Evidence is mounting that installing apps directly on the iPhone is the cause of the bricking. Use iTunes only, even for updates.

Is that only with 3G Leo? I am using a jailbroken 1st gen with firmware 2.0 and I am installing many apps directly from the App Store on the phone. No problem as of now. - Dominic Tremblay

Oddly, my iPhone says there are 4 updates available and my iTunes says I'm up to date - even after syncing. - Renee Pie

I've only installed apps via appstore on the iphone and have yet to use iTunes and haven't had a single bricking issue. I've probably installed 50+ apps and god knows how many updates - Grant Gochnauer
Another reason not to buy an iPhone...I'll stick with Windows Mobile phones like my Q9H, it ain't perfect but it works. - David Ward
