Back in the 90's, my late cat Basil had a few grand mal seizures. He used to sleep between my feet so the seizure would wake me up. I'd place him on the floor and his thrashing would move him across the carpet. After a bit, he'd stop. His eyes would be open but he was non-responsive. After another minute, he'd regain his senses and meow plaintively as if he realized something unusual...

That's really scary. It's good you had people around to help out and get you to the hospital. I hated Dilantin while I was on it. I couldn't drink alcohol, and it made me drowsy at times. Plus it never completely stopped my seizures. There are more effective seizure medications with fewer side effects. The trouble is that they tend to be more effective.

I've had a CT Scan twice. The contrast dye IV makes you feel like you're having a hot flash. Nothing head related though. I had a bone scan and EKGs. I've also had a few things that I won't mention (because no one wants to think about 'em).

I'd like to reiterate my call for Facebook to open source the Friendfeed codebase (as AOL did when it bought Netscape). A federated OpenFriendfeed is the best for users - and fits Facebook's move toward an open social platform. I'll pay to run a server. Would you?

I do not agree. It destroyed netscape. let Facebook use the best features of FriendFeed in it. Keep the talent like the four ex-google founders. Open source is not the answer to everything. sometimes Closed Source is better for the users as well. Just keep the innovations coming and it will be fine

The Wave *protocal* might be a part of the answer... or just giving yourself over to whatever Google wants you to use might work (i.e. Wave, Reader, Gtalk, etc.)... but I don't really see Wave asdirect 1-for-1 FF replacement.

They open sourced the Facebook code base (fbopen)... the license is very restrictive, however. FB owns all code modifications. Probably be the same license for FF.

Leo - your last comment is why I think Facebook bought Friendfeed: "We need something more like Friendfeed. Or maybe Wave will be the answer." This is going to be a product they will launch in opposition of Google Wave. It will surface Q1 of 2010 and will have some of the same features that Wave has - but be closed sourced to Facebook.

Facebook doesn't seem to have a good reputation with those kind of thing. Facebook promised to open their chat/IM system via XMPP. More than a year has passed since they announced this XMPP system it still did not happen. We still have to rely on screen-scraping methods to implement Facebook chat on third-party IM systems (like the 3rd party Facebook chat plugin for pidgin called pidgin-facebook).

You know what, Jaiku was open sourced. And nobody uses it anymore. The fact that "it" (FB open sourcing FF) will happen or not is completely irrelevant. Because you will all be hopping on the next early adopter miracle train (read:service) anyway. So stop whining and move on. Federated this, federated that. identi.ca tried that. Again, no users. It's nice to talk the talk. Especially at times like this. You just gotta walk the darn walk afterwards. Which people usually forget to do.

Whoa... you should enhance your calm. Communities are finicky things and sources like Microsoft that are poo-pooing Open Source IMHO is the real problem. Me thinks that a better source of education to dissipate the FUD floating in the global porcelain bowel instead of modern political tactics are are needed to solve real problems.

Chrome OS = Android 2.0 for large laptop screens, Google Voice on Android and White Spaces will kill the $1 Trillion Telecom and ISP industry, you should talk about those ARM processor based netbooks that are coming out with Chrome browser in the next few months, they will take over the whole laptop market and start costing $150 with no contracts.

For whom is twitvid more likely to cause consumer confusion? If anyone, it would be Twitter (who have a long tradition of NOT protecting their actually much stronger trademark). It wouldn't be TWiT. Unless Twitvid is producing some general interest technology show. Oh wait, it's not. It looks like a Twitter-specific Vimeo. Even the logo is aimed at Twitter. If I were them I would respond to your C & D the same way I did when I first heard of TWiT. "And who you are you, exactly?"

1) I don't follow Leo's Twits. 2) Yes, I am aware that Leo has used the TWiT trademark longer than Twitter. 3) Or rather that Twitter really has never done anything with the trademark. But none of those things is relevant in the legal inquiry. Again, how are consumers going to be confused by the Twitvid site? They're clearly trying to confuse people into thinking they're a great site with which to upload videos to twitter. I.e., there is no confusion.

Yes, trademark holders should actually protect their trademark. But in this case, the party against whom it should have been protected was probably Twitter. As pretty much everyone knows, that horse has left the barn.

I think you know the answer to that question. Could another site or company call itself Twitter? In two years Twitter has become like Coke or Sears or Xerox. Does TWiT get mentioned all the time on CNN? Has your grandma heard of TWiT? Twitter is a trademark. And they've also trademarked "tweets."

While I am sure it was not intentional that the owners of twitvid.com used the 'Twit' name, out of courtesy they should comply right away with any crease/desist sent to them. If I was the owner of twitvid, I would change the name asap out of pure respect for Leo and the Twit brand he has worked hard to develop.

haha. good thing i'm not yours. or twitvid's. good luck with the boycott. i recognize you've got a lot of fans, and a hell of lot of pull. and i'll be the FIRST to say i'm not a trademark expert. but i'm not seeing a good reason for asking your fans to boycott a video site clearly aimed at twitter. and i felt the same way when you announced you were leaving twitter for jaiku, in part over trademark concerns. i agree you have a trademark. i'm just not seeing the violation.

I agree with mrshi that there's close to zero real-world chance of confusing twitvid with anything related to Leo. OTOH, if Leo doesn't actively defend the mark, he could be screwed sometime in the future when a truly infringing case arises. The legal system sucks all 'round.

I think Leo managed to work something out with Twitter though. Besides, it isn't just about the similarity of the name. It is the type of business the company is engaged in. TwitVid does video production, like TWiT, and that adds to the confusion.

What I don't get is, if they hadn't heard of TWiT how can anyone say it is a is an intententional violation and not one a service simply stating that it is part of Twitter eco-system hence the logo hence the twit. Surely it's not really about whether they were intentionally/knowingly doing it? It's just the fact that Leo HAS to go after people potentially infringing on his trademark, whether he likes it or not, because otherwise he will just LOSE it. Regardless of the situation.

Without a doubt, he should have been on the final 50 list. The contest doesn't seem to have any rules that would exclude him (just took a quick look). This way, they could have used any criteria for not choosing him as a final 10 contestant and/or the winner. By doing it this way, they may get attention, but as you noted, its not good attention and for owners of the winery, I'm sure this is not something they anticipated when they agreed to this contest.

The recently-released MacBook Pro firmware that promises to enable 3.0Gbps SATA connectivity has ironically been causing problems in third-party drives. Apple released the upgrade earlier this week, after users of the new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models reported that the notebooks were limited to 1.5Gbps SATA; this did not affect the speed of standard-fit hard-drives, but may have limited future performance should the user upgrade to a faster HDD or SSD. Now, some users with third-party drives already installed are reporting frequent pauses, usage spikes and data errors with the new firmware. Both traditional hard-drives and solid-state storage are presenting problems. One user found his Western Digital Scorpio Blue HDD now suffers intermittent data errors and that the whole machine freezes randomly. Meanwhile another user who has upgraded to an Intel X25-M SSD found his drive no longer works at all following the firmware update. Some have found that re-installing the original SATA...
