Social Median introduced likes and dislikes for items today. What do you think of the option to "dislike" something or how they implemented it? - http://www.socialmedian.com/louisgr...
The word "like" is awkward on FF when say a favorite celebrity dies. I also like to register my disapproving interest from time to time. That said, I don't really want to "bury" a story a la Digg. I can't really muster an opinion on the like/dislike meter just yet, I'll need to use it for a while longer.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
If FF used this style, they'll still need to get it bumped on every like/dislike. But the paradigm is still very awkward when you like that the story was shared but dislike the content (like @Daniel's celeb death example). I still think the text should be "Interesting" or something similar.

We finally moved from the subtext-laden "Friend" to "Follow", let's not saddle ourselves with "like" vs. "dislike" just yet. Xero is exactly right - we are here for interesting content, regardless of our like/dislike/friend/enemy orientation.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
The way we have implemented it thus far is that both a "like" or a "dislike" clips the story for you. Like/Dislike thus is an expression of your mood on the story, while clipping it is a simple way to let other people know it's worth checking out, regardless of your mood on the story.

How about a button for "On the Fence", "Hedging My Bets" or "Afraid of Commitment"

if i submit something and it gets overwhelming dislikes....is there a bailout option ? ;)
- Jeff (the メガマクダジ of FF)
No, Jeff there is no bailout option. However you will be seen as a Maverick and an agent for change ;)
- Rob Diana
dislike is a bad idea that will rapidly descend the users into a monoculture'
- RAPatton
@RAPatton -- oh, that's right, we forgot that people only have positive opinions :-)
- Jason Goldberg
I agree with everyone here who would like a better way to express our endorsement of the worthiness of a post rather than approval of the content within it. Please, please FF folks, reconsider "Like."
- Christopher Sacca
Jason, there will be a lot more negativity once dislike is introduced because the conversations will start moving from what we like to what we dislike
- RAPatton
I think Hide does a pretty good job here without being too negative. Not sure a Dislike option is needed.
- Kol Tregaskes
@jeff -- we'll explore that. we figured we'd throw it out there and learn first before guessing on that one
- Jason Goldberg
hey what happened. i just lost the ability to like something. all i can see now is the % of each, but can't choose my own....was it something i said ;) ?
- Jeff (the メガマクダジ of FF)
@jeff are you sure you didn't already like that story?
- Jason Goldberg
My own feeling is that "bump / dump" is the right dichotomy for putting my own personal impramenteur on what I see, but it's ONLY relevant if that information goes into changing what I see as a result. If it's going into a global pool to adjust what others see or how it's presented, then there had BETTER be some kind of Web of Trust system going into it, where folks nearer my tastes get influenced more strongly and vice versa. Because, frankly, I don't think the bulk of FF's community does find things interesting or not even roughly like I do.

Good concept, but I don't like the way it hijacked my facebook status. I tested it by disliking one of my own posts, then facebook said "Josh dislikes Josh Haley..." which was actually pretty funny. Once.
- Josh Haley
@josh -- we're going to be providing users with many controls over how/which of their items are shared on facebook. Early next week should have that live. Facebook does not make this easy so we went for a default first, got some user feedback, and now will adjust.
