Our hobby of showing up at Stephen Mack's house without any warning finally paid off! They let us in. Thanks for being a fantastic impromptu host, Stephen. :)

The secret to beating Stephen Mack at Fitbit is to wait until he's asleep, and then cram 15k steps in the last three hours of the day. #20k #sleepisunproductive

Why You'll Never Make A Living Playing Live Poker Tournaments
"It's nearly impossible to be a tournament specialist in the States unless playing high stakes. Even in Vegas, the full schedule of tournament series supplemented by dailies isn't a viable profession. Yeah, you can make money doing it, but not nearly as much as you can make playing $1-$3 no-limit. If you want to be a tournament specialist, move to Mexico and grind online. If your cash game has holes, it's time to plug them." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet
During the height of TV and online poker a few years ago there were very regular tournaments in Vegas, but most casinos have cut back their poker rooms and tournaments. Back then my friend bought into a tourny at Caesar's and they had cameras everywhere. Not so unusual for the time. It's all about the cash game now, which is many hours of grinding with a sufficient bankroll as the article points out. - Eric - It's My Thing

Sales of Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish Show We're All Still 11 Sometimes
"U.S. sales of Sour Patch Kids—one of the country’s best-selling gummy-or-chew candies—were $184.9 million last year, while sales of Swedish Fish were $111.4 million. The official name for the category is “pastilles, gums, jellies, and chews,” and overall sales of all these were up 6.1 percent." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet

"There's a well-worn saying in the world of politics: "All politics is local", spawned by former House Speaker Tip O'Neill, who explained that a politician succeeds by understanding the needs of the people who voted them into office. What directly impacts the individual's happiness and well-being will almost always trump a more philosophical issue - even if it is one of national interest. Product development isn't all that different." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet

Books Step Behind the Curtain of Tech's Leading Companies
"The end of 2013 brought us an unusual array of tales on technology going behind the public faces of some of technology's biggest names, including Apple, Google, Amazon and the newest $30 billion kid on the block, Twitter. So I spent a good amount of the holiday break taking in stories, with their own various embellishments, covering the challenges of building a mobile operating system at Google and Apple, the executive tug of war and pivot of Twitter, the focus on design in Jony Ive's laboratory, and how Amazon has craftily executed on its plan to become the single store for everything under the sun." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet

Either you are in Engineering, or you are in Sales.
"At BlueArc, our longtime CEO and executive chairman Gianluca Rattazzi had a saying which he often weaved into his presentations at our company all-hands meetings. "Either you are in engineering, or you are in sales." The idea was to have employees from all corners of the company take ownership of our shared revenue goals, or think about what each of us could do, whether we were in Marketing, HR, Finance or Support, to encourage us to meet our number. Even if we weren't dialing for dollars or meeting with customers, if we weren't the people actually building the product ourselves, we had to think like salespeople. It also was aimed to reduce conflict between teams, as we wouldn't shake our heads at the antics of account managers, or point fingers when one territory or account proved harder than expected." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet

"Instead of being an unchanging brick that waits for my next instruction, smart services like Google Now are bringing me updates relevant to my interests at the right time, and the relatively new Cover app is showing me what applications I might want to do next. Developed by my good friends +Todd Jackson and +Edward Ho, along with +Gordon Luk, and designed only for +Android, Cover learns when I use different apps, and where, and brings those applications to a key piece of real estate on our phones that doesn't get much love - the lock screen." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet

louisgray.com: Now Commerce: Trying to Solve Demand for Instant Gratification
"We are progressing toward a world of "now commerce", where we can order it now, and expect the results practically instantly. The end of 2013 shows we're getting closer, but the system's not yet quite ready for the pressure, even if consumers are. Simply put: Nobody expected everyone to wait until the very last minute to order Christmas gifts, but everyone did. As UPS told BusinessWeek: "We had our peak projections, and the volume has passed our projections." So all the models failed." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet
