lris's Protest SOPA coupons, now on SLA Academic Blog. (I have it on very good authority that the author of this blog post wanted to write nothing more than THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER AND YOU SHOULD ALL GET INVOLVED RIGHT NOW I MEAN YESTERDAY, but then worked the post over a bit to be more appropriate to the venue.)

"As a long-time editor of a scholarly journal, I review a substantial amount of new scholarship in my field, almost daily. While many academics in the humanities and social sciences are still producing substantive, rigorous, high-quality scholarship, I have noticed a growing trend that disturbs me and others devoted to rigorous research: Too many academics—veterans and neophytes alike—are producing scholarship that appears to have traded careful, methodical, fully developed intellectual work for quick and dirty publication."

So I'm answering a questionnaire about one of the most prominent transportation journal's and its peer review process. It's interesting, but I definitely feel bad. I know that they aren't considered one of the most prestigious journals in the field, but they are prolific and everybody uses it. I'm trying to think of an analogy here. Impact snobbery
Dr. Frank's What's-it: Insultingly small amounts of money and the myth that we'll all get the money back at shows and in merch - http://www.doktorfrank.com/archive...
"The more I think and find out about it the worse it seems. I used this figure elsewhere but I think people should see it. A band on my label got a check from me for digital that came mostly from iTunes for about $900. That was for a 2 month period. To get that same amount of money they'd have to get streamed 200000 times. Two hundred thousand! If they got a stream a day it would take over 547 years to make that same amount of money. Now you tell me why this should be the future for artists and labels and how it's just? All the while Spotify grows and reaps the real profit. Think about this when you support them. Even if you don't have a pay account they make money. They've monetized piracy by doling out insultingly small amounts of money and the myth that we'll all get the money back at shows and in merch. It's bullshit."

This is one reason why I'm rethinking my streaming subscriptions. It also makes me think of overdrive.

WHY DO USians NEED PASSPORTS TO GET INTO CANADA?! IT'S JUST ANOTHER STATE! ... (This declaration did not go over well with the nice Canadian Border Agent... who was even more offended when I said I had checked the US government website to be sure it wouldn't be a problem. "You knew you were going to Canada, why wouldn't you check what the Canadian Government has to say about requirements?!") Good Times.

Did you write this tagline? "our library technology conference is better than yours" Guessing yes, since Our is not capitalized?
- The Ghost of Library Past
It's interesting to see the public's view of what should be acceptable behaviour in a library compared to what a librarian's view. (The latent racism is annoying though.)

"This paper examines users' comments on the Facebook pages of 20 American academic libraries and subdivides them into 22 categories. A total of 3,513 posts were examined and analyzed in various ways, including how many of the posts included user comments and how many had none; how many comments were included in each post; and what the percentage of user participation was on the library walls, in terms of "likes" and comments. The most significant findings are that approximately 91% of the posts do not include any comments, over 82% of user participation is expressed via the "like" functionality and most comments on academic libraries' Facebook pages are not uploaded by prospective users (i.e., college and university faculty and students) but rather by library personnel, employees affiliated with the same institution as the library, and alumni."

Moderately interesting though not very provocative.

I'm actually rather provoked by that pull quote (on way to mtg, can't read article yet). Only because I hate it when "employees affiliated with the same institution" as the library are excluded from consideration as prospective users of the library. Our school has 100's of non-faculty employees who also have a strong commitment to and participation in our educational mission, and value learning for themselves as well: we're not their library too?

I guess we should close all or facebook pages then? :)

I think we should keep trying new ways to engage our users, be aware of trends, but stop worrying about the Joneses.
- Georgie Bestie
I had problems with the article. I don't assume that FB success requires direct engagement in the form of comments--and in any case, it's anecdata (perhaps not for the 20 institutions, but for any broader assertions). Not that I'm spending hundreds of hours on public library FB use or anything...
- Walt Crawford
The library's facebook page is primarily an outreach and marketing page. One might argue that comments from alumni are an indication of the success of the page, especially if the page helps drive fundraising for the institution as a whole.

Oh, and what GB says--although I think it doesn't hurt to see what the Joneses are doing as a form of benchmark. Although, in this "study," the Joneses weren't doing very well either.

If you want to be truly libpunk, you have to have a punk IT department. And guess who is currently looking for a job... ;) Just a suggestion...

"The police may have forcibly evicted slumberers and their tents set up Wednesday night by Occupy Cal protesters on campus, but never let it be said that Berkeley students aren’t creative. Replacing the tents we have — fittingly enough for a storied institution of learning — books, or rather books made to look like tents. Symbolic perhaps, but making a point nonetheless."
