Anyone still need a Google Wave invite? I got a bunch. You too can get very excited, then try it out, then wonder what it's supposed to do, then get bored with it and forget about it till someone on Twitter mentions it. All this excitement/non-excitement can be yours!
Has anyone gotten an invitation, logged in, done nothing, and then forgotten about it? I mean, I would never do that or anything. But maybe someone else has?
- Joan
Google Wave invites are the Beanie Babies of Library 2.0
- Rochelle Rochelle
Heck, Liam, for the right amount I'd take one. Unless that also required doing something with it... (Rochelle: Are you sure Google Wave invites aren't turning into the AOL CDs of Web 2.0?)
- Walt Crawford
That definitely works, too, Walt. Beanie Babies came to mind because any time I do a house de-clutter I come across at least one cache of BBs, from Miss 16's multi-year BB mania.
- Rochelle Rochelle
Actually, Rochelle, Beanie Babies is better: Highly desired at one point, not so much later on. I don't remember any time that AOL CDs were highly desired...
- Walt Crawford
laura x: were you wearing a tunic/long shirt on top?
- DJF
No, I kinda like 'em. Just it was like one day, no textured tights, the next day, many textured tights.
- s t e v e
I'm wearing purple & black tiger-striped tights today, in fact.
- Nancy Sp♠id
as far as i'm concerned, they never left. i still have my burgundy prefect textured tights from high school. (became a prefect just to wear burgundy tights. only prefect to ever get detentions. heh.)
- jambina
jambina: they're definitely "back". all the clonegirls at MPOW have been wearing uggs, tights, and a tunic since the fall. I really can't tell them apart most days. You probably pull it off in a much more distinctive fashion than that.
- DJF
DJF: No. Black Fluevog boots, black textured tights, black pleated mini skirt, olive green shirt, black jacket. I like any color as long as it's drab.
- laura x
laura, If I saw that outfit, I'd probably call them "leggings" rather than tights. It's all about the whole outfit, and around here, "tights" are generally considered to be all one needs to wear on the bottom.
- DJF
Tights are not pants. But yeah, I prefer textured tights to plain ones, especially if I'm wearing a somewhat conservative outfit.
- cecily
ugh, what Cecily said: tights are not pants. or they shouldn't be, at least.
- holly
djf - if "distinctive fashion" = ZOMG WOMAN THAT IS A LOT OF COLOUR YOU ARE WEARING then yes.
- jambina
jambina, I've seen how you dress normally, and that's never been my reaction to your outfits.
- DJF
Tights are not pants. Leggings do not have full feet.
- Rachel Walden
rachel, good point about the leggings. I never see anybody's feet because the girls all wear uggs, so I don't know if they're tights or leggings.
- DJF
For me, "tights" means "woollen stockings". And I really wish/hope they'll get popular because they're wonderful in winter and at the moment you can buy any colour as long as it's black or blue.
- Deborah Fitchett
Cause a bitch was in a bad mood this weekend after...well, he met a bad kisser. :(
- Derrick
bad kissing is the worst. THE. WORST.
- Mary Carmen
I like the sex plenty. but there's something very awesome about a good makeout session. And not to toot my own horn, but i've been told that I am somewhat gifted in this area. but maybe they were just being nice. but my ex girlfriend told me that I should teach a college course in making out. so i got that going for me....which is nice.
- Morgan Haley
my one source of makeouts doesn't like to kiss (beyond a quick smooch on the lips) anymore. not since she got pregnant with our first child...in late 2004. :(
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I miss the days of hot makeout sessions and heavy petting. It's like as adults we just kind of zoom right past it and head for the sex as quickly as possible. I would be more than content to just make out with a guy for hours on end. It's hard to find a guy who agrees (and is also attracted to me LOL)
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
If I could remember doing either of those things, I'd offer an opinion. But, despite my three children, I no longer have any clear recollection of either activity.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
how can it be hot if it doesn't lead to sex?
- Loc
lol....sorry Zamms, I don't have any plans to make that kind of announcement.
- Mary Carmen
Actually I freaked out Haggis, Victor Ganata, and Gunny last night by saying that I'd be happy if I could have both wang and boobs on the same person.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Also Snow White, and Winnie the Pooh. It was a double feature, if I recall correctly. When we got home, I started bawling. I was upset because Rabbit made Tigger stop bouncing.
- josh neff, geek at large
Also: Fantasia (the 1940 version). Probably saw it around 1976 or 1977.
- Kevin Fox
DAMN, I want to see Fantasia. I don't think I ever have. :(
- Derrick
on the other side of the parking lot the were playing "up in smoke" so we were walking back and forth checking them both out. thats what channel surfing was in the 70's
- royce
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but I don't actually *remember* being in the theatre and seeing it, just that I was 4 and on vacation with my parents on Cape Cod. I definitely remember that my dad took me fishing after.
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
Mine was at the drive-in too, Nikki! We had a van and my parents would take us in our PJs and put us to bed in the back when we got tired.
- Jàson Puçkett
Star Wars, 1977. To be fair, I was 4 and I don't *specifically* remember seeing much of the movie (and now I can't remember what I remember and what I know from seeing it later)- but I remember going, with my grandfather and older brothers, and I remember being very cold in the Eastgate movie theater, in Chattanooga (now a YMCA).
- ÉllbeeÇee
Purple Rain, and my mom covered my entire face when the sex scenes came on. >.<
- Anna Haro
Pinocchio, I think. On rerelease in the mid-1980s. The first first-run one I can remember was, I think, Hot to Trot. *sigh*
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Unfortunately? ET. I was terrified and screaming. I think I was about 3.
- Laura H.
I know it wasn't the first, but I clearly remember going to see "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" when I was five or six and having my mom cover my eyes when the shaman guy ripped the still beating heart out of the other guy's chest. My parents didn't realize it was going to be so much scarier than "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
- Shannon Jiménez
I remember going to the drive in with my sister and me in our pajamas, falling asleep in the back seat during The Poseidon Adventure. First film I remember seeing inside was Star Wars.
- Ken Sheppardson
I don't remember. It was probably at the drive-in. Anna, my Dad took me and my bros to watch Purple Rain. It was awesome :D
- Rodfather
Race for your life Charlie Brown is the first title I recall, but I know I saw films before that
- RAPatton

I loved it too, once I saw it as an adult. at 8 or 9 (when I saw it the first time), I think I was a wee bit too young to understand what was going on. A parent took a group of her daughter's friends to the movies for her birthday, and she chose an R-rated movie.
- cecily
I was not allowed to see Empires Strike Back. I got a glimpse of the theater and the lines though.
- Santa CW™
I remember seeing The Neverending Story with my grandparents at Ford City Mall in Chicago. I also remember seeing Ghostbusters at the world's largest drive in theater (also in Chicago, now long since closed) with my aunt and uncle. I remember Gremlins was playing on another, smaller screen, which was almost watchable from where were parked.
- Andy Bakun
Hm. It could have been Popeye. I remember seeing that in the theater.
- Rodfather
Snow White, the 1983 re-release -- I was 5. Pretty sure I saw the Rainbow Brite movie in the theaters, as well as Gremlins, the following year. I'm told I saw Fox & The Hound in the theaters in 1981, but I was 2 and don't really remember it.
- Alix Whitmire
First movie I remember seeing in the theater was Lady and the Tramp.
- Shawn Whitmire
Every Which Way But Loose. I think Dad thought since the previews had a chimp in it, how bad could it be for 7 year olds? *edit* seems we were nine. That explains it.
- Michael W. May
You know, I keep thinking it was Empire, but I wasn't even 2 yet, so I'm guessing it was actually Return of the Jedi.
- Rachel Walden
Hey, I'm just bummed to realize that my first movie might have been the ewok one instead of Empire. ;)
- Rachel Walden
And this is where the "what makes you feel old" thread collides with the "first movie" thread. Shit.
- DJF
Excalibur (thought it was ET) ! thanks imdb (I remember my mom holding her hands in front of my eyes).. oh wait. I remember seeing Empire Strikes back and that came out the year before.. so that must be the answer
- JSNFLMNG
It was either Empire Strikes Back or ET. I do remember that Empire Strikes Back was the first movie I saw in another state than my home state. Labyrinth was the second.
- Arlan Koizumi
Beauty and the Beast...I recall going to movies before then, vaguely, but I have clear memories of going to that.
- Abigail
I lived in Maryville, MO for my senior year of high school. I took a couple of classes at NWMSU then. Cool to see something interesting happening there.

"Jordan Siegel, an associate professor at the Harvard Business School, says the American economy would benefit if more firms adopted this model of shared gain and shared sacrifice."

I've had people email me and even call me on the phone to ask about it, but I actually had nothing to do with the making of this video.
- Liam Sullivan
Okay, so after having my scalp massaged and a LARGE glass of wine at the salon, perhaps what I should have said was in response to the discussion (not original post): I post pics because I like to share some of my life with y'all. And they tend to be random and silly. Because I like being random and silly. And it I hurt anyone, I apologize.
Does your library have a policy for what to do when a patron leaves behind a flash drive with no name or identifying details on it? Do you load the drive and attempt to identify (and then notify) the patron from the files on the drive?
I'm particularly interested in academic-library contexts, but other types of library policies are welcome too. Our increasingly-large pile of orphaned flash drives thanks you!
- Catherine Pellegrino
Whoa, two responses before I'd even posted my follow-up comment! Thanks, Steve and Iris.
- Catherine Pellegrino
Also, I'm going to check with campus IT to see what they do for flash drives found in the public computer labs.
- Catherine Pellegrino
Catherine - at UTC we opened a doc file or two to see if we can glean a name, and then we tag it with the name and email the student. Here at NCSU we just toss it in a lost & found drawer, as far as I know.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
I think we had a thread on this before (started by Andrew?) Seems perverse not to do this. If they were that freaked out about privacy, they shouldn't have put their sensitive junk on a flash drive in the first place.
- s t e v e
999 people out of 1,000 would thank you for looking for their name in the docs. The 1,000th can deal.
- s t e v e
Also, in an academic context it's usually pretty easy to spot papers written for a class, and those papers have a pretty good chance of having a name right there at the top of the first page, so we rarely see anything "sensitive." At least, I never have.
- lris' ghost
Yep, that's pretty much what we're doing - we'll hold it for a day or so, and if nobody claims it, poke as carefully as we can into the contents to see if we can find the owner's name. Often we don't even have to open files to get at this info: filenames are sufficient.
- Catherine Pellegrino
yep, i asked before. pretty much what steve and iris have said were the consensus and it's what we still do. if they aren't claimed after like 2 months i think we wipe the drive of everything
- Sir Shuping
A lot of those things are done at our library. And if it can't be identified or isn't claimed, they're wiped and given out to the next person who says "do you have a flash drive I can use?"
- Liam Sullivan
we also look at the files and try to identify/notify the owner. if unclaimed (after *several* months), we reformat it and either use them or loan them out.
- ~Courtney F.
Thanks, all, this is super-helpful. Right now we're looking at just delivering all flash drives to the 24-hr (staffed) computer lab in the library basement, since IT is telling us that most drives there get claimed. At least this way, we'll have a consistent policy to tell students when they come to the desk looking for their lost drive.
- Catherine Pellegrino
If you found a wallet, would you poke around inside to see if you could find identifying information? I think it would be the same for a flash drive. Would be owner be more upset about (a) losing all those documents/term papers or (b) having you know his/her/its name & info?
- Betsy (bentley) Vera
(I mention wallets because I've found four of them while walking the dog. None were stolen, they had all fallen out of bags of pockets. Most were found within half a block of the owner's house (one was in the snow right outside the door). The exception was the one from a security guard, but I found it on his/her patrol route. That one included driver's license, credit cards, firearms license, work ID, social security card, and birth certificate (!). If I'd wanted a new identity, I'd been all set.)
- Betsy (bentley) Vera
this thread should go in the next LSW zine since the theme is gonna be lost and found ...
- Laura Norvig
I'd rather put the contents of some of those drives in the zine. :)
- s t e v e
We look for files - ideally one which says "Contact details in case of lost and found!" which a few people have, otherwise assignments/course notes/CVs (er, that's New Zealandish for "resumes") etc. No-one's complained. By contrast, we once had someone ask if we could email the entire college student population to ask if anyone had found and could return it.
