Perhaps the steps are off by a factor of 2: The Garmin doesn't directly display the counting of each step, but instead shows the rate so I was back-calculating. My running cadence is pretty steady at 78 - 80 strides per minute which yields 6.68 feet per stride which seems high. (I'm pretty sure about the number of minutes I was out.) So perhaps 20,780 steps? - Brian Johns

As for running injuries, I've found that running is inherently destructive. (And I'm not the only one who thinks this.) Putting on the miles is a game of cat and mouse: me against my body. I have to be smart to not hurt myself. I feel your pain, literally. That frustration about not being able to be active when you want to is... frustrating. - Brian Johns

BTW, a common rule of thumb is to increase your mileage no more than 10% per week. - Brian Johns

Stephen, check out Active.com. That's where I find out about most of my runs. Also, I concur with everything Brian says. :) Stephen, don't be too hard on yourself.
