My <3 is="" made="" not="" of="" p="" s.="" up=""> If you were to take my heart out of my chest and hold it to your ear, you would not hear the sound of coins jingling around the sides. Nor would you hear the crumpled sound of paper dollar bills brushing up against the edges. No. If you held my heart up to your ear, you would hear the sound of my Love, my Joy, my Pain, my Heartache, my Heartbreak, my Success, my Failure, my Triumphs, my Laughter, my Tears, my Hurt, my Losses, my Past, my Future, my Words, my Hopes, my Dreams... My heart is missing pieces of itself that I've lost along the way. Some i've given freely. Some i've wanted back. But it's my heart, my journey and I wouldn't change a thing. Every story I write is a piece of myself that I choose to share with anyone who chooses to read it. I write FROM the heart, WITH my heart. It's just who I am. And dear readers, I can promise you this: I will never write for the money. I wouldn't even know where to start. <3 I love and... - Laura

Suit of the Week: Limited - http://corporette.com/2013...
For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get -- instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. This cool reverse-lapel jacket caught my eye over at The Limited, as well as the interesting notched-hem skirt. First, the good: I think the reversed lapel looks really cool and modern, but still "reads" conservative suit. Plus, there are a lot of bottoms that seem to match the jacket -- flare pants (pictured above), bootcut pants, and then the skirt. I have mixed feelings about the skirt -- on the pro side, slits are supposed to be a hot trend right now. I forget where I saw that reported, but my reaction was to roll my eyes and think of all the times I've unwittingly flashed far too much leg (or, joy, support garments) with a slit in my skirt -- so it isn't surprising that I'm hesitant... - Laura

Today in Totally Shocking Vatican Facts - http://www.shakesville.com/2013...
[Content note: rape, dismissal of survivors, instutional abuse.] Here are some totally shocking facts that emerged today about the Vatican! One: It's secretive! The College of Cardinals that will elect the next pope cut off formal communications with the news media on Wednesday after their private deliberations emerged in the Italian press, raising the specter of a leaking scandal that cast a pall over the last year in office of Pope Benedict XVI. Two: It's shitty at being secretive! “Concern was expressed in the General Congregation about leaks of confidential proceedings reported in Italian newspapers,” said Sister Mary Ann Walsh, director of media relations for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, who has organized news conferences with American cardinals in recent days. “As a precaution, the cardinals have agreed not to do interviews.” Three: It's shitty at doing media! ...the Vatican has sought to satiate the army of accredited journalists flowing into Rome with brief... - Laura

What I Learned in First Grade - http://www.shakesville.com/2013...
I'm sure I learned a lot of stuff in first grade—how to spell two-syllable words and basic math symbols and chisanbop—but I don't remember learning any of it. I have only two clear memories of the first grade, of which the report card thread put me in mind. The first is drinking milk when Mrs. Ballas left the classroom during snacktime. I don't remember why she left—probably to run off some dittoes (it was like the internet, but with a hand-crank) or because she had to fart and didn't want to do it in front of a classroom of six-year-olds. I just remember that we were told to eat our snacks and drink our tiny cartons of milk and be quiet and don't leave our seats for any reason. Maybe it was because Mrs. Ballas was out of the classroom, but I decided to try an experiment with my milk. There were two ways to drink milk: Through the provided straw, or straight from the inevitably mangled crease at the paper carton's opening. For unknown reasons (besides being a six-year-old), I wondered... - Laura

AR Senate Overrides Governor’s Veto of Abortion Bill - http://feminist.org/blog...
The Arkansas Senate voted to override Governor Mike Beebe’s (D) veto of the Arkansas Human Heartbeat Protection Act yesterday. The override passed the Senate in a twenty to fourteen vote. All fourteen Arkansas Democratic Senators voted against the override. In a letter issued after Beebe’s veto on Monday, Beebe said the bill twenty to fourteen vote“blatantly contradicts” the Constitution. Senate Bill 134, or the Arkansas Human Heartbeat Protection Act, includes exemptions for rape, incest, life of the mother and severe fetal abnormalities. If the Arkansas House also overrides the veto, it will be the most restrictive abortion ban in the country. A simple majority is needed in both the state Senate and state House to override the governor’s veto. Last week, the Arkansas Senate voted to override Governor Beebe’s veto of a bill that bans abortion at twenty weeks. The Senate voted 19 to 14 in favor of overriding the veto following a House vote approving the veto override by 53 to 28 last... - Laura

Lieutenant General Overturns Service Member’s Rape Conviction - http://feminist.org/blog...
On Monday, Lieutenant General Craig Franklin overturned the rape conviction of an air force service member who was found guilty by a jury. Franklin claims there was not sufficient evidence that the woman had been raped. The Air Force fighter pilot was convicted in November for aggravated sexual assault by a jury of four colonels and a lieutenant colonel. He was dismissed from the Air Force and sentenced to one year in prison. Lieutenant General Franklin overturned the jury conviction using “convening authority” - an absolute power of a singe military supervisor to dismiss a jury decision. The Lieutenant General’s decision has warranted outrage from members of Congress. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said “The military needs to understand that this could be a tipping point. I question whether, after this incident, there’s any chance a woman assaulted in that unit would ever say a word. … There’s a culture issue that’s going to have to be addressed here. And what this decision did –... - Laura

Matilda is totes over it. She really thinks you should just get in your little fucking boat and get the fuck outta here. Go catch a fish! (And then give it to her. NOM.) [True Fact: Iain and I were watching Striking Distance, the movie whence came the above-linked clip, and that scene just struck us as SO FUNNY that we reversed and rewatched it like a thousand times, until we were laughing so hard we were crying. And now it's just become a staple of conversation at Shakes Manor. Like, when I ask Iain if he's in the mood to watch a movie, and he suggests Timecop for the biebillionth time, just to annoy me, I am very likely to respond: "Get in your little fucking boat and get the fuck outta here!" When I mentioned this to Deeky recently, he found it and uploaded it to YouTube for me, because he is awesome.] As always, please feel welcome and encouraged to share pix of the fuzzy, feathered, or scaled members of your family in comments. - Laura

Morning in America 2.0 - http://www.shakesville.com/2013...
[Content Note: Drones.] Adam Serwer at Mother Jones: Obama Administration Says President Can Use Lethal Force Against Americans on US Soil. I encourage you to read the whole article, but I do want to highlight this piece of Attorney General Eric Holder's excerpted letter explaining the justification for the administration's position: The question you have posed is therefore entirely hypothetical, unlikely to occur, and one we hope no president will ever have to confront. It is possible, I suppose, to imagine an extraordinary circumstance in which it would be necessary and appropriate under the Constitution and applicable laws of the United States for the President to authorize the military to use lethal force within the territory of the United States. For example, the president could conceivably have no choice but to authorize the military to use such force if necessary to protect the homeland in the circumstances like a catastrophic attack like the ones suffered on December 7, 1941,... - Laura
