Iris, I agree. For example, IL is (or should be) about evaluating sources. I challenge my students to find the best sources to suit their purposes and not to settle for the first things they find. This is not to say, of course, that libraries don't employ some confounding systems.
- marthalib
Yes, to all of that. Plus, there's an awful lot of Information Literacy involved in asking interesting questions, supporting arguments effectively, and organizing your own world of information in ways that help you think effectively, synthesize the information you've found, and negotiate between multiple viewpoints when coming up with your own position. Basically, there's a subsection of critical thinking that I think of when I think of IL.
- lris
I can't remember the exact wording the presenter used... but I see what you're both saying. Real IL is about more than finding, and I agree with you on that. But a lot of library instruction that is called IL is still BI about how to use our complicated systems. And I am totally there with making our systems better rather than teaching people to use systems that aren't intuitive and they won't have access to in the future. Of course, until we make them more intuitive, we still have a lot of teaching to do.
- lauren pressley
Ah, so the problem isn't really with IL but rather with us as teachers and with the systems we're saddled with. I can see that.

Actually, let me share a link with you: http://flickrcc.bluemountains.net/ I love this site because it lets you search flickr by CC license and ranks images by interestingness. Sometimes it takes creative synonyms to find good images, but it's become my main place for finding pictures.

Wow. Kinda makes my constant work on the Disaster Plan a little more relevant. But really, how in the world do you plan for that?
- MLx
My thoughts exactly, MLx, because we are currently working on Emergency Preparedness plans. Dumbfounded by the 6 inches of rain in 75 minutes.

I'm a long way from buying one but have been researching the market. @srharris19 just bought an Asus Eee PC 904HA. You can see his unboxing here. http://is.gd/17xbV - I've also heard good things about Mini 1000 series from HP.
- James
I have the Acer Aspire One. The keyboard is good, but the linux support is a bit dicey. Everything works, mostly, but sometimes the networking doesn't work after a suspend.
- DJF
Thanks for the feedback! Still thinking, but this is helpful!

I have an older ASUS 900. It's a bit underpowered, but was also dirt cheap. Overall I'm happy with it.

I have the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE but new model is 1005 (10 hrs + of battery life). It's $400.
- Kenley Neufeld
Chad, does the 900 seem cramped to you? I love the battery life on Kenley's, but I'm also trying to find the smallest reasonable option, too. :)
- lauren pressley
I like my Asus Eee 1000HA a lot. I'm glad I went with the larger screen/keyboard, and the battery life seems good.
- Jàson Puçkett
So maybe what I'm hearing is that I shouldn't worry too much about an inch here or half a pound there if it means extra hours of battery life and comfortable hands. :)
- lauren pressley
Yes! I like our Acer Aspire 10 inch with the 6 cell battery. Still pretty light and I like the keyboard.
- marthalib
I second Martha's Recommendation. I love my acer.. even though it is a 8.5 inch screen. I love it! I know those who got the dell mini for 250 at their outlet and are very very happy too. If you are in the air for long periods, get the biggest battery you can.
- ♫Geek in the 410♫
a cool thing about the acers is that the 8.5 inch and the 10 inch have the same (larger) keyboard
- marthalib
you all are awesome. thanks for all the information! though, now I have even more models to consider. :)
- lauren pressley
Lauren: Thanks for asking the question; I'm also a long way from buying one, but learning from the great responses.
- Walt Crawford
They 900's keyboard is... interesting, yeah :) I wouldn't want to write a novel or any in-depth paper on it, but I've gotten pretty adjusted to the smaller keyboard for day-to-day use. It did take some time for it to feel natural though.

it depends on your criteria - ultraportability? battery life? keyboard usability? storage? OS? I have an Eee PC 4G which is ultraportable but compromises too much on kbd, battery life and storage. something like an aspire one with larger keyboard, more storage and better battery life is probably a good starting point.
- Richard Akerman
from BuddyFeed
The top two criteria for me were keyboard and battery. If you can't use the keyboard, then you won't use the device, so it's a waste of money. Once you've got a keyboard, the battery is the second criterion: the point of it being ultraportable is that you can just carry it everywhere. My Acer has a 4-hour battery life with the wifi turned on. I love it.

“Suddenly a bunch of people flocked to blogging tools,” he said. “We had never heard about of lot of those people. A number of people were manufacturing blogs from whole cloth for propaganda purposes. It was hard to know who they were, if they were credible. In Kenya, we knew who they were; we knew their favorite rugby team.”

Why I avoided it for this long - I hate JustOneMorePlace. But the rooms/groups seemed like a good idea.

It can be nice if I've been away from Twitter for a couple days. I follow so many fewer people on FriendFeed that I can scan a couple pages of posts and get a decent rundown of major stuff that I missed while offline.

Anytime Twitter breaks down, I'm on FriendFeed. Makes things easier.
- Paul Balcerak
Heh, two conflicting pieces of advice there. And unfortunately, Emily, I've already got 273 subscriptions(!) to twitterers I follow.

I love the idea of FriendFeed. I feel like it combines the best of Twitter and Facebook — clean, threaded, easy. It's neat to see the other social media activity of people I met through Twitter, and the "like" feature that adds items to your feed is a really great way for ideas and articles to spread, even better than the retweet. Or it would be, if FriendFeed caught on. I think that's...
