"In Round One, Chuck D. takes on KRS-One, and Ice Cube is matched up against Fresh Prince. Both Chuck D. and KRS are said to be at the top of any lyricism list. That will be a close call. With Ice Cube and Fresh Prince you have a west coast, former N.W.A. member versus the fun “Parents Just Don’t Understand” creator. We’re not even sure if that’s a fair match up. How will you decide between LL Cool J vs. Rakim? And, of course, we couldn’t leave out the women of hip-hop with Queen Latifah vs. MC Lyte."

I remember sitting in Lisa (from Picnik) and Avner's panel at Web 2.0 in NYC in 2009. I had no idea who she was, but by the way the crowd reacted, she was definitely a draw.

Guess what, everyone? I'm pregnant! Obviously, I've known about it for a while... I'm due in July. I was kind of waiting until I got big enough to take a picture so no one could be like "pics or it didn't happen" (not that anyone would really do that :P). We're not finding out the gender in advance. I'm feeling good :)
There probably won't be too many more "bump" photos posted publicly... I'm personally a little squeamish about them (for myself, at least). But there will be updates when baby gets here, of course :)

"Many young children from low-income families drink too much juice, new research shows. To fight childhood obesity and tooth decay, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children aged 6 and under consume only one serving of juice -- even 100 percent fruit juice -- each day. In the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, however, it was found that about 50 percent of kids in low-income families drink twice that amount. The poll asked parents of all income levels how much juice their children consumed each day. Overall, 35 percent of parents reported their children between the ages of 1 and 5 years old drank two or more cups of juice on any given day. Nearly half of the parents with household incomes less than $30,000 per year said their children drank two or more cups of juice daily. In contrast, just 23 percent of parents with household incomes of $100,000 or more reported their children drank that much juice."

I'm dubious. I live in a lower income area. I see 2yos given a can of Coke at 7am. But these same parents will say that they rarely give their kids soda. Yeah, right. Besides, juice is expensive. I passed up buying juice today because it's just too much money right now. I even make my kids severely dilute their juice.
- Anika
Apple juice can be pretty cheap. Some parents keep their kid's bottles continuously filled with it. I've seen 12 month olds who need fillings. It's pretty sad. But now that I think about it, I think WIC does pay for fruit juice.

Apple cocktail is cheap. It's like $2. Apple juice is running about $4 right now. This is all for like a half a gallon. Maybe they are thinking of apple cocktail as juice.
- Anika
If by "juice" they mean Kool-Aid then yeah, this is true.
- Rahsheen?
I haven't done the math, but buying a $2 gallon of juice just doesn't seem worth it when you can make a gallon of juice using a little sugar, a packet of "flavoring" and water.
- Rahsheen?
Real juice or mock-juice, it's the liquid sugar intake quantity/frequency that's problematic, right.
- Micah
I give my kids more milk than juice and I water down the juice--even orange juice which is a favorite.

WIC gives you TONS of fruit juice. It's ridiculous.

What's the alternative? Juice was supposed to be better than soda, but I guess that's not the case. So what's left, water?

It's been weeks since my kids have had juice. Ever since I found out how orange juice is mass-produced, I've been even more down on juice. Home made or nothing. Milk or water. Rarely horchata or chocolate milk as a special treat.

I drink juice nearly every day, probably 2 servings worth too. I feel like with all this doom and gloom about it I'm destine to one day literally just implode/combust/liquefy.
- Heather
It's just like with anything else, really. It's not that you should never drink it. (Apple, pear, and prune juice are excellent for keeping you regular, for one thing.) You just shouldn't drink half a gallon or more every day.
- Victor Ganata
What's tap water like over there? Do people normally have to filter it, or buy it? Would that make juice cheaper than water?
- Headless Gnad Kicker
Tap water varies from district to district, Melly. Some places have bad tasting water, some excellent, some have water that is toxic due to industrial pollution (Erin Brockovitch-type stuff). I have been lucky enough to live places where the tap water taste is good to excellent. I visited Austin and if I lived there, I'd probably filter daily because it doesn't taste very good.
- Spidra Webster
We have delicious tap water here in Oakland :) I got WIC for awhile,& yeah they give way too much juice, I'd give almost all away because I never gave Jayden much juice at all....he asks for water more than anything else, thank goodness. And I know children who probably consume a quart of juice drinks a day, whose parents think they're giving them something good :(

For infants/toddlers, I can definitely see this as an issue. Whenever we gave Alexis juice when she was little, we'd water it down quite a bit (sometimes 50/50, sometimes 25% juice & 75% water) for a few reasons (one of which is that a lot of juices can cause diarrhea in infants/toddlers). There's just as much sugar in milk as there is in real juice, though; so you really are left with...

I've seen kids who can finish multiple gallons a day, though. From a nutritional standpoint, all-you-can-drink just seems like a bad idea.

Wifey sees lots of kids with bad dental issues. She saw a dude pour soda in his baby's sippy cup once. At the Dentist office! And he wondered why the couple of teeth the poor kid had were already rotten.

Josiah has a juice box in his lunch every day but doesn't always drink it. He's not allowed more than one juice a day when he does have it. His favourite drink is water with ice. He hates soda because he says the bubbles "hurt his feelings". Won't drink flavoured milk either, just plain. Sometimes having a fussy kid is good ;o)
- Headless Gnad Kicker
We were broker than broke times when I was a kid. We had juice drinks from time to time but Mom mostly gave us water. I'm thankful for that. It's still my preferred choice of beverage all these years later.

My brother's not even super smart. But he did hit a dude in the head with a brick for calling him a retard. After he did it, he looked down and said, "Actually, I'm autistic." *drops mic*

A friend from HS has 2 autistic kids, 9 and 12 (I think.) The younger is a boy and he'll make an insanely great drummer - he has a perfect sense of timing no matter what signature, and has already gotten in trouble for correcting his band director at school. The older is a girl and I don't know of any "special powers", but she's one of the funniest kids I've ever met, which is good because it keeps her out of trouble with Mom. :) Both really great kids.

My brother's special power was hogging the TV and not letting his little brother watch anything.

It was a learning experience with Nancy's kids - first autistic people I had ever really gotten to know. I noticed that Nick needs that constant sensory input too.

The super smart thing actually causes some problems for him at school. Super smart, no filter, and little patience for kids who are actually at grade level can cause some tension.

My nephew can't do any of that TV/movie stuff, but if you load some movies on an iPod Touch for him, he knows how to delete them. Especially Toy Story, which he loves.
