This is epic: "Supporting IE 6 means slower progress, less progress, and, in some places, no progress."! - Winston Teo
we need the bigger boys to adopt this kind of attitude. then we'll all have less dev_pain - Redha
actually this could be the start of the kill_IE6_use movement in itself. and if there is/was one, where do we sign up? i think it should be our responsibility as site owners to accelerate the death of IE6 usage, it's a win-win situation (for us and for our users). what do u guys think? - Redha
Twitter needs to add a mass delete button for Scoble. - Mike Fruchter
I don't think twitter wants anything else that lets Scoble do things in mass - Stefan Hayden
I'm thinking of hiring a virtual assistant just to answer all my socnet & email msgs, & sort out only the ones I really need to answer myself. Seriously, no time to do it all & do my own actual work. I may even have the V.A. poke people back on FB!;-) - Cathryn Hrudicka
LOL @ Cathryn's response! OK I need one too!! How the hell does Robert keep up with all this *noisy* stuff anyway? - Susan Beebe
@directeur I totally agree with you on that one. If someone is serious about contacting me, then they should send an email. That way I can actually respond in more than 140 characters. The character limit is fine for posting to Twitter, is sucks for real communication. Also, Robert is right, often the FailWhale prevents you from even responding to a DM. - Scott Beale
That's hilarious. I tried doing that on my voicemail message and the telemarketers don't seem to care. - Clay Newton
So, regarding the direct message fail whale -- a simple app that uses the API to delete direct messages would be perfect, no? - J. Phil
$199 for an iPhone? Wow, even us bloggers can afford one now =D - John Tyra
sorry scobleizer! we'll have to wait until july 11. you, on the other hand, might have some pull to get a pre-release. - John T Brady
i need to view the commercial just once more. it hasn't quite been drilled into my head. - Cee Bee
think I'm going iPhone July 11th... - Wade Dorrell
$200 3G iphone -- say goodbye to all of the other blackberry competitors. Now, if the camera didn't suck, I might buy one. Apple should team up with SE for the ultimate all-in-one. - xero

While Parallels 3.0's DirectX support was a complete disappointment, Fusion 2.0 appears to be getting decent, DirectX 9 with Shader 2.0 support. Sounds like gaming with titles from this century might be a possibility. - Lisa McMillan
Eric Meyer: "We are often faced with problems that have multiple solutions, none of them perfect. To understand what makes each solution imperfect and to know which of them is the best choice in the situation—that’s knowing your craft." - Wilson Miner
“Friendfeed request: If you're going to reply back on Twitter, it'd be helpful to get a "live" character count so you don't hit 140 characters without knowing it.”
ustream works better in dark africa :-) ...via AlertThingy - Kim White
uStream may also be good for the IRC chat feature. I know IRC is already used for the TechGuy live show. ...via AlertThingy - Rolf Schewe
I find stickam to be more about video conversations around live content where as ustream is more on the pure video streaming side of things ...via twhirl - Dave Senior
I thought FriendFeed was going to buy Google. - Amit Patel
How does this mesh with google's business model? ...via AlertThingy - Shawn Smith
Google can buy what they want to get them at the top. Can they buy the whole Internet? - Jack

It's too bad Google has basically stopped innovating and just started bying stuff. Appengine is the pits and they haven't doen much else. ...via twhirl - Soulhuntre
friendfeed is already a spinoff of google ... what would he do with Jaiku ? and you forgot bambuser qwich integrates gmaps .. ...via AlertThingy - Frédérick 2 Baro
@Jack I am sure they will give it a good try, although they will see it more like shaping the internet! ...via AlertThingy - Joe Dawson
Soulhuntre, in a way i do agree with you, but i don't think that Google has deserted innovation, there's so many development projects running there. I think all this acquisition issue is a matter of economic calculations, instead of holding a special team to develop something for several years they just purchase a company that has already spent the time on R&D and created the product. - Nir Ben Yona
Maybe Google is jsut over-extended. They sat on Jot for years, then ruined it. They haven't done much with Gmail and search is stagnant for them. All they do to generate interest of late is spend money. ...via twhirl - Soulhuntre

i'm hoping google leverages GrandCentral into the Android platform. that service is too convenient to be left on the back burner. - Matt Musgrave
friendfeed looks like a google service, acts like a google service, is built by xGooglers and is a perfect fit for Google. I agree and would love to see it happen. my only question, why didn't the team build this at Google? - timepilot
@timepilot, I wondered the same thing at first. But apart from the possible entrepreneurial benefits, I'm guessing the freedom of development. They now have complete freedom around where they want to take it without the limitations of a large corporate agenda. - Phil Ashman
What would Google do with Twitter after the damage they did to Jaiku and Dodgeball? ...via AlertThingy - Jane Quigley
The difference between Jaiku and FriendFeed is that Jaiku wasn't funded and its founders weren't rich. They sold to Google to collect their bucks, and it was the right decision for them. FriendFeed doesn't need to sell out. So unless Google offers really a lot of money, there's no reason to sell unless Google has plans for FriendFeed. Which I doubt - if they had plans, they'd just developed it on their own. ;) - sebmos
@jane: What damage did Google do to Jaiku? ...via AlertThingy - Niclas Strandh
"It's not the same because I'm not telling you to remove it. I'm simply
trying to make you aware of one of the possible consequences to putting your
stuff on the internet.
How is it not for the taking? You can't put your content on lockdown and the
only way to really do anything remotely close to that is to protect your
entries with privacy features such as requiring a password. Even then, you
have to give someone the code and in doing so, you're opening your stuff to
the limitless possibility of being taken. Just by putting your stuff on the
internet you're doing that. Ergo, whether you want it to be or not, it's
there for the taking. Or let me rephrase that last part:* It's open to the
POSSIBILITY of being taken.*" - Corvida
@felix: It doesn't appear to be hiding the stuff I have configured on the site. And the semi-transparency is driving me batty - can we get a setting for that? - Voyagerfan5761
@Voyagerfan5761 yeah, I'm with you on that. I wish it had a more twhirl like configurability on a few fronts. More generically, I wish that AIR was a better desktop citizen with more OS appropriate chrome. AlertThingy next to Twhirl sort of highlights the wild west of AIR apps. - felix
Thanks for all the comments! keep them coming, although remember this is just a v1.0! - Jeremy Baines

@Jeremy: Don't know about Jared, but I hit save, restarted the app, sounds kept going, so I selected, saved, unselected and saved. Still getting sounds. - Cyvros/fyc
OK thanks, will look at that one. Apart from a few glitches, I hope some of you are enjoying the app :) (via Alert Thingy) - Jeremy Baines
I was frustrated with Friendfeed because it screamed for a twhril style interface. This looks really promising. (via Alert Thingy) - Michael Groner
Wow, that really looks awesome. (via Alert Thingy) - Martin Gommel
For the sounds to stop, turn them off, save and then restart AlertThingy. After that they stopped for me. (via Alert Thingy) - Ryan
Cesar, you can't post to twitter from Alert thingy (yet). I imagine Twhirl is going to add FriendFeed in the future. I'll be watching that one with close interest. - Bwana McCall
Jeremy, nice version 1. Do you plan on integrating with Twitter as well directly? Output as tweet? The future is like a search engine choice, send a tweet, jaiku, friendfeed or what have you. (via Alert Thingy) - Jason
Its a good start but the transparency needs to be worked out and the ability to hide things like twitter (seeing as how I get double posts for tweets via twhirl and alertthingy, still need twhirl not all of my twitter friends use friendfeed atm) - BCK
Gotta say that if twhirl would let me switch channels between ff and twitter, its big lead in features would lock alert thingy out for quite a while. - Janet Tokerud
Runs very high CPU, around %10 on my MacBook Air. Its not normal. (via Alert Thingy) - Ahmet Oren
neat v1.0. can do with some more configuration options though. useful. (via Alert Thingy) - Rajiv
problem with alert thingy: if a FF notification occurs while you're typing in your comment. you lose your comment and must start over. very bad (via Alert Thingy) - Baratunde Thurston
It's great, just a couple of little issues, when I double-click on the system-tray icon it should restore the app (via Alert Thingy) - Glenn Slaven
And auto-linking urls in comments would be nice too - Glenn Slaven
Oh, and can the alert bubble please not steal focus? (via Alert Thingy) - Glenn Slaven
I, too, would love it if links were auto-linked. More config options on the interface would be lovely as well! Other than that I love it so far! (via Alert Thingy) - Bob
Air gets more and more useful. But both Thwirl and Alert Thingy NEEDS color settings. I find both of them a bitt annoying when it comes to colors... (via Alert Thingy) - Oyvind Solstad
This should boost my FF use exponentially, as twirl did my Twitter use. Agree that it should minimize to system tray, though, and get off the taskbar. (via Alert Thingy) - faithx5
If you click the close 'x' link it minimises to the system tray rather than the taskbar (via Alert Thingy) - Glenn Slaven
I wish the lower-right alerter alerted me more often. Refreshing FF proves to be much more "current". - Mike Reynolds

even though i unchecked the sound box, I'm still hearing it. And it just scared the sh*t outta me. (via Alert Thingy) - Andy Sternberg
I'm also getting sounds when I have the sound off. Just woke up the gf b/c the stupid preferences don't work :-/ (via Alert Thingy) - Bob
It's a good start. Hope it fix the font size issue soon. Maybe a different color theme will make it easier to read. Also, hope it could also display the poster's image from the profile (via Alert Thingy) - Joel Yen
This and Twhirl will most likely be always on my desktop. At what point do I start haveing a varienty of AIR apps vs one firefox session? (via Alert Thingy) - Monty

@Bob yes the sound problem should be fixed. Let me know if you have any more issues with it. ...via AlertThingy - Jeremy Baines
Some issues need to be worked out, like not dumping my comment while I am typing it when a new alert comes in. More configuration options needed. Also, some interaction with twitter such as sending a new tweet or replying would be nice. Not sure how the thwurl people would like that though. I am really liking it so far regardless of all that. (via Alert Thingy) - Rolf Schewe
I'm no longer having the sound problem so it looks like you fixed it ...via AlertThingy - Bob
For those discussing the frequency of the alerts, the only real-time tweet client I believe is Gtalk. (via Alert Thingy) - Rolf Schewe
