Amen. RT @mfrisque: Information literacy was created because our systems were so confounding. #litaforum
Actually, I think not. I think BI was created for that reason. IL is about WAY more than finding things. - Imitation lris
Iris, I agree. For example, IL is (or should be) about evaluating sources. I challenge my students to find the best sources to suit their purposes and not to settle for the first things they find. This is not to say, of course, that libraries don't employ some confounding systems. - marthalib
Yes, to all of that. Plus, there's an awful lot of Information Literacy involved in asking interesting questions, supporting arguments effectively, and organizing your own world of information in ways that help you think effectively, synthesize the information you've found, and negotiate between multiple viewpoints when coming up with your own position. Basically, there's a subsection of critical thinking that I think of when I think of IL. - Imitation lris
I can't remember the exact wording the presenter used... but I see what you're both saying. Real IL is about more than finding, and I agree with you on that. But a lot of library instruction that is called IL is still BI about how to use our complicated systems. And I am totally there with making our systems better rather than teaching people to use systems that aren't intuitive and they won't have access to in the future. Of course, until we make them more intuitive, we still have a lot of teaching to do. - lauren pressley
Ah, so the problem isn't really with IL but rather with us as teachers and with the systems we're saddled with. I can see that. - Imitation lris
