@Mathew 1UP yeaaaaaahhhhh yet another browser! Only till one can compare to firefox...

I meant the UI doesn't feel right. I don't know what exactly ticks me off. It's a feeling. But like I said, maybe it's just me.

Shawn what's your problem today? If you don't have anything nice to say STFU. @Mathew - actually w/out extensions wouldn't Chrome be like WebKit? I wonder how they differ.

im currently using chrome on pc but havent completely switched from firefox yet. as soon as chrome gets extensions. i'll probably leave firefox behind :'-(

I guess it's the slanted tabs. OS X has only rounded rectangles. Those slanted tabs stand out like a sore thumb in OS X.
- vijay
The only thing that keeps me from ditching Firefox and running Chrome in VMware Fusion is the fact that Chrome doesn't have extensions yet. Overall Chrome is the best browser out there and really only needs a couple more things to take the number one spot.

I don't really care what it looks like, I'm just excited to see if Chrome really handles separate instances better than Firefox or WebKit...

It's a start, anyway. +1 for the Sad Tab

Firewire? On a notebook? I don't think so... though for the price Sony's charging, there should be one LOL

OH! I know what that is, it's the memory card (stick?) slot - or whatever that proprietary Sony things are called. Yup, I was right: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp...

Aside from it weighing less than my friend's Yorkie, that's the only reason why I want it so much - a netbook (notebook?) with innards that can actually run VIsta (...eventually Windows 7)

Only things that put me off are the 4" high screen and that clunky LAN/external monitor adapter.

Would you pay extra for a magnetic wireless adapter?

Looks like you need a magnifying glass to read text within a web site. FAIL!

But it runs the REAL version of VIsta WIN!

Mona, I get really really tired of companies like Sony and their SACD wars and memory "Stick 'em up" s. I'll tell you where they can "stick" it :) Disclosure: they are a client of a client. But the "packaging" dept. isn't going to find me out I think :)

Historicaltweets.com takes us on a journey through time to see Twitter posts from historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Michael Jordan. There are categories for 1800's, various decades of the 1900's, and even Comically Old when the word "Twitter" would have fit nicely in iambic pentameter. You can submit your own ideas, choose to view a random tweet, and will soon be able to buy merchandise which I'm sure will be decorated with popular historical tweets. This site has earned a distinguished spot in my feed reader so that I'm able to keep up with the tweets I missed from back in the day. [via Download Squad http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009...]

Mike, they killed JPG mag when they decided to move away from the community-based publication that it was. Just at the point where it was getting traction they pushed out the creators and tried to create some kind of weird high-art mag. I'm just glad they killed it at the same time my subscription ran out.
- Karoli
Yeah, I have to agree with you. The separation with the original founders was pretty nasty and it seems like the publication lost some of its soul when that happened. Looking back, maybe that was the beginning of the end.
- Mike Doeff
I think it's incredibly stupid when forums try censorship. Especially over something as stupid as writing an "anti-Canon" post. I'm glad that I've yet to see any serious instance of censorship on FriendFeed and hope that FF stays censorship free in 2009.
- Thomas Hawk
Completely agree with Thomas Hawk, it makes no sense and quite frankly being part of a forum like that is only bad for its participants
- Dean Blithe
That's abhorrent. I am a big Canon fan myself but even I will admit that they need a kick up the arse at the moment - and one of the best methods of communicating this is across forums such as this. On a side note, just for a second there I thought that this was about Digital Photography Review and not Digital Picture, and nearly wept. Phew.
- Luke Robinson
+1 Thomas...so true...couldn't agree more!

Wow. Thats nice. We have an SD500 (3.5 years old now), the improvement since then is amazing.
- DGentry
And the pricing is so low. So for people who are interested in photography but don't / can't afford it (like me!), this camera seems like a good choice, no?
- Mona Nomura
I had the Canon S400 and Canon SD630. The S400 ended up getting a memory card write error, the SD630 battery failed within 2 years. No more Canons for me.
- Roshan Vyas
Seriuosly, Ro? I've only had Canons and the only issues are the yellowish "Canon tint" (I made that up). All my cameras work extremely well (no matter how many times I drop them lol)

I had a S400 and it made some very nice pictures (http://bit.ly/14f1j), unfortunately it had dust/hair on the sensor resulting in a noticeable line in every picture. Subsequently, I got a IXY 900IS (SD800IS equiv, Japanese model) and that has worked nicely so far.

had a great time tonight shooting industrial stuff near Long Beach with David Sommars. Unfortunately we ended up being hassled while shooting three times. Including having the Long Beach Harbor police run background checks on us and telling us that we were not allowed to shoot from a perfectly legal public sidewalk.
I've read quite a few stories about photographers being hassled in Long Beach. Bummer. Get any shots of the officers?
- Jeremy Brooks
I got photos of the cops though which will be usefull for the blog post on the issue forthcoming.
- Thomas Hawk
Where you near Long Beach Harbor? Long Beach harbor is pretty well guarded since it is one of the largest ports in America. It's a security concern...too bad!
- Susan Beebe
I dunno, paparazzi they don't look to favorably on when you stalk celebrities...
- sofarsoShawn
Just kidding Hawk stick to the man!!!
- sofarsoShawn
Haha, as beautiful as the industrial stuff we were shooting was, I'm not sure i'd label it celebrity stalking.
- Thomas Hawk
Oh, and also finally shot the mona (museum of neon art) today as well. Highly recommended. Jeremy, you especially would have loved that place.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas, where is the MONA? I live in LA and have never heard of it. :(
- Derrick
I've got to get down to LA again soon. It's been way too long. I'm looking forward to seeing your shots from this trip.
- Jeremy Brooks
Downtown L.A. On 4th. If you like neon signs it's awesome.
- Thomas Hawk
Just curious, is the Mona sane with their photo policy? When a Dan Flavin show came to the MCA here in Chicago a few years ago, all photography was banned. Took a few dozen photos anyway, seemingly out of spite. I don't think neon sculptures would be too damaged by photography.
- Seth Anderson
Thanks...will check it out. Looking forward to seeing your work too.
- Derrick
The mona's photography policy is great. I probably shot 600 photos in the small museum over the course of an hour and a half. They were totally cool with it. A great place.
- Thomas Hawk
How long has the mona museum been around? 'never heard of it...hmmm

About to lose my iPhone signal, night all. Headed back up to Mrsth in the mountains with a few bottles of wine to say thanks for watching the four chicklets all day.
- Thomas Hawk
It's disturbing how many times in the last two months alone that someone has hassled/called the police simply because I wanted to take pictures from public property. Really, is disheartening.
- Brandon
Trebor, shooting industrial sites from a public sidewalk is neither illegal or renegade. You have your facts wrong in this one.
- Thomas Hawk
Can't wait for peopel to say enough is enough with overbearing gestapo like police power tripping.

Sebastian, I'm working on a blog post on this that I think I'll run with some photos later today. I've tried to contact the Long Beach Harbor Patrol but haven't had much success. I'm going to try and call them later today to get a more definitive statement on what authority they state to eject photographers from the port and once I hear back post more details on the incident.

"Still more daunting is the list of things Favreau can't think about as he writes the inaugural. He went for a run to the Lincoln Memorial last month and stopped in his tracks when he imagined the mall packed with 3 million people listening to some of his words. A few weeks later, Favreau winced when Obama spokesman Bill Burton reminded him: "Dude, what you're writing is going to be hung up in people's living rooms!" "If you start thinking about what's at stake, it can get paralyzing," Favreau said."
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
"One Saturday night in March, Obama called Favreau and said he wanted to immediately deliver a speech about race. He dictated his unscripted thoughts to Favreau over the phone for 30 minutes -- "It would have been a great speech right then," Favreau said -- and then asked him to clean it up and write a draft. Favreau put it together, and Obama spent two nights retooling before delivering the address in Philadelphia the following Tuesday."
- Kenny Stoltz
from twhirl
@ george tziralis Too young? If you write well, age is irrelevant.
- Phil Boiarski
Kevin, if he told the writer what to say and the writer just cleaned it up and edited it a bit, I don't think that detracts from his authorship.
- Paul Buchheit
Yah, book authors' editors contribute a lot to the final novel, but no one asks that their names be put on the cover.
- Bret Taylor
Speechwriters shouldn't grant interviews. Period. The words they write are not "theirs," as someone mentioned above, they are the words of the speaker. It's not appropriate for this guy to be welcoming any sort of media attention.
- Mary Trigiani
@Mary - agree - I'm totally jealous of the wunderkind, and am in awe of him. That said, he should stfu and focus and turn the attention back to his boss, lest he start thinking that his role is anything other than Obama's automatic typewriter. I've seen and heard way too much about him this year.
- Christopher Galtenberg
I have never heard of this guy before and liked reading the story. I don't see why they shouldn't write a story about him just because of his job.
- Gabe
I was a speechwriter, and the first thing you learn -- or should learn -- is that the words are not yours, they are those of the speaker. For me, it's a question of ethics. Had this problem when Peggy Noonan stepped forward, will always have this problem with these folks who use the limelight. Being a speechwriter, and people knowing it, was plenty enough for me. It distracts from the message and the speaker for the speechwriter to get attention. This is a professional code issue.
- Mary Trigiani
And by the way: the best speakers, like Obama, like Reagan, direct the content and the cadence of their speeches. They own them. They craft the speeches with the help of the speechwriter. It's not about the speechwriter, it's about the message of the speaker and the speaker himself/herself.
- Mary Trigiani
Thank you for the conversation on this. It's a real hot button with me. And I can tell you from having worked with good speakers that what you see up there on the podium is what they bring to it -- not their ability to read someone else's words. A good speechwriter writes in the voice of the speaker -- has that person's voice in his/her head while writing. Talking about it is a breach of confidentiality in my book.
- Mary Trigiani
Mary, are you saying that speech writers should not have stories written about them, or should they just pretend that they're not speech writers?
- Gabe
Stories about them are ok, just they're not to be part of the limelight. If they're too well known, it detracts from the story of a speech (who wrote this line, who wrote that line, ala Gerson of the current administration).
- Christopher Galtenberg
mary you offer a really interesting perspective, and i never thought of it that way! thanks.
- Neha Narula
I'm so glad I commented on this thread. The ensuing conversation has been the most interesting I've read all month!
- Kevin Fox
I definitely agree w/ Mary. I've also done some speechwriting, and you shouldn't reveal that you were the writer and/or talk about it. It's a contract you enter when you agree to be the behind-the-scenes writer.
- Ana
This is an interesting rule. Whom else does it apply to? Encyclopedia editors? Screen writers? People who voice over movies and TV shows in foreign languages?
- Gabe
Gabe: I'm saying that speechwriters should get enough of an ego rub from working with the speaker. A speechwriter should not do interviews. Spidra: Please read my comments above. An ethical speechwriter will tell you that the words come from the content created by the speaker -- the words could not have been written without the direction of the speaker to the speechwriter. At least, that's how I "wrote" speeches.
- Mary Trigiani
Gabe: Regarding your comment about encyclopedia editors, etc, apples and oranges. Speech writing is not ghostwriting; it is helping the speaker to organize and present personal thoughts. Encyclopedia writing is a form of reporting. Screen writing is under one's own name.
- Mary Trigiani
Gabe: I always told people what I did. Then I found, thanks to big-ego speechwriters and political speechwriting, that I had to explain I was not the brains of the content -- I was the brains of the presentation. The speaker created and shaped the content. When I was assigned to an exec that wanted it the other way, I quit.
- Mary Trigiani

being an outside observer to the mania, what i see is a very slick politician who was chosen by the rich and powerful as a more palatable "leader of the free world" - he pulled in more money than the other guy, and it wasn't from the little people.

This is just the beginning of the coming CC fallout. Increasingly, CC companies will ask customers to validate their creditworthiness for the credit the CC companies *have already granted them*.

He's not a boozy, sweaty party hound who gets caught on camera cheesing it up with pretty young girls (see: Mel Gibson, Bono); rather, he's more like a ghost in the night, who shows up out of nowhere, engages in utterly random conversations and then exits gracefully—leaving witnesses to wonder what the hell just happened. This is brilliant. Apparently Bill Murray has discovered that his fame allows him to walk in pretty much anywhere he wants and be accepted, even welcomed. What a strange world NYC would be if you didn't feel any social barriers and could just participate anywhere you found something interesting (or mundane). Then again, maybe fame isn't required, just a certain mindset.

I started a little email chain with a few NYC friends on Facebook and out of the 5 people I asked, 1 had heard that Bill Murray had rocked up to a Halloween party around the corner from her in Brooklyn (where his son lives, apparently), and another had a friend who was working on an archaeological dig in Cyprus where, randomly, Bill Murray rocked up and started pitching in with manual labour - carrying equipment back and forth - on and off for a couple of weeks.
