I'm desperately awaiting Feedsqueezer...are you?
@LeatherDonut (hilarious name, btw): the first mention I saw was on the blog post at the beginning of the month. How long *has it* been under dev? Do you know? Yesterday, the account tweeted for the first time, which is why I thought it was worth a look. - Sarah Perez
Well, I'm certainly willing to take a look at this. FB is so badly broken, I've all but decided to pull my last site. In the meantime, I'm going to transition my email subscribers to a commercial mail management service and make ready to self-host, if necessary. - Chris Baskind
We need a Feedburner competitor ASAP! - Jorge Escobar
@LeatherDonut: I tried, awaiting a response. :) Anyway, I'm curious if you are able to dig up any more links, because a search for it on TC, as you suggested, delivered nada: http://bit.ly/uwhL. I know it was mentioned at the beginning of the month on Dave's blog - maybe you are remembering that? I found very little on Google - Sarah Perez
@LeatherDonut: nice sleuthing! now we know for sure - this is new (yay!) - Sarah Perez
Winer or not, I do hope a solid competitor comes. I'm also happy I've used all my own urls for my feeds. Easy moves. - David Singer from FriendFeed MT Plugin
Ooopie, looks like Dave is not behind this, just promoting it via his website. Correcting post sadly :( - Sarah Perez
Here's why the confusion. Dave wrote: "Steve called a few minutes ago, and I volunteered to write about this. **I also volunteer to help get a Feedburner competitor on the air**, whether it's a small independent project or something run by Microsoft. **Update: Feedsqueezer.**" - Sarah Perez
So that means it *will* do atom feeds as well ;) - Andrew Smith
Anyone interested in a more technical, but independent method should look at the Apache Abdera project: http://abdera.apache.org/ - coldbrew
YES! Down with FeedBurner! - andy brudtkuhl
I can't figure out how to leave a comment on the RWW article, do they close comments after a while (for spam prevention, perhaps) ? - DGentry
It seems like the SUP protocol friendfeed has been pushing would be very useful for an RSS service like this. For sites serving lots of feeds, it would allow the RSS provider to poll for updates a lot more often. - DGentry

Working on my 9 month old daughters blog. The digital archive of her life is now official. http://www.kayleefruchter.com/
That site's awesome. Very cute. - Neal Jansons
Thanks for reminding me I still need to import all the stuff from from my 5yo's old blog over to her new space and repost stuff to my 3yos blog. Not enough time in the day. - Admiral Anika
Way too cute. - Mike Nayyar
That's neat, you are doing that too. I hadn't even thought of that. My wife and I want to get pregnant when she gets out of grad school and I will do that too (3-4 years from now, but soon). - Neal Jansons
Yeah, it's fun the first year, but after that it's a PITA. My kid's first website is 6 years old, then she got her first blog at the end of '03. My son's blog is 3 years old. I just moved them both to Wordpress and haven't imported anything yet. There's just too much data. - Admiral Anika
we use Totspot for our 7 month old. Has worked really well since it's engineered specifically for adding "firsts", importing photos and videos, growth charts, journals, etc. Highly recommended. Much easier than setting up a blog. - Nathan Chase
Cute! I love baby blogs. Here is my daughter's: http://www.roadofmiracles.com - Rochelle
Nathan, that's a great tip. I wish that was around when we had our first. I'm seriously considering getting them both Tumblr or Storytlr pages and letting them sort it out when they get older. I'm tired. LOL - Admiral Anika
Nathan, I have an account at Totspot, it's a neat service. My fear is the service shutting down at some point, and all that precious content will be forever lost. For now the blog suits the purpose for video embedding and quick posts of pictures. I also like the fact I can map a custom domain to the blog. - Mike Fruchter
@Rochelle, I love that blog. Thanks for sharing! Audrey is ADORABLE! - Mike Fruchter
For all the future boyfriends that want to look and see what she looked like at a young age? - CW™
Mike, also look up OurStory.com - great for recording a timeline of events and pictures. - Jesse Stay
@ Just CW, oh god that scares me :) On a side note every few weeks family are asking for recent pictures etc. Now it's easy for them they can simply goto her domain, or subscribe via email for updates. I hope to digitize and document every major event in her life on this blog. Future boyfriends be warned ahead of time, cold steel is not to far away :-) - Mike Fruchter
@Jesse, thanks. It's been bookmarked. I need to register for an account and check it out. - Mike Fruchter
Loved the photo of your little pumpkin, so CUTE!! It's such a great idea! I set up one for my 5yr old, she wanted a blog because both her dad and mom have one but I've been too lazy to help her update it. You've just inspired me to keep it going :) I am going to look up the others mentioned here as well. - MiaD
Anika, did you set the clock on your digital camera? If your photos have dates in them, just upload them to OurDoings for an insta-blog. Mike actually wrote an OurDoings review not to long ago. Since he wrote it I added support for custom domains. - Bruce Lewis
Thanks for the tip, Bruce. I don't think I can rely on my camera's settings. Just learned today that stuff I shot 5 days ago are timestamped 1/1/2006. :( - Admiral Anika
Once you upload it, though, Anika, you should at least have the correct uploading date on your PC. That should give you a rough idea of when pictures were taken, I think. - Kamilah Gill
she's so very cute Mike :-) - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Mike - Congrats on getting the blog up! late to the convo, but glad you've checked us out; we do have a wide open API (http://www.totspot.com/api) that we intend to make more accessible over time through more consumer facing stuff to give users confidence / control of their content (though we have every intention of lasting ;)) ...domain mapping, hard-copy printing, and more, are also on the way - would love to hear any more thoughts you might have for us to get better - feel free to email michael@totspot - Michael Broukhim
@Michael, thanks for the comments. I will be sure to give the service a second look at. I have heard nothing but great things about it :) - Mike Fruchter

Yesterday I reported on an apparent hacker attack on the iMedia Connection site. It appears the site must have been hit hard as the site is down over 48 hours. What are you doing to make sure your blog is backed up in the case of a hacker attack or server outage?

5 Ways OurDoings Is Better Than Every Other Photo-Sharing Site - http://ourdoings.com/ourdoin...
Have a pro flickr account and wanted to try out ourdoings, but couldn't easily find any iPhoto integration (either as export plug-in or via the excellent PictureSync utility). I didn't even bother to upload a test batch of images. This comment is free - no need to send a check :) - Niklas Morberg
Funny you mention PictureSync. I actually started work to support it then learned the author had moved on. For now it's a 2-step process from iPhoto - export to a zip archive, then upload that archive. There are people doing it that way, but for now the Picasa desktop client is the best way to upload to OurDoings on a Mac. - Bruce Lewis from fftogo
The author moved on to Pixelpipe, and I notice they have an iPhoto plugin. Paul Wade has been using Pixelpipe to OurDoings...I wonder if he uses that plugin: http://friendfeed.com/mrdigit... - Bruce Lewis

Missouri man, angered over DTV switch, shoots his TV set | ksdk.com | St. Louis, MO - http://www.ksdk.com/news...
The digital transition has left some confused, but a Joplin man was down right frustrated with the switch. So frustrated, in fact, that he peppered his television set with gunfire. Police responded to the man's house Wednesday after reports of shots being fired inside. Turns out the 70-year-old gunman was livid over losing cable and could not get his digital converter box to work. Police took Walter Hoover into custody after a brief standoff and charged him with unlawful use of a firearm. - Leo Laporte

Shaq, 'Citizen of Twitteronia,' Welcomes Twitter Stalkers - http://valleywag.gawker.com/5157662...
I shared this too. I admit to some confusion regarding Valleywags concern for stalkers. Shaq is over 7 feet tall and packed with muscle. Only a lunatic with a gun could bother him, and he probably has an escort for just that. - Kevykev
Valleywag failed to take into account that Shaq is somewhat tall and therefore noticable, whether he's tweeting his location or not. Plus, unless the person is armed, Shaq can take care of himself. There are other Twitter users who reveal their location at times, so Shaq isn't unusual in this regard. - Ontario Emperor from fftogo

Breaking the Myth of Megapixels - New York Times - http://www.nytimes.com/2007...
Breaking the Myth of Megapixels - New York Times
"I created three versions of the same photograph, showing a cute baby with spiky hair in a rowboat. One was a 5-megapixel shot, one was 8 megapixels and one was 13. I asked 291 Digital, a New York graphic imaging company whose clients include ad agencies and fashion companies, to print each one at a posterlike 16 by 24 inches. (They were digital C prints, printed on Durst Lambda at 400 dpi, if that means anything to you.) We mounted the three prints on a wall in Union Square in Manhattan. Then, cameras rolling, we asked passers-by if they could see any difference. A small crowd gathered, and several dozen people volunteered to take the test. They were allowed to mash their faces up against the print, step back and squint, whatever they liked. Only one person correctly identified which were the low-, medium-, and high-resolution prints. Everybody else either guessed wrong or gave up, conceding that there was absolutely no difference." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
Mike Herf showed me similar samples when they were deciding the default resolution to have Picasa upload to Picasaweb. The thing is, if you take a high quality high res sensor and downsample, you'll still have a great image. - Joe Beda ()
It's the same with video. I almost wish my video cam was 720p instead of 1080p, just so I didn't have the anxiety of throwing out quality to save disk space while being fully aware that I'm not a videophile. Same goes for the anxiety of keeping my RAWs. - Blake Caldwell
Been saying this for some time. Especially important in the P&S market because the additional resolution isn't warranted AND can add noise to the image making it worse than one from a lower res camera. - Rick Bucich from twhirl
We went from a 5mpx cam to an 8 mpx cam for work. No one noticed. In a pinch, we've used our 1.3 mpx cellphone cameras for our work and clients have raved about the great quality shots. - Admiral Anika
Wa-wa-wait. If you have 5, 8, 13 Mpx images and you print them out at the SAME resolution (400dpi - the Durst is a fine machine, by the way), you should be getting three different SIZES, not three 16" by 24" images. All this shows is that for having a good 16" by 24" print at 400 dpi, a 5 Mpx image *may* be enough - and that the RIP for the Durst does a great job at extrapolation. - dario
dario, I think what they were saying were that they printed the same size, but at 400dpi. - Admiral Anika
Anika, exactly! I mean, all three images were enlarged by the RIP - obviously the 5 Mpx quite a bit more than the 13 Mpx - it's not what I'd call "scientific" but I concur it helps to show that a good 5 Mpx camera can take perfectly good pictures. (I miss drum-scanned 120 slides a bit, tho - you could blow those up to the size of a wall :)) - dario
I've seen them all, and man, they're all the same. - Morgan Haley
Well if you print them all at 400dpi then I would expect them to look pretty much the same. But I can guarantee they would look different on a good monitor or using a good photo re-touching program like Adobe Lightroom to fix them up. Especially if you were using RAW. - David McCarter
If you can print them at 16x24 with no discernible difference in quality why would it matter what they look like in Lightroom? - Brian Sullivan
I wonder if we can get Pogue to post the images. - Kevin Pedraja
So you mean, that having more megapixels isn't going to make me a better photographer. Oh No! - Alexander Kesselaar
