ASUS should be involved to stay involved in a new device direction. Like you said, they're nimble. Intel should get involved because of system on chip down from current IA, but they aren't there yet. Microsoft should get involved because of interest in products like Office being useful to people who use eReaders, let alone sharing expertise in areas. Open source should be involved because we need a standard to emerge so content sourcing stops being an issue. Don't ya just love emerging products?! I do!!!
- Lora Heiny
I like how we're at the point of features that formed Tablet PC & to a certain extent Pocket PC continue with the growing base of new devices. Your point about software being critical is so true. It's a good innovation challenge that eReaders are tackling. Something OEMs & ISVs can learn from.
- Lora Heiny
How about an "ultra-thin and light" mobile PC with multitouch and pen ;) I think those are all the codewords for today. hehe Oh wait, someone might understand better if use the 27+ yr old "laptop" as descriptor.
- Lora Heiny
I'm not sure. I have tested several and still come back to my Macbook. I will admit that my experience has turned me off on the whole Tablet PC thing, and I'm less likely to try to use them in the future.

I have three small "oil" stains on the shirt that I'm wearing. I have no idea how they got there and couldn't see them when I put on the shirt in the morning. I hate these kinds of stains.
I have 2-3 shirts that, each time we pull them out of the wash, they have similar little spots like that. The spots are almost always there but they move around and change size and shape. They are not there when the clothes go in and other clothes are not affected. We can't figure it out.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I hate when I get a shirt dry cleaned and it comes back with MORE stains than when I sent it!
- Rick Cogley
I hate those invisible stains that only show up in certain light. That certain light spectrum just happens to be the same as a camera flash, of course.
- Andrew Dobrow
Akiva, what detergent are you using and how are you putting it in with the clothes?
- joey
Yep, stain stick or Dawn dish detergent will get grease out.
- Lora Heiny
from iPhone
Yeah, I use Shout spray...only helps if you know the stains are there BEFORE you put it in the wash though

Do you remember kneeling in the bosses office this morning?
- Cristo
joey, this has happened with several different detergents. The only common thing is the brand of shirt. Oh, and for the record: start the water, wait a bit, add the detergent, and then the clothes. If I use a stain stick on the spots before they go into the wash, they'll be gone. But next time the shirt goes through the wash, new spots will appear.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I have a front loading HE washer, clothes go in same time as the detergent.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Weird. I've gotten those on a few shirts and thought maybe it was a detergent stain but I have no idea.
- joey
If it's oil, Dawn dish detergent works better than a stain stick. Put a glob of it on the oil spot, rub it around, and let it sit for 15 minutes or so before throwing it in the washer. Dawn has ingredients to break down oil whereas a stain stick doesn't.

[School meetings]: Today was the first set of back to school meetings. Approximately 20% of the teachers are new to the school. One administrative position was left unfilled. Several new staff members were hired to support attendance records, etc. Security shifted people over to maintenance to make sure no one lost hours.
Half the teachers received training on the new software for taking attendance and keeping grades. The grading scale doesn't work -- but -- oh well. Hopefully this will be fixed before school opens next week.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
OK - I'll bite. Why were there layoffs and now 20% new teachers?
- Lora Heiny
Several factors were involved. Reduction-In-Force (RIF) notices were sent to 10% of the district teachers (approximately 110). This included roughly 30% of our school teachers. As of Wednesday, all of the teachers at our school were hired back. But this didn't fill positions from people who quit, therefore, teachers from other schools were involuntarily transferred to the school (the...

This momentum allows redefining of PC: 1) just like the "Hi, I'm a Mac" separated Apple from PC despite its computers having the same hardware, media is pulling this future product closer to a PC and even using the term PC to describe it and 2) media are using "PC" to describe it when majority of the descriptions use larger iPod Touch as the basis. It seems that people are ready for a change and instead of an incremental change, people are excited about punctuated equilibrium (rapid origin of new species)
- Lora Heiny
The big unknown right now is will the Apple tablet be a tablet-macbook or a big ipod touch? I personally think it will be an ipod style device which is designed mostly for consuming media while being mobile. Video, photos, and web content (with music of course but a standard ipod would be a better choice for that) will be the primary material consumed on it but of course there will be...

William, Your description of an Apple "tablet" sounds plausible to me, however, it's not whether ultimately the actual Apple device is like a Windows Tablet PC that matters in terms of getting a boost in sales when an Apple tablet arrives. What I'm suggesting is that with all the rumors and idealized predictions about what an Apple tablet might be, there are people advocating for...

Media, especially caliber of CNN, does not trash products without motive. Did something happen? I don't understand why would write something innacurate and negative about a product that hasn't even shipped yet: http://www.cnn.com/2009...
They're just regurgitating CNet's editorial. I see stuff from TechCrunch all the time on WSJ.com and wonder the same.
- Adi
Right & here is the original: http://news.cnet.com/8301-19... 1) it still impacts CNN & as you say w/ TechCrunch the WSJ, right? and 2) how is Cnet's article really preparing consumers to make a decision? I am struggling to see how it even helps them with advertising, aside from burst traffic with damaged perception.

Regarding Tablets: I think notebooks are simply built wrong. We should have the motherboard behind the monitor so it can detach from the keyboard (like a docking station). This seems like the ideal best of both worlds that so many bloggers are arguing on whether people need Tablets. Tablets have a great use but as a feature not a product for many.
True, that's a nice form factor idea, BUT ... putting the motherboard behind the monitor would also place most of the laptop's mass there, thus making it unstable on a user's lap (or on any other surface it can't be propped up on). Not to mention the extra load on the hinge would lead to quicker failure thereof over time. Part of the reason most of the laptop's systems are below the keyboard is to provide a weight anchor for use. Sorry to be the mechanical engineer here, but .. yeah
- LANjackal
The Compaq TC1000 series had that design. The OLPC as well, although it wasn't a tablet and had a swivel screen. Being top-heavy is an issue but less notebooks are including optical drives, which makes them thinner. I'm down with it, but it's not that the notebook form factor is wrong, it's trying to create a form factor for tablets that work.
- Rodfather
It's all been tried before. Tablet PC's for consumers end up in a convertible notebook form factor because it's still a familiar notebook design with little, if any, change to the motherboard, with the option to convert to a slate by rotating the screen.
- Rodfather
I agree Rodfather but I'm think that I'm just thinking with the CrunchPad for example being just 2.6 lbs, it doesn't become as top heavy as previous attempts.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I am thinking that there may be minor Electro magnetic forces on the motherboard which may impact the monitor.
- Brent - Long Live Rock
AFAIK LCDs are immune to magnetic effects ... but I'm not an electrical engineer

It does make more sense to have the components together. Also, with todays smaller parts, it's possible to build designs that have the right balance - from a design as well as mechanical standpoint. The questions OEMs ask is if the ROI is enough to change assembly lines and add multiple products so can use the same parts in various models.
- Lora Heiny
Great point Lora! My guess is that we're already on the verge of seeing "Touch" move beyond the cell phone. The Apple Tablet, the CrunchPad, Windows 7 Touch features, etc may should some of that possible ROI.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
@manielse, a tablet on a small collapsible stand, plus a folding/collapsible add-on keyboard would pretty much be what you have in mind here, no? Personally, my main concern is, will the tablets have handwriting recog and smart gestures that will abbreviate/macro tons of cumbersome typing/clicking tasks? Because only then does the tablet form factor have a true justification IMO.
- Alex Schleber
@Alex Schleber - Some of these upcoming "tablets" may be slates that may or may not support touch, pen, etc. For those that support pen or touch on Windows, there is software today, such as ActiveWords, PenCommander, Symbol Commander, & several on-screen keyboard alternatives with shortcuts like DialKeys Gen2 (has special skins for using with auto / GPS, construction calculator, etc.).
- Lora Heiny
@Alex Schleber - Though I am not a fan of Smartphones without physical keyboards, I think the virtual keyboard (with the features mentioned) would be suitable for those times you just want a portable tablet (reading on the sofa, quick notetaking in a meeting, etc). I'm stretching a bit here but it also could potentially be used as a larger screen for your phone (like the Celio RedFly concept).
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Which would you buy today: 1) ultra-thin notebook w/ 10" or 12" display, future Intel Core, less than an inch thick & weighs 2.5lbs to 3.2lbs or 2) small notebook / netbook with 9.7" up to 10.2" display, future Intel Atom, less than an inch thick, and 2.5lbs to 3lbs & 3) can't afford it right now so maybe later or 4) which supports touch? ;).
Before you answer, notice how the difference between these notebooks primarily has to do with the processor. #1 is called a notebook, laptop, or ultra-thin notebook. #2 is referred aribtrarily as a netbook or small notebook because of arbitrary screen size and certain branded processor. #3 cost is a major factor in deciding whether to buy a PC, especially since people don't have discretionary funds right now. Decisions need to be based on value - what is best for their use. #4 is pure marketing created by various companies, like MID, UMPC, Tablet PC, device vs OS feature support. Seems like opportunity for an OEM to build what people want and will buy.
- Lora Heiny
Short answer: The one with the bigger battery life. So #2 + #4
- Rodfather
LOL OK - let's say they both have 3 cell battery to get that weight. :)
- Lora Heiny
Hehe. Same answer. The Atom would drain much less power which would give it the edge on battery life. It would make it a little harder to decide if the price were close to each other. I'm still using a ~year old Asus 1000H and I'm finding the 4-5 hr battery life not being enough still. That's just me though.
- Rodfather
Price is a big factor. Take something like the MacBook Air vs the Asus Seashell line. Ultraslim, low power. But you can buy 3 or 4 Asus' for the same price at the Air. For me I'd go cheap but I also want the 12" screen. I think thats the sweet spot for a useable ultraportable machine.

I taught the neighbor how to use a mouse this past weekend so I think it'll make it one more generation now at least.
- Steve C
I know several people that use mice with their notebooks in part because there's better precision. Of course almost all deskbound users use a mouse too. However I'm noticing more and more people using their cellphones or notebooks on the go and at these times they often don't use a mouse. If this trend continues most mass market software is going to need to improve support for imprecise pointing devices. For now the mouse is safe.
- Loren Heiny
from iPhone
Yes, as mobile PCs continue to outgrow desktop sales (which are declining rapidly), it's a big challenge to companies as things like extra keyboards and mice were add-ons to sales / profit. Designs for portability, scale, etc. are starting to show up. Will see if it helps.
- Lora Heiny
If the mouse fades away and touchpads grow in usage, it'll be interesting to see if the software adjusts, because if it does, these changes might actually make touch screens more practical.
- Loren Heiny
Are you using Windows 7 RTM? Is the Eee PC warm?
- Lora Heiny
No, I'm using the RC and the eee does not seem warm to me. I improved it some last night by turning off the page file so it may just be a slow SSD.

from iPhone
Have you tried setting up a ram-disk and moving the page files and browser caches there ? I don´t use windows on a regular basis but doing that on a friend´s SSD eee sped things up.
- Thomas Bøhm
Thanks for the suggestion, Thomas. I have now installed ImDisk, setup a ramdisk and told FF to store its temp files over there. FF is definitely running better now. The rest of the system still pauses a lot, but I can tell a difference with FF.

Couple years back I started porting the Music Composition Tool/Music Notepad to WPF as shown, but it got interrupted by my cancer treatments. However, now I'm looking at it and thinking about what it would take to finish it and get the code and app out to people.
