Oddly, no one has ever acknowledged the massive number of entries that Friendfeed pumps into my Facebook stream.
- Vezquex
Agree! Especially if u use @peoplebrowsr like me ;) really need to clean up the autopost mess. Wish somebody could invent some smart cross posting strategies and share their wisdom :)
- Jan Friman
from Nambu
I don't feed any of the SM stuff to facebook, waste of time, both for others and myself.
- Richard A.
Yeah, I'm with Gillmor, using FF as the primary tap into the SM hose. Figure it will eventually build brand and traffic back to FF.
- Thom Kennon
I agree with Loic and disagree with S.Gillmor, as much as I admire him, crossposting is broadcasting. Each of these services have their own flavor, a different set of friends. A different interaction is appropriate in each. It works best when we respect the differences and create unique exchanges on the various services we use.
- stephen harlow
Steve, problem is that you don't get the replies and FB comments so you don't really interact except on FF comments right?
- Loic Le Meur
I found something very interesting. I posted almost nothing on Facebook for the past year, so I didn't lose any of my high quality followers (which include CEOs and big name press from across the tech industry). But then I tried putting friendfeed/Twitter in there and I started getting complaints, so I stopped it. I now post things specifically for my Facebook friends on Facebook and try to let everyone know that my main place of posting is friendfeed now.
- Robert Scoble
I'm still trying to find the optimal ratio of posting. The problem is there simply isn't enough technology to do what I want. I may write something if no one accomplishes what I need for this.
- Jesse Stay
I never used facebook extensively and like to keep my accounts separate. I think friendfeed is the most intelligent of all social web apps.
- Ashish
Agreed. I've been more mindful of cross posting and never did it with my FB status.
- Mark Gehrke
I agree with Loic in cases where people use Twitter primarily as a tool for one to one or fragmented communications and the fact that he used "some people" and "most cases" leads me to believe some people don't fit the mold. I find myself being one of those. I currently cross-post >90% of my stuff to FF/FB/Twitter. That said, I consciously make an effort to put context in every one of my outbound messages & if something doesn't warrant cross-posting I don't do it.
- Mark Krynsky
A discreet compromise would be to use something like the Social RSS application in FB to show your routine Twitter traffic on a tab separate from your main page.
- Paul Robertson
When you get multiple duplicates of the same message on friendfeed because it's also posted to tumblr, thats the worst.
- Matt Robson
thank you all for your feedback. Looks like there are very different styles and the comments here are mostly from friendfeed lovers (which I understand why they like it), very different pattern from what I see from non friendfeed users though
- Loic Le Meur
Have you seen Jimmy Fallon's dupes, he needs to get his PA on it ASAP it's the social media equivalent of stuttering
- The Real sofarsoShawn
I had some problems with duplicate posting at first, but once I figured it out, it's been fine. FF is my principal gazinta, and it aggregatges all my gazoutas, but it doesn't multipost. That said, I try to keep the signal to bullshit ratio high....
- Alan Chamberlain
I like to be able to select (from FF0 what goes to FB like we can with Twitter.
- Kol Tregaskes
Loic 1 Gillmor 0 Let's keep them channels separate, they will find you if they love you. I love your Gillmor Gang however Steve! That's a sweet channel everyone should check out.
- Chad Harris
I have my Tweets going to FF and Facebook. Minus the @'s on Facebook. But I reply to comments on all three as I have notifications for Twitter and Facebook coming into FF.
- Araceli
from Nambu
Twitter should not be fed directly into Facebook in most cases, FB and Twitter are two completely different animals. Despite this bringing Facebook to Twitter is okay. The @replies are what pollutes the Twitter/FB Integration.
- Garin Kilpatrick
I agree with Loic and Scoble. Facebook is more real life friends and I share more personal and less techy stuff. Twitter is sort of like my id. Although now I'm giving friendfeed a go for a week so I may be making the switch full time. But, for the most part, I consider friendfeed and twitter to be the same result by different means. For me though, it remains to be seen which means I like better.
- James Poling
Scary stuff, Sarah. I mean really - mushrooms on an omelette? :) Seriously, though, it's good to see you're feeling better and back to blogging. Hope your path to a full recovery is a clear and short one...
- Thomas
Back in the 90's, my late cat Basil had a few grand mal seizures. He used to sleep between my feet so the seizure would wake me up. I'd place him on the floor and his thrashing would move him across the carpet. After a bit, he'd stop. His eyes would be open but he was non-responsive. After another minute, he'd regain his senses and meow plaintively as if he realized something unusual...

My sister had a few when she was very young and it was terrifying. I'm glad you're feeling better and I hope that you don't experience anything more.

Sarah - I'm glad you're feeling better, what a scary experience!

Oh my. Good luck with your neurologist appointment and I hope that you get the best diagnosis possible! I'm sorry about the medication with horrible side effects but glad that it exists and that you survived!

Cysticercosis doesn't sound like fun - hopefully you'll be able to kick it with just meds (if you do have it)...
- Thomas
On the other hand, the BBB wiki page talks about using Nanotechnology for treatment - you could be Cyber-Sarah! :)
- Thomas
That's really scary. It's good you had people around to help out and get you to the hospital. I hated Dilantin while I was on it. I couldn't drink alcohol, and it made me drowsy at times. Plus it never completely stopped my seizures. There are more effective seizure medications with fewer side effects. The trouble is that they tend to be more effective.
- John (bird whisperer)
Thx guys. It's really just about positive thinking right now... everybody tells me not to stress out.. um, yeah.
- Sarah Lane
Just think - nanotechnology! It's all about the tech with you, Sarah... :)
- Thomas
As for positive thinking, would it help if we started teasing about your sudden forced sobriety? :)
- Thomas
This whole sobriety thing is just ridiculous. Come on, science.
- Sarah Lane
Have you tried near-beer? Do you drink for the taste or the buzz?
- Thomas
I've had a CT Scan twice. The contrast dye IV makes you feel like you're having a hot flash. Nothing head related though. I had a bone scan and EKGs. I've also had a few things that I won't mention (because no one wants to think about 'em).

You world travelers have to be careful of those French Foreign Lesions! Take care.

I'd like to reiterate my call for Facebook to open source the Friendfeed codebase (as AOL did when it bought Netscape). A federated OpenFriendfeed is the best for users - and fits Facebook's move toward an open social platform. I'll pay to run a server. Would you?
I can't imagine that the terms of the acquisition would permit this to happen. Oh, wait... Facebook take FriendFeed open source? Maybe in two or three years after they squeeze every bit of life out of it, ala Google/Jaiku
- Ken Sheppardson
Would that mean there would be dozens of Friendfeeds all trying to get us to come to them?
- Mark
I don't think I'd pay, but I'd love to have it open source
- Jake Anderson
Worked for AOL. We got Mozilla and they got a much improved Netscape.
- Leo Laporte
Leo, I think you have a little too much "hope" on this. Maybe you're just thinking if Facebook was smart, then they'd do that.
- Mark
Facebook is much smarter than you're giving them credit for. I think.
- Leo Laporte
great idea Leo, i'm 'cautiously optimistic' at this point in time about the future of FriendFeed... lets hope for the best people
- Chris Heath
There is no value in that to them. Why open source something that give them a competitive edge.
- binmugahid
I do not agree. It destroyed netscape. let Facebook use the best features of FriendFeed in it. Keep the talent like the four ex-google founders. Open source is not the answer to everything. sometimes Closed Source is better for the users as well. Just keep the innovations coming and it will be fine
- hasanahmad
They've got the Friendfeed team. That's probably what they really wanted. Getting the open source community working on the FF codebase and contributing it back to Facebook is a win for everyone.
- Leo Laporte
On the other hand, I ike to see Laconica (identi.ca) getting more like ff.
- Chanux
Open-sourcing Communicator may have ultimately destroyed Netscape as a brand but without that move, I suspect we'd all still be developing for IE6. Great call, Leo.
- Jared Smith
You're assuming that Facebook bought the company JUST to get the developers, and not because they want to integrate many/most of the features into their service. If they want the features, they don't want a bunch of clones competing with them.
- Joel Bennett
I'll send you a hefty donation for that Leo.
- JCunwired
bravestface: That's not FB's fault you let them in. sheesh.
- Gus
when will twitter be back up any 1 know
- daveccorey
There already is an open source clone of twitter - see identi.ca and laconia or whatever it's called
- Doug Holton
True. very True Gus. My own fault. Perhaps I need to setup an Alias account that encompasses what i really want
- bravestface
I already run a Laconica server at http://army.twit.tv - I don't think we need another Twitter clone. We need something more like Friendfeed. Or maybe Wave will be the answer.
- Leo Laporte
hay hay hay, sin duda un tema un tanto escabrozo, pero entre Facebook y Google, esto no lleva a nada bueno.. i'ts a hard theme, no doubt about that, but between facebook and google we are going to hell !!!!!!
- Đoи яамoη
The Wave *protocal* might be a part of the answer... or just giving yourself over to whatever Google wants you to use might work (i.e. Wave, Reader, Gtalk, etc.)... but I don't really see Wave asdirect 1-for-1 FF replacement.
- Ken Sheppardson
They open sourced the Facebook code base (fbopen)... the license is very restrictive, however. FB owns all code modifications. Probably be the same license for FF.
- Kurt
In know people that have replaced their email with Twitter....that just isn't right...we need one locator that many systems can reach
- bravestface
Great idea Leo. Now let's see what they do, if they're listening.
- Kelly Mitchell
Leo - your last comment is why I think Facebook bought Friendfeed: "We need something more like Friendfeed. Or maybe Wave will be the answer." This is going to be a product they will launch in opposition of Google Wave. It will surface Q1 of 2010 and will have some of the same features that Wave has - but be closed sourced to Facebook.
- Jeff Vreeland
I see what you mean. Facebook and Google though don't really open source their web apps
- Doug Holton
Facebook doesn't seem to have a good reputation with those kind of thing. Facebook promised to open their chat/IM system via XMPP. More than a year has passed since they announced this XMPP system it still did not happen. We still have to rely on screen-scraping methods to implement Facebook chat on third-party IM systems (like the 3rd party Facebook chat plugin for pidgin called pidgin-facebook).
- Gideon Guillen
I would love to see friendfeed become opensource. Mostly as a developer I would love to see the code. See how friendfeed works.
- mikemcmullan
An "open FriendFeed" could be Facebook's chance to get something lined up to compete with Google Wave. Without it, Google and Twitter are going to own the real-time communication space.
- Derek Gathright
OS FF would be awesome, but making it a federated service is an entirely different ball of wax. Just ask the Wave guys. They said during the original IO presentation that federation was one of the harder parts (though FF would be easier w/o the real time editing piece, but still).
- Patrick Sullivan
I think a integrated RSS/FB/FF/GW/Twitter client will be an interesting real time inflection point
- Jim Posner
I totally agree Leo. I can't help but think that this deal is going to be a massive success or a massive flop - nothing in the middle! It's simple things like opening the FF source that can help make it a massive success IMHO.
- Chris Cathcart

wow Leo you sure know how to get a topic started
- Joe Geeting
I actually was hoping Twitter would be the one to grab it up. Seems like a natural progression for Twitter to make. I just hope Facebook doesn't bury it and they actually use it. As far as open source it? Could be interesting.
- Michael Bower
In a secure and closed environment it could be a powerful communication/collaboration tool for businesses. Features of a chat, but persistent. Ability to share photos & files...
- Ken Bauer
I would love for this to happen. Federated Friendfeed servers would be quite fun and is the logical step for a great Internet service which aggregates disparate information from all over.
- rob friedman
You know what, Jaiku was open sourced. And nobody uses it anymore. The fact that "it" (FB open sourcing FF) will happen or not is completely irrelevant. Because you will all be hopping on the next early adopter miracle train (read:service) anyway. So stop whining and move on. Federated this, federated that. identi.ca tried that. Again, no users. It's nice to talk the talk. Especially at times like this. You just gotta walk the darn walk afterwards. Which people usually forget to do.
- Vlad Bobleanta
Whoa... you should enhance your calm. Communities are finicky things and sources like Microsoft that are poo-pooing Open Source IMHO is the real problem. Me thinks that a better source of education to dissipate the FUD floating in the global porcelain bowel instead of modern political tactics are are needed to solve real problems.
- Myrddin Emrys
If FriendFeed went open source identi.ca / lamonica would be dealt a serious blow. FriendFeed could become even more powerful if the people could tinker with the code and add many features that remain missing, or strengthen features that currently are weak. It will be interesting to se how FB utilizes their newest acquisition...
- Randy Shapiro
"Plugging into the headphone jack of either an iPhone or iPod Touch, the dongle takes a swipe of your card, the seller enters the purchase data and you do your best penless John Hancock on the touchscreen. After that, a receipt is delivered by email and the app retains geotagging data for each transaction. Spiffy, right? Well, there is a surcharge to pay, and it's still in early alpha testing in New York,"

I like the idea, but not the name. Seems kind of bias right off the bat. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the innovation that Google brings to the table, but to name the freakin' show after Google?? Can you tell that I am a big fan of Dvorak :)
- rodney.franklin
Think it was a big mistake to put the name "google" in the title, but will probably be a great show anyways.

If he has a TM on twit then has he defended it against twitter ? That has twit in the name.
- Jimmy Gardner
from iPhone
If the company called itself twittervid I bet leo would leave them alone. The TM needs defending because Leo's product includes video. LOTS of video.
- G Dub of the Carolinas
It's the combination of the word TWiT with audio or video content that causes the problem. We're cool with Twitter, twitpic, etc. as long as they're not doing audio or video shows.
- Leo Laporte
Seems very reasonable, Leo. Have you sent them a C&D?
- Eric Florenzano
Yeah. And they refused so we've filed suit. twitvid.io was very cooperative - they've agreed to rebrand - please use them instead. They're really great guys, too.
- Leo Laporte
Ouch, doesn't sound fun but you've got to defend your trademark. Bookmarking twitvid.io.
- Eric Florenzano
I also like tweetreel for the iPhone. Tweet is a much better word than twit for these things, don't you think? ;-)
- Leo Laporte
For whom is twitvid more likely to cause consumer confusion? If anyone, it would be Twitter (who have a long tradition of NOT protecting their actually much stronger trademark). It wouldn't be TWiT. Unless Twitvid is producing some general interest technology show. Oh wait, it's not. It looks like a Twitter-specific Vimeo. Even the logo is aimed at Twitter. If I were them I would respond to your C & D the same way I did when I first heard of TWiT. "And who you are you, exactly?"
- mrshl
1) I don't follow Leo's Twits. 2) Yes, I am aware that Leo has used the TWiT trademark longer than Twitter. 3) Or rather that Twitter really has never done anything with the trademark. But none of those things is relevant in the legal inquiry. Again, how are consumers going to be confused by the Twitvid site? They're clearly trying to confuse people into thinking they're a great site with which to upload videos to twitter. I.e., there is no confusion.
- mrshl
Yes, trademark holders should actually protect their trademark. But in this case, the party against whom it should have been protected was probably Twitter. As pretty much everyone knows, that horse has left the barn.
- mrshl
I think you know the answer to that question. Could another site or company call itself Twitter? In two years Twitter has become like Coke or Sears or Xerox. Does TWiT get mentioned all the time on CNN? Has your grandma heard of TWiT? Twitter is a trademark. And they've also trademarked "tweets."
- mrshl
Good thing you're not a lawyer, mrshi.
- Leo Laporte
While I am sure it was not intentional that the owners of twitvid.com used the 'Twit' name, out of courtesy they should comply right away with any crease/desist sent to them. If I was the owner of twitvid, I would change the name asap out of pure respect for Leo and the Twit brand he has worked hard to develop.
- Alex Knight
haha. good thing i'm not yours. or twitvid's. good luck with the boycott. i recognize you've got a lot of fans, and a hell of lot of pull. and i'll be the FIRST to say i'm not a trademark expert. but i'm not seeing a good reason for asking your fans to boycott a video site clearly aimed at twitter. and i felt the same way when you announced you were leaving twitter for jaiku, in part over trademark concerns. i agree you have a trademark. i'm just not seeing the violation.
- mrshl
twitvid.io did, in fact, agree to rebrand. They've been great.
- Leo Laporte
I agree with mrshi that there's close to zero real-world chance of confusing twitvid with anything related to Leo. OTOH, if Leo doesn't actively defend the mark, he could be screwed sometime in the future when a truly infringing case arises. The legal system sucks all 'round.
- Roger Benningfield
from BuddyFeed
Leo has every right to request a boycott and I'll support it. Change the name.
- Steve Gillmor
from iPhone
When I think of 'twit" I think of Twitter first. Should we boycott Twitpic and Twitter too?
- Brett Nordquist
I agree with Leo here. Assuming US trade mark law works similarly to our trade mark law he has a valid complaint. The name has the potential to create confusion in the minds of whoever is familiar with TWiT and that is a lot of people. I also understand that Leo almost has to take steps to defend his trade mark both to retain his ability to enforce it in future and as a deterrent to...

Twitter doesn't distinguish twit in the logo like these guys do.. And twitter is not doing anything remotely close to what twit does.. TwitVid.com does video. Twit does video.
- Anton
I think Leo managed to work something out with Twitter though. Besides, it isn't just about the similarity of the name. It is the type of business the company is engaged in. TwitVid does video production, like TWiT, and that adds to the confusion.
- Paul Jacobson
Twitvid is such an obvious violation it would almost seem they are doing this out of some kind of spite. I call on all TWIT supporters to not only support Leo but also comment in every blog and web site stating this situation so other copyright pirates would think twice before pulling a stunt like this one. mrshl...if you are surely an attorney ambulance chaser I suggest you go back to night school and refresh your knowledge regarding copyright law.
- earl wallace
What I don't get is, if they hadn't heard of TWiT how can anyone say it is a is an intententional violation and not one a service simply stating that it is part of Twitter eco-system hence the logo hence the twit. I had never heard of TWiT, and I suspect 99% of twitter have never heard of TWiT either.
- Paul Kinlan
Earl, I don't think your personal attacks are very helpful.
- mrshl
Surely it's not really about whether they were intentionally/knowingly doing it? It's just the fact that Leo HAS to go after people potentially infringing on his trademark, whether he likes it or not, because otherwise he will just LOSE it. Regardless of the situation.
- Jalada
Looking at this objectively, this is actually not as binary as people make it out to be. On the surface, without any other knowledge, you see a name like TwitVid and you could come to the conclusion that they are somehow showing/pirating/someway using videos from TWiT. However, if you go to the site TwitVid.com, it is clearly associated with Twitter. From the logo, look and feel, text...

Geoff: he should have gotten on the final 50 list if he had the most popular video. I'm not saying he should have gotten the final job, either. But yes they did screw up. By not letting the crowd have their day they are no better than Iranian elections. I think the same folks who did the Twitter Suggested User List did the judging here. Lame.
- Robert Scoble
Who is running the PR department over there? Horrible decision by murphy goode winery.

For a company hoping to employ social media, it's obvious they don't have a clue.

I would think that we can talk about it for a few more hours....but then we need to stop uttering the words Murphy Goode. Remember the old adage about bad publicity. So let's not give them any publicity at. all.
- Mike Dowden
Wasn't the whole idea to reach out & market to the twitter community? Obviously Martin was able to garner more eyes than anyone else.
- David Bailey
I'm guessing they already have a person picked out that they want and are using this simply as a marketing ploy. Just say no to Murphy Goode. Plenty of other good wines to drink.
- David Bailey
these plays for jobs are really sad, prey on the desperation of new media kids.
- sean percival
Murphy Goode has no idea how badly they've butchered their company. They got more press since he uploaded his video than they ever got before and now its all for nothing because everyone who discovered them will turn against them. The tech community is very powerful and very loyal.

Michael: I have no idea, but they should be watching Twitter Search at minimum for their brand name if they want to play in this field.
- Robert Scoble
I missed this whole story. Is the deal a Wine company was offering a special job and Martin applied and lost?

- Robert Scoble
My friend made a very cool video.... more clever than some of the other finalists - and he didn't make the cut. http://tr.im/pMcK
- Lisa Osborne
Was the contest a popularity one as in the most votes wins or was it a best person wins deal?
- Mark
Mark: popularity should at least be considered it seems if you're going to ask the public to participate.
- Robert Scoble
Without a doubt, he should have been on the final 50 list. The contest doesn't seem to have any rules that would exclude him (just took a quick look). This way, they could have used any criteria for not choosing him as a final 10 contestant and/or the winner. By doing it this way, they may get attention, but as you noted, its not good attention and for owners of the winery, I'm sure this is not something they anticipated when they agreed to this contest.
- Jeff Pomeroy
Interesting logical flaw - they selected the finalists based on their measured ability to generate web2.0 traffic. Logical next step is that this person could do the same for their brand. THEN they completely fail to proceed, with the person left feeling 'screwed over, plus thousands of potential clients that left their emails and also feel 'screwed over'. The logical next step is that...
