Imagine a world where there is no money. Would it be better than this one? I actually think it probably would be... People could choose to do whatever they want and everybody would have their basic services provided for. It would be an all volunteer work-force who would work towards providing the basic services
Have you been watching Star Trek again? I'm kidding, but I see that Mark has pointed this out also. I would like to think we would be better off, but it's just wishful thinking. It's a good question though!
- Michael Fidler
I thought of Star Trek when I read this, too :)
- WorldofHiglet
Star Trek is a good example but as I mentioned above I don't want a "captain" either :)
- Bindu Reddy
It's an interesting and useful train of thought. One way of approaching it is to realize that since you are proposing that work is voluntary, there is nothing really stopping you from starting now. What kind of services would you be willing to provide for free? Can you think of any services you want whose providers would be interested in accepting your services? And how do we approach...

It could be done ... one could use a "social points" scheme where you get plus for contribution, minus for bad social or environmental impact. Playing violent video games all day will eventually drain your points, boredom would set in, you'd have to figure out something else to do. Which may include learning to make video games -- i.e. re-direct a "harmful" habit. I'm not saying violent video games are harmful, just an example.

One analogy is Open Source software. Is it always better than commercial?

Money is simply an innocent tool for exchange. IMO it makes things easier. It represents (in most cases) the value one brings in through ones contributions/hard work.... It makes it easy for one to exchange the returns of contributions in one domain with the goods in another domain.... the price of which could be determined through free market demand & supply stuff.

Star Trek shows the military/science arm of the United Federation of Planets, Starfleet, but civilians in the Star Trek universe have all basic meets provided for, and are free to do whatever they feel is their life's work: the UFP is a republic, not a militocracy. The invention of technologies like the replicator are crucial to the lack of money. In many ways, Star Trek is the...

@bindu IMO the world is a better place when people do things that make them happy 'cos they contribute well in the process (which makes everyone gain from it) plus happy people typically make people around them happy as well. Given this logic, if helping out others makes one happy, one should do it ... not for the sake of others but for their own happiness and satisfaction. There's...

Bindu, sounds like Communism to me. I've talked to enough people who grew up in the USSR to know that that a 'moneyless' system where the state provides your basic needs is not a viable system. Humans are greedy, materialistic, power hungry and entrepreneurial. In an a extreme socialistic society like the USSR, 'money' or a barter system is created and a huge black market is formed to fill the void.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I'm pretty sure that a volunteer work force to provide the basic needs of all would not work if there is no benefit for those who actually work vs those who are lazy and don't. The easy way out would be to not participate and reap the benefits of the suckers who did work. Some entrepreneurial folks, would sponge off the system and spend their time creating wealth for themselves in the black market. Neither activity would benefit society.
- Jeff P. Henderson
This post made me wonder how many plumbers there are and how many people there are who would volunteer to be plumbers. Why plumbers? I don't know; that's just the first thing that came to mind, maybe because I was reading about Mario & Luigi earlier.
- Amit Patel
hmm, everyone who is a plumber could have been something else, so why are there any plumbers now?
- SuezanneC Baskerville
Bindu, I asked this question a while back - yes I think it would be a better place. :-) Money is one of the main evils of this World.
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol, money is just a tool, greed and power are the main evils of the world. Removing the exchange mechanism won't change this.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I highly doubt removing money would make any difference. People would just move to other forms of currency and barter and trade.
- Itachi
Money is actually a cleaner form of exchange. Other forms will be much more complicated. We need to note that we evolved from the other systems to what we have today. People who have issues with money will also typically have issues with other forms of exchange
- Vipul Rawat
Money is pretty innocuous. Banking (specifically lending) can have some pretty serious issues however. When banks can create money out of nothing through leverage with minimal restriction, they end up with a great deal of power over the value of money. When this happens the value of money becomes disconnected from the value of goods and services. The history of banking in the united...

Anyone interested in the theory of communes should read http://bit.ly/7FHQLM , "Monetary Theory and the Great Capitol Hill Baby-Sitting Co-op Crisis," by Sweeney and Sweeney. It seems that people need incentives to cooperate.
- Daniel Dulitz
Jeff - Communism was all about the state dictating stuff and spending all their time and money and things that were not useful to society. While I agree money is a tool. It is also part of the reason you are greedy. IF resources are plentiful and there is nothing to be greedy over.. Maybe there will be a lot less greed in the society.
- Bindu Reddy
Agreed, if everyone has all of their material needs taken care of in the best possible way at no cost to themselves, and there are no shortages of any resources to contend with, then their is no need for money.
- Alex Scrivener
Seems like it would be hard for your startup company to get funded. ;)

@Bindu - greed will always be there - not for the resources/money in your scenario, but for other stuff like one's social image/status, etc. Society will always value one thing or the other and people will get greedy about it. - Bindu Reddy
@Hayes: Somalia is an interesting situation. There is money, but there is no one "Somalia", because different states exist where the one once was. Somaliland has its own currency, as does Puntland, Maakhir, and others. But foreign currencies are used heavily as well. The Somali diaspora sends money back home to families and keep many of them solvent as well.

I think even without thing such as money, we would find something else to direct our greed. Greed is necessary for progress but too much greed is the problem.

I know there are other forms of non-monetary systems, but I'm going back to Star Trek because it's most familiar: in it, money isn't replaced by another monetary unit. There are no credits, dollar primes, or other things by which all things' values are pegged. Instead, basic resources are so trivial to produce that even if there were a capitalist economy, they'd be worthless. So, a...

Which comes to the problem people identify with money: it encourages hoarding. If you consume less than you need (or receive more than you need), you can save more, which means things become more scarce, which makes that which you saved worth more. The argument is that money (and subsequently capitalism), in many ways, is antithetical to the continued success of a society.

Well, I been thinking about it at the back of my head today, & a couple of things: 1. find some decent keywords, put up a blog, & either sell them on the back of a free teaser or they (or 1 or 2 of them) could be the free teaser to get them into your blog. Depends how valuable you think they are: you could give away one or 2 & charge for the others (I've been making notes on one of Eben Pagan's homestudy seminars today http://tinyurl.com/qk4nfx
- Isha (Marysia)
Pagan's video is v good by the way, & if you've not seen it could give you some ideas that would answer your question. 2. Find someone whose blog/site gets good visitor numbers in a related (but not competing) area & ask to do a post or an offer on their blog, & you'd tell the readers that they can get the tutorials on your blog.
- Isha (Marysia)
What we don't know is how long they are, what you think they're worth, what your intention was behind making them etc. So not sure if either of those suggestions actually fit your reality?
- Isha (Marysia)
3. Hunt around the internet finding out who & where are crying out for just that sort of tutorial. I'm reminded of the mantra of the 30dc, something about not having the product before doing the market research. 4. If you think they're good (you might like to verify that by getting someone to go through them) then perhaps Clickbank?
- Isha (Marysia)
Some good suggestions there, along the lines of what I'm grasping towards. I'm not sure what these kind of tutorials might be worth so I'm going to have to test it somehow. Keyword research has been underway but the specific niche is untested. I think I need to write a step by step plan now. Meanwhile, thanks for the ideas and I'll send you the plan and videos if you like.

last.fm is still my favorite. but i use blip.fm and hypem.com as well and scrobble to last.fm. in fact i use anything that will scrobble to last.fm.
- Lynne d Johnson
ok, who actually uses this? And can you please explain how it actually works...Do you have to type in what you're actually listening to??
- Zee.
Zee - I use blip nearly every day. It's awesome. It integrates seeqpod (I think) and you "blip" (like tweet) songs with a little message too. The interface lets you listen to all tracks in a similar way to favtape.
- Matt Harwood
Last.fm is my favorite for keeping track of my friends' listening habits, music discovery and listening to internet radio, but I love blip.fm for giving me a way to tweet and ff out what i'm listening to and to instantly hear what my friends are listening to.
- Mattie Kenny
Last.fm tracks my listening habits. blip.fm allows me to pull up any song I'm thinking of and post it somewhere. You can also create a playlist. And it all (for the most part) can be made part of your last.fm stats via the aforementioned scrobbling functions.
- Helen Sventitsky
before blip.fm i used twittytunes (i still use it), it's a firefox addon. while i'm listening to itunes and scrobbling to last.fm, i can send a tweet of what i'm listening to with twittytunes. i think bc of this blip.fm hasn't wowed me yet, other than being able to listen to friends' playlists.
- Lynne d Johnson
Lynne - I used to use twittytunes but then when I upgraded my FF, the plugin didn't work anymore and I never bothered to add it. You bring up a very good point.
- Mattie Kenny
I like Blip, but haven't been as active on it as I used to be. I would lose followers whenever I blipped more than 3 times in a day. They need to beef up their selection. You used to be able to add your own stuff easily, but there are restrictions now.
- Bryan R. Adams
Have to say that Twisten.fm works a bit better in some aspects.
- "Jazzperous" Isaksson
Could you elaborate Jeppe? Blip is just a search engine. None of the music resides on their servers, it just streams MP3 it finds on the net. Some (many?) of those servers are not very reliable.

In Market Samurai Settings for Google, there's a drop down menu for selecting a region or else "All countries and territories". I initially set this to UK. After testing with several keywords with which I'm familiar, the results - particularly in the new competition analysis module - don't match those from a google UK search at all. Then I found that changing the setting made no difference at all. Checking against a Google.com search is closer, but after one particular search I became convinced that Samurai is working not only on google.com results but also using &GL=US to specifically retrieve results geared towards the US.
- Andy Roberts
So maybe this is a complicated problem relating to IP ranges, caching and other factors or maybe the software has the interface built in for selecting local searches but this hasn't been programmed and activated yet. Maybe it will be fixed for local searches before the 30Day challenge and trial period expire, but the way it looks to me now I have three options.
- Andy Roberts
1) Go through the 30DC using a US orientated phrase, and then apply what I've learned from that process to a new, different UK orientated phrase beginning all over again after September. That's what I ended up doing last year.
- Andy Roberts
2) Do the keyword research manually using Google trends, keyword external tool, wordtracker free keywords, Microsoft commercial intent tool, etc
- Andy Roberts
3) Ty to find a phrase that's likely to work well in *both* markets and see how much traffic I can get from both US and UK sources. If both turn out to be viable they might each end up being monetised differently.
- Andy Roberts
Andy, Have you raised this with the Samurai guys? I have had good and quick feedback from them on a variety of issues. Which of the three options have you decided to pursue?
- Walter van Straaten
Andy, You are not the only person having this problem as the Samurai Support Forum shows.
- Walter van Straaten
Yep, there are UK market issues with both keyword generation and the google ranking aspect, which is to say it's not working for either and the MS guys know already. I think we might have to accept that the challenge is very US centric in it's approach and the other aspects will be too. If MS does include the website/domain creation aspects Ed hints at in the ustream video than these too will be US based I think.
- Linda
I am equally frustrated, though it forces me to practice the manual method for researching a specific UK niche.
- thefluffanutta
The thing is, even when i first started and was targeting UK on my sites, I found that 70%+ of my traffic was coming from the US.
- Frann Leach
Interesting Fran, maybe it's niche specific. Mine are currently 80 +% UK traffic.
- Linda
I've been using the Market Samurai this morning as a refined suggestion tool for coming up with potential phrases within a broad area, then cross checking some of those that survive the filters against the manual method. This has thrown up 4 ideas so far, none of which is really all that promising, so I feel I need to generate a few more yet before I start thowing them all away!
