A list of companies that were blind-sided by the internet, they didn’t understand the impacts of the power shift to the participants, or how fast information would spread, or were just plain ignorant. - mediaeater

But the spray and pray approach won’t do for a certain breed of advertiser who in this economy “need guaranteed impressions and view counts,” said Break Media CEO Keith Richman, even for projects that promise product integration. Marketing is as important as distribution, said Sean Carey, senior executive vp, Sony Pictures Television, which manages Crackle.com, yet another hub for original video content. Carey said that most of Crackle’s various distribution arrangements include some level of promotional guarantees, and when they don’t, Sony account managers are constantly contacting partners looking to receive better placement for Crackle’s shows. So as deals get tougher to land in a medium that is still finding its business model, can all these companies make it? “I believe the answer is no,” offered Jordan Levin, CEO of Generate - mediaeater

In regards the OpenSocial code, version 0.9 is due out at the beginning of next year. Glazer was asked to speculate on when version 1.0 would be released. "The functionality of 0.9 feels 1.0-worthy. But we don't want to stretch beyond what we know," he said. - mediaeater

President-elect Barack Obama last week named Susan Crawford, a University of Michigan professor of communications law, and Ken Werbach, a Wharton School assistant professor and former counsel for new technology policy at the FCC during the Clinton administration, to head a transition team examining FCC issues. The team will look at agency policies and personnel. With President-elect Obama’s transition team expected to knock on the FCC’s door this week to begin the transition process, it’s beginning to look like there may be no additional votes on major TV issues before Mr. Martin gets replaced. - mediaeater

Radio is an even better example. In its 1940s heyday, it was the center of national entertainment. Then, in the 1950s, television began stealing radio’s biggest stars, like Jack Benny and Abbott and Costello. National advertisers — radio’s revenue base — followed the talent. “Radio, actually shockingly, was pronounced dead in 1953,” says Susan J. Douglas, chair of the communication studies department at the University of Michigan. But the industry revitalized itself by tapping into new markets. First it stumbled upon the youth music market, congregating around the car radio. Then radio innovators found other neglected markets, including underground music movements, longer-form news and talk radio. Along the way, radio’s business model changed; the medium cultivated new niche advertisers, rather than national advertisers, to pay for its new niche programming. - mediaeater

Embedding high quality YouTube videos: The &fmt=18 trick doesn't work here, but a similar trick does. For each of the URLs in the embeddable code that you get from YouTube, add &ap=%2526fmt%3D18 onto the end, like so: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MuqiG... &ap=%2526fmt%3D18"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MuqiG..." type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> - mediaeater
