Scott Beale
Well it's something not every president get's. So in it's very own way iot's...unique... - Dennis Bjørn Petersen via twhirl
I think these sicko perverts should be stopped! Had NOBODY considered the psychological ramifications of this senseless act of cruelty??? Come on! Think of the poor workers! THEY'RE the ones who have to work at the GEORGE BUSH every day. - Roy Blumenthal via twhirl
I know this is being done in jest, but doing this to the position of the President of the United States doesn't seem right. Maybe I'm just too old fashioned. - Bryan Clark
@Bryan I hear what you're saying but do think that this particular president has done more to sully the office than anyone before him. - Carla Thompson
@Bryan doesn't seem right to me either. Just very juvenile and vindictive. I think there are more mature ways to make a statement - Shey
I hate this president from the bottom of my heart. but I agree with Bryan as well. The chuckle we get locally won't be worth the scorn we get nationally. - Mauricio
Should we be expected to respect a president who doesn't respect us? Of course, by that logic, we'd be naming all our sinkholes after Nixon. - Carla Thompson
You don't have to respect anyone who hasn't earned it -- but disrespecting someone else is never justifiable - Shey
whatever said and done, freedom of speech does not mean freedom to disrespect a person.. even if he is a lousy president. True happiness can't be gained at the expense of others. - Peter Dawson
actually I may have to put this on hold, there are some strange formatting issues that I need to sort out first - Scott Beale
The new FriendFeed comments widget from Pat Hawks for Blogger is outstanding as well. You can get it here: http://www.pathawks.com/2008/0.... It is live on my site right now. - Louis Gray
Ok, unfortunately I don't think that this plugin is ready for prime time, so I'm removing it for now. Oh well, it was worth a try. - Scott Beale
Same as Todd, hope it works out. Cross-fingers ;) - AJ Batac
So what went wrong? Did it not work or do you just not like how it works? - Glenn Slaven
it was working out fine for some blogs i've seen. :( what was wrong scott? - AJ Batac
when there is a comment, it adds expands the box creating a giant empty space - Scott Beale
ok, that's odd. I don't suppose you got a screenshot of that happening, I might be able to see what's doing it. - Glenn Slaven
I've removed the plugin, but I might try again later when I have more time. Everything else worked really well except for that. - Scott Beale
Aww, Bummer! I was looking forward to seeing it integrated on your site. I believe Pat Hawks' widget looks identical except it doesn't allow people to comment in FF directly from the blog (one of the features of the original). I have that functionality turned off on my blog. An example from my site: http://www.scribkin.com/2008/0... (scroll down to below the article) - J. Phil
Glenn, I just noticed that you are the author of the plugin. I'll add it back and see if you can tell what is wrong. - Scott Beale
Ok, I've reintalled the plugin using the default settings. This post is a good example of what the problem I'm having (large blank space before Likes/Comments: http://laughingsquid.com/where... - Scott Beale
J. Phil, yeah, I would like to make it work as well. Nice FF post BTW. - Scott Beale
:) Sorry Scott, yeah I should have mentioned that. Thanks having a look now - Glenn Slaven
when I 'show' the the FrndFd on ur blog, it gives me 7 pages of blankness, till I get to the comment. (my mouse wheel is set to roll 1 screen at a time) - clarke
Thanks Scott! That one, as you might imagine, was fairly popular with the friendfeed crowd. - J. Phil
Scott and Glenn - it looks at first blush like a div issue? Because the bottom of the blank area lines up with the last widget in the left sidebar.. just a guess. - J. Phil
Yeah, it's a css conflict, the default stylesheet clears a few items, but something on that page is pushing it down. Setting the clears to only clear left seems to have fixed it when I was testing here (yay for the FF Web Developer plugin!) I've sent a fix to Scott, hopefully that works - Glenn Slaven
Thanks guys, my theme is ancient and needs a refresh badly. - Scott Beale
Thanks Glenn, I've swapped out the CSS, now the giant space is below the content, but that's a start. - Scott Beale
It also looks pretty good sitting on top of Disqus, although with some sort of upcoming integration you may not need to mess with it. - David Knight
Actually I just added Disqus, I had been considering it a while and I think it's time for a change. I like that comments and be threaded and ranked. That should help with the conversation flow and the anonymous trolls. - Scott Beale
I'm sticking to Disqus, but am happy with the FriendFeed widget over the former Twitter Tools rev. - Sol Young
Glenn rocks, he worked through the CSS issues my blog and the plugin and now it works! You can see it in action here with a comment by Nick http://laughingsquid.com/video... - Scott Beale
I can't get that shit working on blogger. so much new tech for blogs that is hard for the average joe to install. Seesmic on blogger for instance. - Noah David Simon
Scott -- FriendFeed Comments Widget *and* Disqus.. very nice! Noah - If you use Disqus as your comment system (which should work with Blogger) it's as easy as clicking a check-box to get seesmic video comment support. - J. Phil
Ok, I'm holding off on Disqus for now, but I'll be keeping my eye on it, looks like a great system. - Scott Beale
Could someone post the link to Glenn's plugin? I would love a friendfeed plugin - Colby Olson
Inquisitr with friendfeed comments make a good effort I think, awesome plugin. - Chris Qie via twhirl
Colby this FF post is a link to Glenn's plugin. - Scott Beale
J Phil - I'm on blogger too and trying to get Disqus for comments working and would like to get Seesmic comment support, Do you know what check box I need to select or code to add to get that working? - Larry Kless
Totally didnt notice where the link went, sorry scott. - Colby Olson
Man, Im having errors with _my_ friendfeed plugin! - Colby Olson
Igor, we've been working out some problems with the plugin. It works now and both of your comments are showing up now. - Scott Beale
Thanks Scott, it looks really nice. Love seeing my pic on your blog. I wish all world problems were so easy to solve as an FF plugin. - Igor The Troll
Looks pretty cool on your blog, how does it fit with the themes? - Amit Morson
It's not updating very frequently though... - Amit Morson
Where could I find this plugin for wordpress Scott? - Colby Olson
I remember seeing this on TV and thinking it was Awesome. I also seem to remember there being some alternative, shorter, versions... but I can't remember what the difference was =P - Daniel Bruce
Amit the reason I doesn't update immediately is because I'm running WP Cache which is necessary in order for our blog to perform well with the kind of traffic we get. New comments will show up when I manually clear the cache or it expires on its own. - Scott Beale
Ok, maybe it isn't a cache issue. I just cleared it an these recent comments are not showing up yet. Maybe it is related to the FriendFeed API. Glenn Slaven might ahve some insight on this. - Scott Beale
yeah you're right, there should be a way to say you are interested in a post, but like is not always the right response and this is strong case for unlike - Scott Beale
Yeah.. Tragic. In general it's sad that bookstores get such little business in the Bay Area, compared to Seattle, Portland, Austin etc... - Sean Savage
now if only we could get it on Southwest! - Thomas Hawk
How much? Given the $15 bag charge most airlines are falling over themselves to implement, and the $2 drink charges from United, I'm guessing this'll be the most expensive telecommunications service ever offered (and I used to pay for Compuserve). - Stephen Mack
according to the article "The Gogo service will cost a flat fee of $12.95 for flights of three hours or longer, and $9.95 for shorter trips." - Scott Beale
