"Pints for Prostates is a grassroots effort to reach men with a critical message about prostate cancer screening using the universal language of beer. Started by prostate cancer survivor and drinks journalist Rick Lyke, the goal of the program is to communicate with men in a friendly and non-threatening way about the need for regular PSA testing." - l.m.orchard
"In November 2006, the team at CrunchTime Games Inc. had a massive task to accomplish: Successfully pitch Microsoft an Xbox LIVE Arcade game made by a handful of first time programmers and artists (some of which were still students), with only one experienced pro leading the way from his converted garage in Chandler Arizona. Outside The Studio On September 3, 2008, Shred Nebula will launch on Xbox LIVE Arcade servers, completing that goal and dream of the men and women that dared to take on such a wildcard challenge. "In a lot of ways I see Ubiquity as being a solid replacement for Greasemonkey and bookmarklets. It's far simpler and will make their execution much more flexible. I'll be curious to see what people end up doing with it, in the upcoming months." - l.m.orchard
You know what? I really wish the media would just say "these are lies" rather than dance around euphemisms like "stretched truth" or whatnot. "Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her Republican supporters held back little Wednesday as they issued dismissive attacks on Barack Obama and flattering praise on her credentials to be vice president. In some cases, the reproach and the praise stretched the truth." - l.m.orchard
"His plea deal: 120 days in jail, $1M restitution ... Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who will lose his job because he lied while under oath at a police whistle-blower trial, has just pledged to tell the truth as he prepares to admit his guilt as part of a plea deal he just struck with the Wayne County Prosecutor." - l.m.orchard
"Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's tenure as mayor of Detroit is over. He just entered into a plea agreement, according to prosecutor Lisa Lindsey." - l.m.orchard
"It's always felt to me like they didn't quite "get it" when it comes to blending into the platform and learning to be a "good citizen" on the user's platform of choice. Today, it's clear to me why I've felt this way: Google isn't interested at all in "being a citizen" or part of a platform, they are interested in being the platform. If you look at the way Chrome is designed, it's not so much designed to be a good browser, as much as it is a good operating system for web applications." - l.m.orchard
"No more secret handshakes, no more private invites; we’re proud to open the doors to Raptr and share the service in an open public beta! ... Raptr was born out of a stellar team of people who are passionate about playing and discovering games. ... In every case, each game or system seemed to require a separate login before we could even begin to see whether our friends were playing. There was no single place to go to see what your friends were playing - until now. ... Know when your friends are playing ... See how your friends are doing in their games ... Discover new games you might like ... One thing we think is pretty cool about Raptr is that we intelligently recommend games to you that you didn’t even know existed or that you didn’t even know were out yet." - l.m.orchard
"Of course, the huge design choice that isn't explained, the giant in the room, if you will, shows up in this illustration from the comic: ... I can't help but think that people will encounter some difficulties in using a browser that's taller than a man. The Fitts' Law hit alone seems worth a bit of rethinking on Google's part, at least without a lot of stretching." - l.m.orchard
"Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden said yesterday that he and running mate Barack Obama could pursue criminal charges against the Bush administration if they are elected in November. Biden's comments, first reported by ABC news, attracted little notice on a day dominated by the drama surrounding his Republican counterpart, Alaska governor Sarah Palin. But his statements represent the Democrats' strongest vow so far this year to investigate alleged misdeeds committed during the Bush years." - l.m.orchard
"Here's a lazyweb idea for publishers: I often blog books here and when I do, I like to put up a picture of the cover. ... So here's the idea: publishers should create default directories called "covers" at their server-root (e.g., tor.com/covers, harpercollins.co.uk/covers, etc) filled with high-rez PNGs or JPGs (or both) named after the book's ISBN -- for Neil Gaiman's Graveyard Book, it would be http://harpercollins.co.uk/006.... Tweak your robots.txt file to make sure the search-engines all crawl these directories, so when you search on images.google.com or images.yahoo.com for an ISBN, the publisher's high-rez would be right there at the top." - l.m.orchard
"So far the idea is just a dream but I think that with enough support and hard work Bar Camp Detroit can be a truly awesome community run event." - l.m.orchard
"Chrome is the end of the browser and the beginning of the Cloud Client. These are quite different things. A Cloud Client is a flexible and configurable Interface in which an application can run. Whether the rest of the application is local or lives in the cloud is an option - and switchable. The user may not even know nor care. It doesn’t sound much like a browser does it?" - l.m.orchard
"a Firefox Extension called “Ambient News”, and its goal is to provide the user with zero-cost news about the sites that they visit frequently. The extension requires no configuration; you just install it and see if it helps you out." - l.m.orchard
It'll never be as cool as enlightenment ;) - Dave Dash
Strangely enough, versions of enlightenment in the early 90's are what got me to install my first Linux box. Yet, these days, I tend to never hook monitors up to my Linux boxes. :) - l.m.orchard
"It occurred to us (Atul in specific) that it wouldn't be hard to allow Ubiquity scripts to wrap existing GreaseMonkey scripts. That way, you could simply subscribe to GM scripts with Ubiquity -- no more annoying and funky UI. What do y'all think? Would someone be interested in whipping this up? " - l.m.orchard
"The legendary movie voice guy known as Don LaFontaine passed away on Monday at the age of 68. Entertainment Tonight is reporting that LaFontaine passed away of complications from Pneumothorax, a condition that is the result of a collapsed lung. Why am I writing this tribute to Don? Because even though you might not know it, Don is the voice that you recognize from nearly every last movie trailer and every last movie voiceover. He's got that deep, thrilling voice that you'll instantly recognize the moment you hear it. He may never have been seen in any actual movies, but to me, he has been and always will be the voice of movies and movie trailers. Don and his voice will most certainly never be forgotten." - l.m.orchard
"Are we running out of oil? The question seems silly. "Yes" is the obvious answer. Or is it? That there is less oil in the ground today than there was yesterday is true. That there was less oil in the ground yesterday than there was in 1870 is also true. But "running out of oil" is not as much a question of physics as it is one of economics. And economics assures us that we will never run out of oil." So I guess this guy is saying oil will get horrendously expensive before it physically runs out. Isn't that, umm, pretty f'ing horrible too? - l.m.orchard
"I finally got around to porting the freely available DOOM source code to the Intellivision. I will be posting the source code for the Intellivision version soon. The ROM image, weighing in at 32K words, is probably the largest cartridge ROM image out there. So for now, enjoy these screen shots and the game binary below! " - l.m.orchard
After a decade at the final frontier, Star Trek: The Experience is going where no Las Vegas Strip attraction wants to go. Trek Star Trek: The Experience entertained visitors for 10 years. With a decommissioning ceremony -- as befits any great vessel -- the exhibit and its replica of the starship Enterprise are closing Monday. - l.m.orchard
"feed2omb is a simple tool that takes input from Atom or RSS feeds and posts updates to the open microblogging service of your choice. It should also (though I’m not going to try it) quite happily post to Twitter. " - l.m.orchard
"I have just created a new Firefox Ubiquity plugin command named “fyi”. The command makes it super simple to email info about a web page to anyone. I wrote the command because I am often finding myself forwarding URLs to friends and co-workers. This is normally much more tedious than it needs to be" - l.m.orchard
"So even in a more competitive environment than ever, I’m very optimistic about the future of Mozilla and the future of the open Web." John Lilly is the CEO of Mozilla. - l.m.orchard
"Last Tuesday, the community working on Ubiquity was five people. Half of us had never met face-to-face, we spanned three continents, and had written a couple dozen commands. Today, our community is thousands strong with contributes in every time zone. Innovation is pouring in from all directions—we’ve had thousands of commands written for Ubiquity; commands that fundamentally enhance the functionality of the browser. In under a week, we have a roughly comparable number of Ubiquity commands as there are Firefox extensions. That’s an amazing achievement. It highlights the power of enabling innovation edges and empowering such a generative community. Wow. Simply wow. And thank you, everyone in the community. We all deserve a giant glass of champagne." - l.m.orchard
"To wit: all 8 episodes of the mid 1980's, 'gone faster than Firefly' science fiction show, Otherworld. If you don't know the show, and I have a very, very vague remembrance of seeing parts of the the first one, here is the opening blurb from Wikipedia: Otherworld was a short-lived science fiction TV series that aired for only eight episodes in 1985 on CBS. It was created by Roderick Taylor as a sort of Lost in Space on Earth." - l.m.orchard
"You should now have an operational laconica instance using the default template. The webserver is apache2. Jabber provided by ejabberd and electronic mail courtesy of sendmail. There is also a script provided that will back up your database to s3." - l.m.orchard
