It's not a memory hog in windows. I'm reminded how glad I am to have made the switch every time I use my wife or daughter's computer and I sit there waiting for firefox to load.
- Jim Addz No Value
No, the numbers say most people prefer Fx above everything else, actually. Chrome is like Linux: it has a tiny minority of very fanatical supporters who make their number seem a lot larger than the mosquitoes they actually are. Also, Chrome's higher system overhead has been repeatedly shown in independent testing. It IS fast, but there's a tradeoff in RAM and CPU resources.
- LANjackal
I like Firefox. I don't like Chrome, plus Chrome is quite slow on my system. I like the Chrome interface least of all the browsers I've tried, below Firefox, Flock, Opera, Maxthon, Internet Explorer, and other browsers whose names I've forgotten.
- SuezanneC Baskerville
I usually prefer Chrome. I started Firefox today just to check for updates and I was reminded how slow it is compared to Chrome when it comes to starting up. Flash rendering is also quicker in Chrome.
- George Moga
Chrome uses memory efficiently. Firefox uses more and more until you close it.
- Raphael, Raphael
Chrome is both a memory hog and really, really slow. At least it is slow when I use the beta 4 version with a lot of plugins(beta is forced). In fact it became so slowthat it is almost unusable on my netbook. The same netbook has comparable plugins (but even more and better working ones) in firefox and that installation just flies! Yes, Chrome is fast on Java, but that is it! Try to load anything with a long page, like a newspaper or my favorite Swedish price comparison site, and it really takes forever.
- Magnus
And on my quadcore desktop with windows 7, it is the same story. Here the waiting time isn't as annoying in Chrome, but it is noticeably slower in everyday usage. I don't know about the stable versions without the plugins, but that isn't interesting at all, since plugins is what makes the browsers, at least for me! And yes, it really is a memory hog. Used about 600 megs on my 1 gig...

Weird. Chrome works more efficiently and faster than FFx on all my computers. Raphael++ on the mem leaks in FFx

Safari on a daily basis for me - Only use the others for special features when needed. Wit a Flash blocker I've never had an overload with Safari (Mac) no matter the number of windows/tabs.
- PXLated
Tried Chrome didnt like it. I love Firefox for the extensions.
- Shawn aka ringking
Chrome is AWESOME with extensions! I love it... seriously amazing
- Susan Beebe
I am still using Safari over Chrome. Chrome is a memory hog and slows my computer.
- Louis Gray
My friends want me to use Firefox but it is kinda hard to breakaway from Chrome.
- Stephen
I never feel like using any other browser besides safari when I am using Mac.
- ashish
Chrome now has 98% of my online time, on it since it came out, Win 7 runs it smoothly, both stable and dev versions. Some extensions are partly a hype, but this fast simple browser or coming OS are way beyond that. I did have memory issues on XP but that old machine had 1GB Ram :-)
- Majento
I would really appreciate if someone could provide details on how Chrome is a memory hog or otherwise mis-manages resoures.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
i still dig FF. i'm soaking in it now.
- Joe Silence
General Use: (OS X): 70% Safari, 25% Firefox and 5% Chrome. During Web Development: 94% Firefox, 5% Safari and 1% Chrome.
- Micah Wittman
Micah, have you checked the web dev tools in Chrome? They can be pretty helpful. LANjackal, you may compare Chrome usage to mosquitoes, but a lot of people do like it. Chrome has also raised the bar in browser speed, and the resulting faster competition is good for users regardless of which browser they like.
- Matt Cutts

I prefer Chrome. Try this simple test. Highlight on your desktop both Chrome and Firefox icons, hit Enter and see which opens first. That's faster.
- Will Higgins™
Matt, thanks - I am aware of the Chrome tools. Do you know if, with Developer Tools, there's a way to highlight a select a DOM and go right into edit mode? With Firebug I can alter/add markup then toggle out of edit mode and it goes live - it's so handy.

What web apps/services have impressed you the most this year? What ones have you used the most? What new apps have been added to your regularly-used list?
What apps or services would you like to see do well in 2010? What would you like to see change in 2010? What apps have been disappointing or feel they deserve to do better next year?
- Kol Tregaskes
In terms of iPhone apps -- MagicSleep.
- Miss Elle
Well I'm, of course, going to say FriendFeed has had a good year - though the FB buy-out make a huge dent. If I think back to last year and what I wasn't using that I am now then Twitter had improved a lot, particularly with the Twitter Lists, which were long overdue. Chrome has become my default browser - I hardly touch Firefox and IE could easily be uninstalled if I could.
- Kol Tregaskes
Google Wave was impressive but it needs some serious optimisation and made a lot easier to use. Hopefully next year we'll see some improvements introduced. Groups would be the biggest new feature for me. Facebook is getting used more but it needs a lot more FriendFeed-esque features.
- Kol Tregaskes
A tie: Wordpress and Friendfeed. Just hope Friendfeed can stay cutting edge.
- laosan
Friendfeed and reddit seem to be doing well, with a clean and clear text interface...
- TrafficBug
Web apps... Google Wave was a disappointment. Can't really say I have a use for it. Friendfeed had a great year and is my most used web app. Part of what has made friendfeed great for me has been AJ's clean widescreen theme and Micah's huge collection of Greasemonkey scripts. I don't think friendfeed would be quite as enjoyable without them. On the desktop...There is a small,...

I still believe Google Wave is exactly what I need for project discussion, support or training that works live and over time and that can stay available through time as new people join in etc. Or a family network thing... Best elements of irc/chat with the best elements of forum/wiki - the potential is there but it was never meant to be a social network, but a work tool/platform. Alas getting the people I collaborate with on Wave will be another thing.

I see Google Wave as a new form of email, and your Google Wave address should be protected as much as you'd protect your email address (there are some privacy concerns with making it public) Wave would be great if the kind of email you send and receive would be improved by the extra functionality it provides, but most of the email correspondence I receive is just newsletters and alerts,...

I can't live without KatMouse now that I am used to it.
- Matt G
Evernote is the biggest new app added to my stable in 2009. And I actually pay for the premium service. SHOCKING.
- LANjackal
In the sense that it has helped me access many services in one and like those hits that appear by December and go straight to the top of the charts, I have to say, Google Chrome but with extensions. Believe me I am really sorry to accept this fact. I would prefer some top 5 or top 10 kind of poll :)
- Carlos Lorenzo
Kol KatMouse isn't new but its new for me. Whatever your mouse is on you can scroll. ie you don't have to click on the box to scroll. Kicks arse.
- Matt G
Feedly, posterous, threadsy, and friendfeed, of course.
- Michael Fidler
twilio is very cool. I have not use it yet but I like it. I will use
- KeremTiryaki
threadsy, posterous, and seesmic (via web) most used. Wave is most impressive but have not been able to implement the way I want. I believe we haven't seen full potential yet. Next year fo-shur. Feedly is reader of choice and Lazyfeed is gaining to give me whats up.
- amarquart
Seesmic Desktop is good but he latest version is way to buggy to use so I'm currently using TweetDeck but I'm only using either one (well at least a lot more) because of Twitter Lists.
- Kol Tregaskes
Evernote Premium and Flickr Premium I still pay for so they must get a mention. But definitely Friendfeed and Twitter.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
I would say Evernote, Dropbox , Feedly and of course Friendfeed. IN the past 3 months I have used the first 2 and just amazed at how I did work before. I am looking for Lazyfeed and posterous to be huge for me next year as I learn how to use them the best. For the iphone I say biteSMS, Cycorder and Pixelpipe have been big for me along with Shazaam. Also, cinch will be huge for me next year.

Bandcamp.com This site is a godsend to musicians and also very good for music fans (the latter because it offers a large choice of file formats to buy in and also makes it easy to embed music and share via social media).
- Spidra Webster
It's not really a web-app (at least not how I use it), but at least a cloud-app: Evernote. It has definitely changed my life for the better. I have also been very impressed with the Mozilla Bespin demo I saw.

Well on the iPhone: Tweetie, Yelp, Ustream Live Broadcaster, Pandora, Snapture, ShopSavvy, Remember The Milk, Shazam, RedLaser, Read It Later, Kinndle App from Amazon, Barns and Noble E-Reader, Kayak.com app, BNO, Bible app, and one of the newest apps I just found last night is a guide for the game FallOut 3.
- Colide81 (James)
Online apps that I find I like are well ofcourse FriendFeed, Pandora.com, itunes, twitter, firefox, stumble upon the service and the toolbar, evernote, and much more. Also just to add one more thing to the list of my favorite iphone apps, I have started using eBay to check diferent auctions that I have been running to keep track of bidding prices, and questions bidders may ask me. I also love the Tumblr app.
- Colide81 (James)
Guys, I'm having a big clear out on Twitter but want to make sure I'm following all my Friendfeed friends - could you please link to your twitter account in the comments below?
http://twitter.com/rahsheen - pretty positive there was a tool capable of doing this, but not sure if it still exists and can't remember what it was called...I think someone here developed it.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
What you can do is run this and then click all the Twitter links in the results. It's everyone you are following. It gives a big page of links to all their blogs and services: http://hiphs.com/ff/ffriends

April, I actually ran it, but it's still hanging, not as quickly as before but it only pulled 2800 of the users from Zee's public subscriptions. This blog post is rather rough and ready - a work in progress - but I wanted to push it out before the holidays. Find out which items from this group in 2009 were most discussed (comments/likes)!
- Neil Saunders
hey, good stuff: especially like the healthy diversity concerning the contributors of most commented/liked entries, do you happen to have a little stat on the most frequent contributors in terms of number of entries, likes, comments or all of them?
- Attila Csordas
It's certainly easy to calculate per user contributions using the API data, but I haven't done it. Might be fun, but I'm more interested in what's discussed than who posts. Feel free to adapt my code!
- Neil Saunders
what's the license for the code, and is there a way to download it other that copy+paste? looks cool, thanks for sharing!
- Mike Chelen
Licence is "it's on my blog, you can copy it and do what you want" :-)
- Neil Saunders
It means I don't take licencing of my posts very seriously :-) Although now I look closely at my blog, the relevant icon is top-right, just above the search box.
- Neil Saunders
although NC and SA clauses are a bit restrictive, it is fine for the time being. since the code is useful, giving licensing some consideration may be worthwhile :)
- Mike Chelen
If it were actual code for download, I'd think about it more. When it's text on an open, public web page, I just assume people will do with it what they will. Anything goes, except claiming that you wrote it :-)
- Neil Saunders
copyright law prohibits duplication without your consent, regardless of whether it is on a website or in a repository. while some may break these laws, many of us are committed to working within its boundaries through the use of open-source licenses :)

I'm intrigued that things are so spread out - no one person has more than one entry in the top 10 list...good sign of collaborative effort IMO

Facebook acquired FriendFeed on August 10. Am I right that there is no significant change in number of posts over the year or after the acquisition?

This is really cool Neil. When I saw readI immediately though if this could be done on a rolling monthly basis this could be the new version of BioBlogs. Maybe some sort of simple Sinatra app.
- Michael Barton

Neil, I agree w/ you: most commented/liked entries are more interesting than the list of most frequent contributors (although that is interesting nevertheless)
- Attila Csordas
I like the idea of automated monthly analysis as a web app! Tricky bit will be fetching only new entries and not missing any, but once a db structure is in place, shouldn't be too hard. I'll give that some serious thought.

Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks!

Absolutely awesome, Michael. You are extremely talented. Everyone should repost these pix and help to make you famous. You should be doing this full time - you obviously have some passion for this. Bravo.

These are really beautiful, Michael. Do you sell them?
- Shannon Jiménez
Chris, I would love to say they're mine, but it's not true. I've had them for a while, but I'll find the artists names. It will just require a little backtracking. Besides, they deserve the credit; all I did was find them:-)

Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found another post which helps to prove that these are done in pencil. Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package.

A bell does ring here. And I am remembering why I was so attracted to the tiger...and the lion for that matter. These are exact replicas of prints I had in our bedroom when I lived in Dallas. I had bought the prints (in color) at a department store,

Actually, I have learned quite a bit about these drawing since I made this post. Not only have I discovered all of the artists, but I've learned more about how they are created. I keep thinking that "Twitter like" messaging (not provided by Twitter) will be added onto most web community sites. That doesn't kill Twitter the website of course. But the Twitter "experience" won't be unique to just Twitter in the very near future.
- Gregg H.
I'm still trying to figure out what the Twitter experience is.

Rutger: Relating the Twitter experience to the FriendFeed experience I would describe Twitter as realtime statements without being able to meaningfully discern conversation out of those dissociated statements... is this a reply, a reply to what piece of information, was that a reply to something else... Feature. Tweetmeme's image is no more out of place here than it is on your blog.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Bruce, that's fine, but I'd love for FriendFeed to say that. Otherwise I'd love to see them allow us to ignore the tweetmeme button.
- Jesse Stay
How would your blog communicate that certain images should be ignored other than omitting them from the Media RSS feed?
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Bruce, FriendFeed can ignore any image they like. It's their service.
- Jesse Stay
I don't want FriendFeed to decide which images to include. I want to decide what images to include. It's my feed. (I'm not joking or being contrary. It works the way I think it should work.)
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Yes, but you could decide which images FriendFeed blocks on FriendFeed. Personally, I don't want web bugs in my stream - I think they should kill them. It opens up for some interesting uses of the site, but I think it's dangerous.
- Jesse Stay
That would work until you clicked through to the blog post. The problem has to be solved at the browser end.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
I don't mind the Tweetmeme button on my blog. I mind it on FriendFeed. That's beside the point though - the point is web bugs can be embedded by anyone in a post to FriendFeed, posting cookies, tracking IPs, and possibly more. If that's what FriendFeed wants I'm fine with it - it seems like an issue though.
- Jesse Stay
I'm sure it was a conscious decision. They know how to make their own thumbnails.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Jesse: I don't think there is any security hole here. Certainly any external pieces of media can track you but it can't do anything serious like, for example, access FriendFeed cookies. Disabling third-party cookies solves your problem of being tracked across the web.
- Benjamin Golub
The Tweetmeme plugin for wordpress allows you to put the image at the bottom of your RSS posts. I keep it at the top on the actual blog and at the bottom for RSS so I can avoid this problem.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Isn't this problem on you, the content publisher's side? You told FriendFeed to read a mediaRSS-enabled feed that pointed to images that you don't control. You introduced the ostensible third-party tracking on your own site, embedded that tracking into your feed, and had FriendFeed import the feed. I'd rather have FriendFeed import the feed as accurately as possible and have you remove...
- Mark Trapp
Mark, no, that problem is FriendFeed's. If they don't want 3rd-party images that can dynamically produce content, set cookies, etc. on their users' computers they need to stop that practice. It doesn't sound like they want that though, so it sounds like it's no one's problem in that case. I was just raising what I thought was an issue. If they don't think it's an issue then I guess it's fair game.
- Jesse Stay
Embedding offsite images from RSS feeds is not unusual -- for example, Google Reader does the same. As others have mentioned, if this is a concern for you, there are browser config options that will address it across all sites.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, thanks - that's fine. I just wanted to be sure the FriendFeed team was okay with it. Now to come up with some cool technologies that utilize that. :-)
- Jesse Stay
it is important for publishers and users to be aware of these technical implications. this is a good feature for some purposes, and hadn't been apparent to me before, thanks for pointing it out
- Mike Chelen
iit's a moot point since there aren't any friendfeed users any more
- SuezanneC Baskerville
About that whole idea of disallowing 3rd party images in friendfeed posts: That might make it impossible for some people to have any images displaying with their posts if their images are not hosted on the same domain as their blog, which would be the case with Blogger's *.blogspot.com blogs. Plus, even if you whitelist the domains Google uses for Blogger image hosting, it still creates...

Personally I wish more sites would come up with dynamic images that can be passed around via feeds (and email, facebook). The friendfeed image embed works great and gives people a snapshot of dynamic content without having to click through just to find out nothing has changed. I'm not sure what facebook's safe_image.php does but you can see the latest retweet counts in your facebook notes (http://www.facebook.com/note...) but not your media elements!!
- Chris Myles
April.. I use flickr with blogger (they have a better integration with blogger than picasa for single images with captions etc). The sad thing is Blogger doesn't even include media elements for non-picasa images..including you-tube videos etc. It makes it hard to generate enticing feed summaries with thumbnails (via custom scripts, friendfeed, facebook).
- Chris Myles
For a long time, since before you could upload pics to Blogger, I used a folder on my software site to hold all the blog images I used on my personal blog. Everything was handled through WLW, from creating thumbnails, watermarking, and uploading it all. When I changed hosting, I had to start using the integration with Picasa Web through WLW to do it because WLW doesn't support FTPES,...

Yes, only that 1 finger on my left hand though. I broke that one when I was a kid and have been able to do that ever since. I can also bend the 2nd joint of both ring fingers, without bending the first.
