Although I'm not a database guy, I like SQL Server.
- Alan Le
I hate SQL but I used to use MySQL because it was easy but then I migrated to Postgresql (probably just to be different). However, now I try to avoid database work whenever I can.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I want to say Access just to be contrary ;-) Dunno, I've dealt with Oracle, MSSQL and MySQL more than Postgre SQL. Of those three, I prefer the interface MSSQL offers, MySQL for size and speed, and Oracle for sheer unadulterated power.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
For what purpose? For corporate work like data warehousing I want Oracle. For anything smaller it would be MySql.
- Rob Diana
I really like Oracle, but it's overkill for most stuff. I have a special place in my heart for PostgreSQL, but my workhorse RDBMS is MySQL.
- Mark Trapp
MS SQL is my default. MySQL when I'm going for free or w/ PHP. Oracle if I need a huge cluster and several terabytes, though MSSQL is catching up on that. Access or SQLExpress if I only have one user.
- xero
Do you vote for a specific DB because it's the only one you know, or because you experienced a few and decided this is the best one for you?
- Amit Morson
MySQL & PostgreSQL for web & other critical apps. SQLite for others. It depends of what I need to achieve..

His wife, Lucy, is really nice. One of the nicest people I met in Davos. The prettiest place they have been? New Zealand. They said the people there were the nicest they have met too.
- Robert Scoble
I wasn't expecting to hear a cold place.
- Robert Scoble
NZ is really nice. I wanna go back some time and explore even more of it.
- Simon Wicks
My wife later asked how the Pages got seated at our table. By sheer luck. Oh, and of course I asked if we could ride on the Google Plane. He said it was full already and that tons of people were asking. We were having lunch after the Burda/DLD/Booz ski race (I sucked).
- Robert Scoble
More interesting, traveling to more eccentric locations.
- Richard A.
They took that question literally. : ) I guess the artic is where they like to chill. . .
- Kyle
Arctic is certainly one of the coolest places I've been :)
- Nicola Quinn
As a New Zealander, that's very nice of Larry and Lucy to say so.
- Simon Taylor
Simon: Steve Wozniak and my dad say the same thing.
- Robert Scoble
Robert where is your coolest place you traveled to?
- Jadito
Jadito: my heart will always be in New Orleans. But if I had a jet waiting to take me anywhere I would probably guide it to Paris.
- Robert Scoble
Remote parts of Ireland (unfortunately diminishing) - where magic exists
- Candy Schwartz
Robert, then you have never seen Svalöv! Haha ;-)
- Rutger Blom
Why is the arctic a funny answer? It really is the most amazing place on earth. You should go Robert you would love it. I'm a kiwi. Thanks larry's wife :) we are nice.
- Chris Johnson
Chris: when I say "cool" I don't mean "cold."
- Robert Scoble
With all my respect I'd advice you to see Istanbul. (Has anyone been to Istanbul?)
- Ozgur Poyrazoglu
Robert: BTW today is Waitangi Day, 6 February, the day New Zealanders celebrate (or protest) the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Maori chiefs and representatives of the British Crown in 1840. This is our national day and for better or for worse, the treaty and its interpretation have helped shape the culture of NZ http://tinyurl.com/5vh3yshttp://tinyurl.com/bpnbvf
- Simon Taylor
Paris is also at the top of my list for great cities to tromp around in. Ozgur, Istanbul and Budapest are the two remaining places on the list of places I've never seen but would love to. I've heard from so many people that Istanbul is a great place to visit.

Susan: Peace, clarity, air, landscape, people. For me anyway.

Yup been using the Beta as it works on Win7. Seems fine to me. It is a bit different layout wise from the previous version.
- Chris Johnson
Chris - thanks for the nice feedback!
- Susan Beebe
I have installed it. Like the layout. And you can still have thousand chat windows open at the same time :)
- Baard @ Pixum
I've tried all the beta version - and it seems that the guys made a great product after all these betas. Try it out - looks like and iTunes now ;)

havent tried it yet.. but generally haven't gotten into the skype thing, even after all these years... :-/

You can always get a MacBook and put Windows on it anyway! Be a maverick! :)
- Fa La La La Lindsay
No, +I+ want the new MacBook. Unfortunately there's this little thing called the economy that'll probably keep us on our old ones for quite a while.
- Robert Scoble
*cough* Alienware laptop. That's what you want.
- Candace
So do I. My dad can't arrange it for me. Trade you a used Latitude D610 for a Powerbook...and that isn't a typo.

This article, like Pascal's wager, suffers from the false premise. Pascal assumed either no God or God as described in the Bible. When you add the possiblity that there is a God unlike the Biblical one, his agrueme t falls apart. If you reconize the potential waste of money / loss of freedom of some green programs; doing nothing is a viable option.
- Robert Hafer
Well, I guess you have no problems buying gas made from oil produced by the likes of Russia and Iran for the rest of your life then eh, Robert?
- Alex Scoble
Robert: doesn't that depend on the values to attribute to those? i would argue anyone who thought "potential waste of money" was more valuable than the earth surviving was a total fruitcake (aka crazy).
- Chris Johnson
This is super cool. CNN and Microsoft creating a photosynth of the exact moment when Mr O is sworn in. Very cool. Will be great to see the outcome. AND if you are going send in your mobile phone pictures. Email address is in the post.
- Chris Johnson
We have one here, but I don't get on it. To me, it's worse than a Blackberry cause they know you are in the office and so you have to respond. =(
- Shevonne
I actually never worked anywhere that permitted it! But I know many large companies do employ presence apps/IM apps...I probably wouldn't have stayed logged off if I had to use IM at work though...I'm not a fan of interruptions
- Sarah Perez
I've only communicated with co-workers via IM (AIM, MSN, and now Skype) -wait, that came out wrong. Omg. COFFEE KICK IN PLEASE.
- Mona Nomura
We use standard IM (mostly AIM & WLM) to communicate across our 3 offices and with clients.
- Kevin Pedraja
I use it daily to communicate with my teammates. It allows us to easily communicate quickly and efficiently. You can ignore an IM, a phone ringing over and over is a distraction to me.
- Sloan Bowman
We HAVE TO use MSN and Skype at work. If you are not online - you are not working :)
- Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
Sloan, agreed I sometimes cover the phone with a tea cosy :-)
- Sally Church
When I worked on political campaigns EVERYONE was on IM - and you either communicated via there or by email. That was normal for us - I was curious about others. So most of you work via clients that already exist it seems like?
- Nation Hahn
Lots of office communicator. It's integrated with our phone system.
- Chris Johnson
If by "enterprise", you mean some closed-off, in-house IM system that's only for the business, I feel the same way about that as I would about an "enterprise" email system where you could only exchange email with coworkers or an "enterprise" phone system where you can only call people inside the company. I'd never use it. If, however, you mean just using normal IM with co-workers, it's become the primary way I communicate with off-site team members.
- Ken Sheppardson
IM is indispensable in the office. I've worked in large companies, with customers and co-workers around the world, and couldn't function without it. Friends at smaller companies tend to say the same - so many people being cut means the people who are left have to do more, and usually do it all at the same time, and IM is an effective tool for quick, to the point communication.
- Chris Rogers
Use it all the time. We started using MSN messenger but we've now switched to a Jabber-based enterprise version for all in-house comms. Email is my primary comm tool but IM follows a close second.
- Philip Tomlinson
I'm currently testing deployments of Office Communications Server.. It looks great, but corporations should NEVER use the public ones. If it's becoming a useful tool internally then deploy internally otherwise your corporate convos are being spooled into MS or Googles databases that log them all.
- alphaxion
That is the way I feel alphaxion - you need a secure IM IF you are using it for secure, internal communications. That was a concern of mine on the campaigns I worked for.
- Nation Hahn
I'm all for businesses takes steps to secure their IM traffic. As long as they're consistent, and also consider their policy RE public web-based email systems like Gmail and/or hosted email solutions where they're using POP/IMAP to pull mail from some little ISP the CEO's nephew recommended.
- Ken Sheppardson
I was personally surprised when I joined the campaigns to find IMing to be so common. Although from many other businesses I have seen since then it seems to be a fairly common practice.
- Nation Hahn
I'm waiting to see Cisco's Jabber roll out in an appliance or peripheral edition.
- Jay Cuthrell
What other IMing clients do people recommend?
- Nation Hahn
We started using Office Communicator last year. At first it was just us IT folks, but we're done testing. I sometimes use it to respond to email, or even instead of sending an initial email (because the last thing I want is more email to clean up). Sometimes I use it to communicate with co-workers who are on the phone, or rather than calling. I even have the WinMo client.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
At a call center I used to work at, EPop was used until I arrived and Omni-Pod was used until I left. Omni-Pod was ridiculously handy and it seemed like it was fairly well self contained. They moved to communicator because it seemed whatever setup they had with Omni-Pod was not large enough for the company.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
Hutch, that's wrong IMHO. Journalism is not what about this. I mean, that's just reporting witnessed facts nothing more... even the folks in the buildings (in the background) saw that plane. Sorry, I don't believe that This may be called "journalism"
- directeur
directeur: you're wrong. That is EXACTLY what journalism is.
- Robert Scoble
Robert definitely NOT! Why do people go to universities and schools? I could have been on that plane an twitted this, am I a journalist for having that "bad" chance? I don't think so
- directeur
directeur: journalists do NOT need to go to universities and schools. There is NO prerequisite of such to being a journalist. (I did go to journalism school at San Jose State University). Schools teach you law and how to do it better, but that's not a pre-requisite.
- Robert Scoble
directeur: to be schooled in traditional journalism. the old way.
- Chris Johnson
Chris: I've met plenty of professional journalists who never went to journalism school.
- Robert Scoble
Robert and directeur: Twitter is the reporter and Tweeters are the sources. As Twitter is coldblooded and unslanted (ideally) it's a better reporter than most college trained journalists. I could give a damn about good writing, I want truthful information.
- Matthew DeVries
Robert, and Chris, still not convinced sorry. Journalism is about ethics, art, and a science. That's not simply reporting things. Even reporters learn what to report and how to do it
- directeur
directeur: Consider the various purposes of journalism. One includes "witnessing facts" and reporting them. It need not be a complete story with word on where the flight data recorder is, and histories of US Airways flight safety. Simple pics like this provide a lot of info: intact, alive, where the passengers are currently, who is doing the rescuing, etc.
- Hutch Carpenter
directeur: you are so wrong. So so so wrong. Did you go to journalism school? I did and you have no clue. Journalism is the act of capturing and reporting the news. THIS is journalism.
- Robert Scoble
Sensationalist reporting of events is different than in-depth analysis of events, the history that caused them, and the impact they may have on the future. Unfortunately, both get lumped under "news," and that is a shame, but in my mind the latter is journalism, and describing a plane crash certainly is not.
- Nadine Schaeffer
I think there is an important distinction to be made here. Witnessing an event is not journalism. Journalism implies standards and professionalism. Let's not lose sight of standards as our methods of reporting change with the Web and citizens participating in news gathering.
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
There are plenty of great artists who never went to art school, exceptional web developers with English degrees, and mathematicians & engineers who flunked high school.
- Tom Harrison
Nadine, Rod - if you see a write-up of the city council meeting in the paper, without in-depth analysis, what do you consider that?
- Hutch Carpenter
Robert, okay. You're right for I'm just a computer scientist and you surely know these things better than me. What I meant in fact is that "journalism" is more than reporting. that was my humble opinion
- directeur
Rod: bullshit. The only difference there is getting paid to capture the images.
- Robert Scoble
Hutch: News, not journalism, and a waste of paper at that :P
- Nadine Schaeffer
Robert: No i mean they go to university to learn the old outdated way of journalism. The old retired way! :)
- Chris Johnson
I would argue that *true* journalism is a simple, disinterested reporting of the facts. Too often, "journalists" give their own slant to stories (right and left) turning it into commentary, though still labeled as journalism. This guy truly is doing journalism.
- Joey Gibson
Rod - A credentialed journalist shoving a microphone in the face of a witness is however? I get the line you are trying to point out... but analysis is only a part of journalism... sometimes it is just showing what is happening.
- Brian Roy
directeur: That is ONE form of journalism, and we have been seeing that decline for years. I do like well written peices too ... but this is the way the world is going. There will be a place for both i think.
- Chris Johnson
Robert, so you think someone who covers tech can be called a journalist who accepts corporate sponsorship or owns stock in tech companies. No. There are journalistic standards, or there is no credibility.
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
Directeur, consider the distinction between 'journalism' and 'journalist'. Journalism is an activity that anyone can engage in, just as anyone can engage in accounting, or play a game of soccer. A journalist usually refers to someone who does that for a living, but note that there is no requirement that they have received formal training. Some livelihoods do require formal training and certification, but others do not.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Rod Bauer: You are joking right??? You really think modern journalists (if that is what you can call them) are independent of corporate/government influence and that they have that level of ethics. come on ... what planet do you live on.
- Chris Johnson
Rod: Where does the advertising-support, often sensationalist evening news fall?
- Tom Harrison
As Chris said, there is a decline of true journalism, and it saddens me. All the tweets in the world do not make a single well written editorial from the New York Times or financial analysis from The Economist.
- Nadine Schaeffer
Chris. Standards are goals, and of course not all achieve them. Do you want to throw out standards? There are many corrupt politicians but do you want to stop holding them to a standard of honesty?
- Rod Bauer
But the point is that you need not be employed as a 'journalist' in order to engage in the activity called 'journalism'. As for the ethics and standards comments here, I will note that for the most part journalism does not have the attributes of a profession (such as a required code of ethics and a certification board: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...), so it really is actually a trade.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Tom. There is lots of "journalism" that falls short. Far too much these days, and that is why journalism has such a bad rap now. It's a fucking hard business to get right. But that's why it is so important. Twitter is great for breaking news, but it doesn't replace standards, investigation, and seeking out other sides of the story.
- Rod Bauer
Rod: I certianly do think they should uphold a certian standard. I just dont see your link between being called a journalist and how that somehow implies a level of standards.
- Chris Johnson
I don't know if referring to them as "journalists" is right or wrong. But here's a thought. People who took these pictures, or tweeted this are sources. The role of the "journalist" in the old media isn't relevant - or has been eliminated here. The middle man/ moderator is gone. Sources reach the audience directly unfiltered - the audience (on twitter, FF) as a whole now consume, authenticate and validate the story.
- Kamath (नमः)
I would welcome a "citizen fireman" to help save my burning house, but I would prefer a professionally trained fireman with his/her knowledge and experience. I also would not first choose a "citizen doctor" a "citizen lawyer" or a "citizen airplane pilot."
- Rod Bauer
So although the folks who reported this *are* not journalists, what they did *is* actually journalism. Which leaves aside how well or poorly they did it.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Michael. I think the word "witness" suits this situation better than "journalist."
- Rod Bauer
Consider the following parallel: 'Publishing' vs. 'publisher'.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Rod, sticking with verbs, he didn't just 'witness' this, he also 'reported' it. Would you be more comfortable with calling what he did 'reporting' rather than 'journalism'? It's a fuzzy line.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Michael is right. This guy was NOT just a witness. Witnesses watch. Journalists journal and report. This guy did journalism as good as any other out there. The only difference between him and a "pro" today is that a pro would have had a higher resolution camera. Absolutely no other difference.
- Robert Scoble
Or perhaps you would be more comfortable calling this 'photo-journalism' rather than 'journalism'.
- Michael R. Bernstein
I always carry a couple of cameras with me, even to the bathroom in my own house. Just in case something big happens, I want to be ready. Ready to Document the Disaster. Support the Survivors (via a record of events). and Sell the Story. once the all clear is given....I'm still pretty much disaster free and don't have too many pictures of people trapped under parking structures....so maybe i'll leave a camera behind next time....
- Morgan Haley
Michael. Your semantic distinction is valid and thought-worthy. My concern is primarily about standards and authority. Our problems in those areas have always been huge and the Web complicates them. Maybe the Web will make them better...I'm a Web guy, so I'm optimistic. I fear that in our rush to get news ultra-fast, we will throw out the best of what the guys in the newsrooms (the best of them) have been striving to refine in the name of "journalism."
- Rod Bauer
I applaud Morgan's diligence, but I hope he doesn't document any bathroom disasters.
- Kevin Fox
Rod, if you're a web-guy, then... what do you think of the distinction between 'programming' and 'programmer'? Do you support efforts to professionalize computer programming, up to and including professional certification, in order to promote standards and authority?
- Michael R. Bernstein
Morgan. LOL. The day you don't take the camera to the bathroom is the day the plane emergency lands on the roof and you end up with an airline hostess sitting in your lap.
- Rod Bauer
So historically... how much would the average professional news photographer make for taking this sort of shot, which now seems to be proliferating everywhere, mostly without attribution, let alone compensation?
- Ken Sheppardson
Absolutely amazing. What this illustrates most to me is that "people," regular "people" are realizing and understanding their growing influence in the media spectrum. This guy could have done nothing. He took the time to shoot it, and tell the story via Twitter---to share the story. He's obviously aware of the power of Twitter and other social media platforms. He has influence and has a voice---everyone does---but not everyone knows how to use it...but that's quickly changing.
- Jennifer Windrum
how will Janis Krums be compensated for news agencies using his image? does he give up rights when he publishes it to twitter?
- Neil Bernhart
Michael. They're not the same. Journalism has a social responsibility that doesn't exist in computer programming. In that sense journalism is closer to the practice of medicine. Journalism at any level can't escape social responsibility. In limited areas programming could benefit from certification (security, for example) but otherwise the term programming will also always apply to non-professional activity.
- Rod Bauer
TwitPic should grant Janis Krums stock immediately, BTW.
- Ken Sheppardson
Whoah. Rod, you are *so* wrong. I will give you counter examples from both trades: First, I don't think you'll find much social responsibility in the entertainment section of your newspaper. Second, what about the programmer responsible for working on the software that operates a pacemaker, nuclear reactor, or radiation therapy machine?
- Michael R. Bernstein
Great pic. As for "journalism", if I tell you it's partly cloudy, does that make me a meteorologist?
- Andrew Smith
Andrew: No, in the same way that telling me a plane just crashed doesn't make you a psychic. But both tasks make you a journalist of varying degrees.
- Kevin Fox
What's messed up is that I'm actually more nervous when I forget to bring a camera somewhere. What a geek huh? What a dorky wimpy chicken geek.
- Morgan Haley
Michael: a programmer needs *knowledge* and that knowledge is the "merit". Someone who reports doesn't need anything. Or maybe eyes and a mobile? (So, Poor blind folks without a mobile! vae victis)
- directeur
Kevin: I *knew* you were going to write that. <psychic/> :)
- Andrew Smith
Michale. There's a difference between a job having to meet standards because that job could affect society and a profession that has standards. Sure, a programming contract for a nuclear reactor has to meet standards, but programming in general doesn't. I disagree with you about the newspaper entertainment section. I've been a newspaper arts critic. Even though much of what I wrote was my opinion, I still felt (and was held to) standards of truth, accurate sources, etc. It is fuzzier tho', in those sections
- Rod Bauer
directeur: a journalist needs one thing: distribution. That used to be through newspaper, radio, TV. Today it's Twitter and friendfeed. That's one thing that separates "journalists" from "people with cameras." Lots of people probably took pictures today, but how many of their photos or videos have you seen? This guy understood how to get distribution. THAT is key today.
- Robert Scoble
Merriam-Webster clears things up: [http://www.merriam-webster.com/diction...] "1.c - an academic study concerned with the collection and editing of news or the management of a news medium" ... "2.b - writing characterized by a direct presentation of facts or description of events without an attempt at interpretation"
- MikeAmundsen
'Programming in general' is well on it's way to affecting more people than journalism, though. Traffic lights? Voting Machines? The guy who was paid to put back doors into voting machines? The developers *at* Twitter that made this story possible? Virus and other malware writers? Google? "Windows isn't done until Lotus won't run"? Whoever writes those horrible content filters installed...
- Michael R. Bernstein
Actually, distribution is still newspaper, radio, TV. Most of the country and world have never heard of Twitter or FF. CNN.com would be a more appropriate web analogy.
- Nadine Schaeffer
So by definition from Mike 2.b "...without an attempt at interpretation" it was journalism right up to the point in the tweet where he says "Crazy".
- Andrew Smith
anybody can be in the right place in the right time and twitter a couple of sentences, maybe post a pic. do they deserve awards? hell no. doesn't mean they can actually write an article.
- Terry O'Fee
Terry: many a Pulitzer Prize has been won by someone who captured a world-changing photo that weren't professionals. During the earthquake in 1989 I handed a camera to someone who had never used one before and taught him how to shoot -- he made two award-winning photos that day that we ran on the front of the newspaper.
- Robert Scoble
a photographer and a journalist, i'm talking about writing a proper well thought out article. don't get me wrong, this might be a good way for some people to get into whether writing, or photography. but in the end he's going back to work tomorrow with just a lot of followers who will probably unfollow him in a few weeks time when he tweets like normal. this is a great way of getting news out, i grant you that but I don't know if a tweet entry is really worthy of a walkley award just yet....
- Terry O'Fee
Terry: well, I'm sure we will see one photo shared via the real-time web that will win a Pulitzer at some point. The Pulitzer committee doesn't care if you are a 'pro' or not. They just look at the impact your photo has on the world. Pulitzers get handed out because you were "there" and captured the right moment. Last year's winner: http://www.pulitzer.org/works... -- this photo taken today will certainly be considered.
- Robert Scoble
If there are indeed journalistic standards (cf. doctors and lawyers), where can I go to take the test?
- Mistletoe Glen
Glen: exactly. No test and no standards. This whole argument is bulls**t. If you journal and report news you are a journalist. Period.
- Robert Scoble
journalists get paid though. how is this leading you into a paying job, is what im trying to say..
- Terry O'Fee
In my mind what the people did on site is report. They reported what they saw and what happened. A journalist will now go take the time to interview the people, get the names right, find out what happened, stick with the story, and try to put the situation in some sort of context. Twitter etc will always be better at reporting. Journalism takes time and resources most people don't have, yet both can be done by anyone. Punditry is what most people end up doing in practice.
- Todd Hoff
exactly! telling the world is one thing. putting some effort into your work?
- Terry O'Fee
This photo was better than the ones cnn.com and bbc news online had three hours ago when I first saw this pic mentioned on twitter.
- Ian Fogg
Ian - I don't mean photography. Photography in news is a whole other kettle o' fish. (i just hope future news isn't taken on a shitty 2MP hypephone :P)
- Terry O'Fee
Terry - hadn't read your previous comments. I was just commenting on the photo itself (Friendfeed desperately needs threaded commenting to avoid this kind of crossed wires). What I like is the sense of being there, the fact that it was clearly taken very early on before the plane sunk in the water and most passengers had been rescued. The pro shots on cnn.com and BBC earlier looked like they were taken from high up from a helicopter or a tall building -> the photo journalists should have found a fast boat.
- Ian Fogg
oh, i agree with you. these phones these days (i mean good ones) can make some amazing pictures. my n95 has the same power as my normal camera :P
- Terry O'Fee
When the smoke clears it will be a good time to buy.
- Rolf Schewe
..doesn't, I mean, as this is said to be a <6mo leave.
- Ken Sheppardson
Immutable Law: sell on good news, buy on bad.
- Carter Rabasa
I have to agree with Duncan. Steve IS Appl. He has done nothing to groom a replacement (as was evident at this last macworld). Steve is a total megalomaniac I think he secretly wants Apple to fail when he leaves so that he, not Apple, will always be remembered as the great one.
- Tac Anderson
Ken -- do you seriously believe Jobs will be back -- ever?
- Brian Sullivan
When was the announcement? Did Apple wait after the closing bell?
- Bryan R. Adams
Wow Tac - I assume you've had a lot of one on one time with Steve... maybe hanging out at his house... What other intimate details can you provide based on your intimate relationship?
- Brian Roy
Ken, a 7% drop today screams it, I hope Jobs gets well but they should have taken a slow easing in approach as opposed to this pr disaster, just wait till tomorrow stock is gonna tank, not a good plan they just crapped on their shareholders.
- adolfo foronda
Also, don't forget that Apple has $20-some-billion in cash equivalents and no debt. That's almost 1/3 of it's market cap at $85/share.
- LogEx
Tomorrow's opening for the Nasdaq is going to be fascinating. CNBC is going to get a lot of eyeballs. My two will be there to watch the trainwreck.
- Rolf Schewe
you're wrong rob, apple has peaked and this won't help
- Bob Sonin
Brian Roy, you're right I was way too harsh on Steve.
- Tac Anderson
I have to say, with the greatest respect, that this might have been the silliest post you've blogged, reminiscent of Blodget in his 'prime'. You come across as a fanboi (which I am too) not a rational investor. Please Robert, stick to enthusiasm about the shiny shiny new stuff...
- jeremy ettinghausen
His health issues are not news. Anyone market maker worth their salt would have factored this into the share price before today's events. There maybe a run because of the"idiots" but it will recover quickly.
- Mel Buckpitt
Duncan: it's too late to sell at this point. The stock has already been hammered and you are just going to sell at the low.
- Robert Scoble
Steve Jobs has done alot for the company but you are a moron if you sell the stock just based on his lack of presence. He is not a one man show.
- Shaun Haney
I believe there is a certian element of Apple == Steve. Will the company be the same without him? I doubt it. If he micromanaged and controlled everything as many have said there will be a decline in product vision and quality. Maybe they should have had other people sharing the public face of the company for a while longer than they did (what was it 3 weeks?). I cant name another apple exec who i have actually seen keynote anything.

Having said all that ... i wish him all the best and hope he gets well.

@brian, not at all. I'm just saying that the stock price had a premium built around Jobs. The outstanding question though is how much? Robert, you are correct, I hadn't looked at the stock price when I wrote the comment (was out, so via iPhone), but given the 6% drop in after hours trading, you'd think twice about dumping tomorrow. Having said that though, full trading gives a better picture, and it might go lower yet
- Duncan Riley
Duncan - If I'm paying a premium on a stock because of 1 employee than I am an idiot.
- Brian Roy
Duncan: it might go down more, sure, and might go down again on Friday after they announce their results. But this news is out there and you won't be able to sell in time now to take advantage of this news. So, selling now is idiotic unless you think Apple won't continue to release interesting products now that Steve is gone for a while (at minimum).
- Robert Scoble
a smart investor, would've sold it the minute the announcement was made; and would buy it back in a day or 2 when it bottoms out - but AAPL stock is too volatile for me anyhow, I don't have time to be watching it every day.
- clarke thomas
clarke: it was impossible to sell because APPL was halted before the news was made.
- Robert Scoble
110% agree with Clarke. Robert, true, it's too late to truly take advantage of the news, but likewise we still don't know how big the Jobs premium was in the stock. At a bet though I'd still think AAPL is a good bet: any company with zero debt and a reported $25b in cash reserves is always going to make a decent investment in the current economic climate
- Duncan Riley
agree with Chris; if you're going to sell sell when the market opens, it won't bottom out tomorrow, that will take 2-3 days, till it's a comfortable volatility.
- clarke thomas
The stock price reflects perceptions about the company, not the state of the company. It's not bad if the stock drops, because that's just an opportunity to buy for bulls, who would hold their shares anyway. I'd be happy to buy Apple at less than today's price. But what happens tomorrow, except as a speculative bet, is meaningless to Apple's continued success or failure.
- Mitch Ratcliffe
You're an idiot anyway, what does selling stock have to do with anything :P
- Bwana ☠
if you don't understand corporate finance 101 you shouldn't be giving a skeric of investment advice, especially in these times
- Bob Sonin
since when does corporate finance have anything to do w/ stock price. Just because company is doing well or poor, has a minimal effect on its price. It's all based on speculation, what people thing it will or won't do in N time.
- clarke thomas
Apple has so much momentum and a great management team (as post pointed out), even if Jobs can't return, they will continue to innovate and remain successful. Also, re: succession plan, I bet Steve has a to do list for Apple for the next 10 years ;-) So the stock will tank for a while, but the company is likely to remain strong.
- Alistair (alpinefolk)
Given that Apple has high-priced products, I'd think that doesn't bode well in tough economic times. E.g., sales at Tiffany are much worse than at Wal-Mart. iPhone sales are falling off--a $75 phone bill is kind of a luxury. Jobs' leave of absence could just be the catalyst for the stock to move faster in the direction it was heading anyway.
- Joe Knapp
Bwana: yeah, right. Every investor reads friendfeed and my blog, right? Hah! Or, maybe everyone who cared about Steve Jobs' leadership already sold their shares in Apple, like how Fred Wilson did last week.
- Robert Scoble
Hey, let the lemmings sell so that I can get in!!!!
- Troy Malone
Yep - trading at 83.38. Quite good, considering all the doom and gloom last night.

"It is thought that ice circles are formed when surface ice gathers in the center of a body of water rather than the edges. A slow moving river current can create a slow turning eddy, which rotates, forming an ice disc. Very slowly the edges are ground down until a gap is formed between the eddy and the surrounding ice."

IE's been a glorified bug fix since MS relabeled it from Mosaic, Robert - no secret there. :) I'm loving Chrome.

WebKit is a really good rendering engine. I've always secretly wished IE8 would use WebKit as their rendering engine and scrap IE rendering, and somehow incorporate ActiveX and all of the IE features into it, since WebKit is open-source, not tied to a specific competitor (as opposed to Gecko and Firefox) and is fast and stable. – Have to agree about Google Chrome as well. It's a great browser. As much as I love Safari, I wish Chrome would come to Mac sooner :)
- Mark Bao
6. Google Chrome's search integration is magic. Start typing something and it figures out what you want. IE8 waits for you to finish, then brings up a boring web page.

Robert, I really like Chrome too. The universal address/search/history bar is the future of browsing. There are only a small % of sites that do not work with Chrome... usually old school corporations, such as ones that I have to pay bills online at. Grr. Works 99.8% of the time for me otherwise.

I just installed the Windows 7 beta. I fired up IE 8 and it didn't correctly render a nonprofit's Web site I administer as a volunteer (www.spauldingcenter.org). IE 8 didn't correctly render some of the CSS. I installed Chrome and Chrome got it right. IE 8 is obviously not yet ready for release.

I don't care about Internet Explorer any more. I switched to Firefox + Foxmarks, and solved a nagging problem - synchronization of bookmarks across multiple Windows *and* OS X machines - that the 'softies *still* haven't managed to solve, despite wasting a few developer-centuries on Live Mesh.

I like the speed/lightness of Chrome, however i dont think it will be big anytime soon with anyone other than techies. Doesnt run many addins/plugins etc... Unlikely any enterprise will adopt it either. Its a great reference app.

Chrome certainly is clean and renders fast, but until the experience can be customized via extensions like Firefox, there is no one way I can make it my primary. I just loaded Win. 7 on my laptop and the only thing I ported over from any of my other machines was my FEBE.
- George Rogers
Important point for me is that Chrome opens more of the monitor for the content on the page, not for toolbars that i do not need while browsing a page. no loss of functionality without the toolbar.
- Jeff DiStanlo
I wonder how many people even know what tn3270 is used for :) I know I do all too well.

Any Flock 2.0 users here? If Chrome comes out for the Mac, I may take a look as well - but Firefox/Flock has been great for me for now.
- Erich Miller
@Robert: Maybe simplicity wasn't the right word..."ease of use" might be a better term. I think that FF's layout is not as radically different from the browsers I grew up with (IE & Netscape), as Chrome seems to be...maybe that's why I find it simpler to use. Having said that, Chrome is by no means complex, just not as intuitive as FF. As you mentioned, the plug-ins add to the ease of use. It seems you can get a FireFox plug-in for anything.
- Charlie Flowers
BTW, have you tried FF's AutoPager plug-in. That thing is amazing! It "automatically loads the next page of a site inline when you reach the end of the current page for infinite scrolling of content"...it's perfect for things like Twitter, Google, and yes it works for FriendFeed too. :D
- Charlie Flowers

ctrl+t takes forever on IE8, and for what? A blank tab. I like Chrome's approach
- Andrew Smith
Firefox's is simple and extendable. Firefox' strength comes from its pluggability and ease of developing new plugins. Chrome needs to beat that.
- Angsuman Chakraborty
Chrome needs to support Linux before it can even think of replacing Firefox. Chromium port of Chrome on Linux isn't very stable.
- Angsuman Chakraborty
firefox plugins are the new activeX. there's too much functionality i use for me to shift *now*. i *do* like chrome, though.

- Nathan Chase
i think i'll stick with firefox. so much more you can do with it..
- Terry O'Fee
Chrome is fast (unlike IE), has a very minimal UI (also unlike IE), and you can move tabs to other windows. I have never been able to get Firefox to open new tabs next to the tab they're opened from, instead of at the far right, plus I don't really care about extensions. Plus, I've never had any issues with Flash. The only problem is that my school email won't work in Chrome (but that's minor). Chrome wins for me.

Robert - how is the performance of IE8 compared to Chrome and Firefox? Personally, I'd be using Chrome if I had my add-ons and greasemonkey scripts. I love Chrome's mult-tasking / memory management - very nice
- Susan Beebe
@Imperator, Firefox's UI can be slimmed down, and you can fix the tab issue with Tab Mix Plus. Also, Firefox 3.1 is faster than Chrome.
- Tanath
how bout: Chrome is CSS compliant? IE8 isn't, I know this by experience
- Duncan Riley
@Nathan -- as far as I know, IE8 separated tabs into different processes first....
- Toph Tucker
I think FriendFeed should put a comment button at the bottom of the comments... that said, Opera is the fastest, but it has a few shortcomings. I use FireFox or Chrome depending on what PC I'm at. Some sites only work in IE.
- Gus
Google Chrome uses your screen real estate more efficiently
- Aad 't Hart
Chrome focuses on the web and not on the browser and that's what a browser's supposed to do.
- Rohit
May be when there are basic extensions available for Chrome then it will be fair to compare with Firefox. For now, I don't see Chrome that useful, even though it's clean, a bit faster and provides more screen space. After a couple of days of using Chrome, I switched to Firefox as I felt less productive without the powerful extensions in Firefox.
- Amar Shah
When Chrome has an extension like Better GReader, TabMixPlus, and NoScript, then I'll switch, but FF has everything I need with the extensions. NoScript is about the ONLY addon I absolutely need to use for security of my computer.

I agree. Chrome focuses on opening fast, which is critical for impatient people like me. Firefox and IE are way too slow.

WebKit can do CSS3 gradients, and I have only seen it in WordPress for creating actual images with gradients. Chrome is the future indeed! Extensions? heh, I use javascript bookmarklets to do my bidding! Chromes bookmark manager is more powerful than I expected. Passwords can be imported from FF but there is no backup option yet.
- Web20Critic
Chrome is really promising, but still incomplete imo. Being a web developer, I have deep connections with firefox plug-ins like FireBug (with Yslow), dev. toolbar and a couple more. But looking at the future, I think the final round of the browser wars will be between Safari and Chrome (ofc IE will still have at least 50% market) because Firefox gets slower and more agonizing with every new release, and lacks the support Apple and Google offers for Safari/Chrome
- Onur Cengiz
If chrome crashes, report it! Make a note of what you were doing and blog it, microshare it, post it on the chromium blog etc. This way all of us can help make it work for us! Nice thread for tech support, Mr Scoble!

John, I am using the regular Technet link: http://bit.ly/NJJb If you're seeing "Download Now" I assume you have gotten past the Live ID logon, profile update and gotten your Product key? The download uses an ActiveX control or Java applet download manager. Assuming you are on Windows :-) try your download in IE, and allow the ActiveX control to install.
- Karim
I have Windows 7 beta running on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor 4000+ with 2 Gig of Ram and it runs better then Vista Home Premium did. The only issue is I can not get my Netgear SC101 NAS box to recognize. Does anyone have any ideas?
- Rob Cairns
"windows", "winner" - is this an example of #15, say something outrageous ;-)
- Neil Saunders
Peter Simard: That's awesome! I'm sure you backed up first, but were quite relieved it all went well. :) Rob Cairns: I didn't even know the SC101 worked with Vista in the first place... I gave up on that thing so long ago. That is probably the only piece of hardware I've ever regretted buying. Though it sounds like you've had a good experience with it if you're still using it. I'd say wait a few days and see if anybody comes up with a solution. I took a cursory glance and didn't find any info...
- Dr. Apps
from twhirl
Robert - Using it since late yesterday. On two boxes, more stable than the original final releases of Windows NT and/or Windows 2000. More drivers supported up front than in Vista. Think MS learned something and the download limit drop will bring a lot of embedded techies. It's a win.
- Charlie Anzman
Thanks for being on the bleeding edge, just about to load the Windows 7 beta myself.. Good to know it upgraded properly for you.
- TechMama Beth Blecherman
I'm going to download it tonight Can't wait!
- Michael Fidler
It was a long upgrade for me... but overall I like it.
- Jason Womick
Been very happy with Windows 7 so far. Many subtle improvements add up to a much better product than Vista.
- Jim Bednarz
I am happy with Windows 7. Fresh install was effortless, but after the install and adding all possible board drivers, four "System Interrupts" entries remain yellow. At least the LAN connectors worked immediately.
- Robert Miller
I put win7 on a Toshiba Satellite a65 from 2003 and it works better than xp did
- Todd Loren Sinclair
Stephen : The upgrade was painless 90 minutes or so and a couple of reboots later. The only issue I had as previously mentioned was my Netgear Sc 101 issue - it did work on Vista. It expires in August
- Rob Cairns
Upgraded both my machines at home. No upgrade issues noticed. 7GB less on system partition too. Its great!
- Chris Johnson
Can someone say what the difference between 7 and Vista actually is?
- Sam Pullara
Sam: IMO, 7 is leaner and meaner. Some usability enhancements but the big story to me is that it runs better on lesser hardware than Vista. Better graphical memory management for windows and less overall bloat. That's the high level. Try it. I ran an early build on a netbook in October and was impressed.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Sam, that's like asking what the difference between 95 and 98 is. Like 98, Windows 7 is a refinement of the OS which proceeded it. It's smaller, it's faster, it's more hardware friendly. The bulk of the changes are quite subtle but are very effective such as the UI for connecting to wireless networks, the new Aero features of the taskbar (left-click and drag up on a taskbar entry for new options, for example), far better UAC handling and configuration, a more intuitive start menu, and so forth.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Man, this is just embarrassing for Palm. The Pre is such a BLATANT iPhone clone. Even the icons look the same. Kind of sad, really. It seems there's no more creativity at Palm...
- Josh Bancroft
Have we really gotten to the point where anything that's hand-sized with a full screen and any kind of icons is instantly dubbed an 'iPhone ripoff'? Sigh.
- Ken Sheppardson
It feels like they are trying to catch up but I need to be wowed to consider them again. They need to innovate!
- TheSleepyGeek
Josh, I disagree when you say embarrassing. I think this looks pretty damn good

Robert - Live video streaming of the announcement is not permitted.

Palm made the same mistake Apple did with their first iPhone. No 3G.

Business leaders like this have a responsibility to try to inspire others. Now, if I worked for any of his Virgin enterprises, was an investor in any of his companies, or a third-party affiliate or distributor, I wouldn't feel any better about the state of the economy. I am always one to appreciate the straight shooter, but when it comes to the state of the economy, can you please not sound like Chicken Little? I: want to have some confidence.

- Robert Scoble
It's it just more addictive, or is it more useful as well? It's important to realize that there's a difference.

friendfeed is the begging to something very exciting and new. Real-time web.

Will this help business or something that's fun only? How can I get on the list to get a beta invite? I can't imagine something being better than FriendFeed - is that really possible??
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
I think the line between fun and Business is shrinking. We already see this with corporations using twitter internally.
- Steven (optionshiftk)
No, we are in El Granada, CA. Maryam's friend needs a new cell phone and now is going to buy an iphone

- Alex Scoble
Hahaha I thought you said you where in "times square" ooops...wrong city... I thought you were at home. iPhone is amazing...so glad you persuaded me to get one!! NO other phone even compares...seriously, this product sells itself!!
- Susan Beebe
If said owner gets their groove on friendfeed, you may have a new person of interest to follow, and therein lies thy reward :)
- Micah Wittman
Susan: we are near @hardaway's house in El Granada. Google's voice searchis freaking cool.
- Robert Scoble
As much as I'd like a phone with a real browser, I'll be damned before I ever pay the Apple tax or use a phone without a QWERTY keyboard...Blackberry for life!
- Alex Scoble
Robert Google voice search is hawt! One of my all time *fav* apps. Show them Google maps - Streetview ...show them their own house...that always freaks people out! :D
- Susan Beebe
Alex, have you seen the T-Mobile's G1 yet? :)
- imabonehead
Alex - if you want a REAL browser and a qwerty then you need a G1, :P
- Tad
Alex - I was a hardcore crackberry addict with my Curve, etc. but dude the iPhone totally owns the BB platform now... no joke. I can type FASTER on the iPhone than the BB... no sh*t! Plus that damn little screen is a freakin joke... Robert is right...he should kick YOU in the balls! hehehe LOL :)
- Susan Beebe
No...I haven't...unfortunately they are only on T-Mobile. Then again I'm not particularly authoritative on the subject of phones...I don't even own one...my BB is from work.
- Alex Scoble
Alex: why do you need a keyboard? Oh yeah, you don't have voice search!
- Robert Scoble
Alex, me too! I've got to touch and feel the keyboard. I can use it without looking at it; with iPhone no chance. Finally a Blackberry user. :-)
- Moushumi Kabir
How ironic that BB got rid of the keyboard
- Peter Warnock
Yeah, you can bet that I won't be getting a Storm anytime soon, Peter.
- Alex Scoble
I got a BB Storm tonight. Wanted an iPhone but was edged out by my older brother who is actually running our shop. After watching Ed Dale run a multi-million dollar business, and, his house, from his iPhone, while traveling from Melbourne to San Fran, I was convinced. First peek into this BB tonight; too complicated, non intuitive, for what it can do. Web access is painful.
- Ed Shahzade /NextInstinct
Bold is pretty neat. Storm, didn't like the feel of it.
- Moushumi Kabir
i am an iphone convert. onscreen keyboard is amazing if you just trust it. the faster i type the better it is. acuracy is not really needed (within reason of course). i didnt believe it until i tried it.
- Chris Johnson
Didn't you say you were logging out for the evening? Welcome back! :-)
- Jesse Stay
@Tom Totally agree, but unfortunately it has a lot of clout thanks to its userbase.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
what I don't get is why Microsoft Passport/LiveID was evil and nobody wanted to use it, while Facebook connect is all of a sudden interesting for everybody....
- Daniele Muscetta
Microsoft was ahead of its time with Passport/Live ID, and also, everyone hates a winner. If you ask me, Live ID is better than Facebook Connect, though, because Microsoft's value isn't in accumulating all your life's data the way that Facebook's is.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
exactly. I agree 100% with what you just wrote :-) but LiveID auth license does not make it easy to use it the way facebook does, tho.
- Daniele Muscetta
Apparently Live ID does OpenID now, though, which if more users and developers knew about, might make integrating Live ID a little less annoying, legally.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
@Chris Charabaruk, yes it does and that should mean 700million or so people who already have an OpenID. Not a bad number :)
- Chris Johnson
Thing is, while so many people have an OpenID (or several OpenIDs) how many of them know about it? How many know how to use it, and are comfortable with it? I'd guess perhaps 1-3%, off the top of my head, know enough about OpenID to make use of it. Now, how many Facebook users would know what do do if they saw the FB icon and a link saying "log in with Facebook" when they visit a site? You say anything less than 75% I'll laugh my ass off.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
exactly. Facebook is easy to understand for consumers. And so Passport/LiveID has been for a while. On the opposite, OpenID is cumbersome to use and too "geeky" that I don't even get it completely - I can imagine what the average user would do with it...
- Daniele Muscetta
Chris, how many people with accounts on Google, or Yahoo, or Facebook, or Microsoft Live would fail to recognize the "login using" OpenID button Clickpass provides? Example at https://ourdoings.com/person...
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Seeing what clicking on the bar does, I have the feeling that people will be more likely to use one of the other login options Clickpass provides, rather than OpenID. While OpenID tops the dropdown list from the circle button, the page you can get from clicking puts prominence on everything BUT OpenID. As it is, it allows, but does not encourage, the use or comprehension of OpenID.

"When Mr. Bush officially takes his leave in three weeks (in reality, he checked out long ago), most Americans will be content to sigh good riddance. I disagree. I don’t think he should be allowed to slip quietly out of town. There should be a great hue and cry — a loud, collective angry howl, demonstrations with signs and bullhorns and fiery speeches — over the damage he’s done to this country."

The worst, the most incompetent and the most destructive presidency in American history by far, yes. But Bob Herbert needs to discuss the central role of "liberals" (neoliberals, neoconservatives) at The New York Times (and other mainstream media outlets) in enabling this disaster. Bush was their slave, not their master.
- Sean McBride
One great thing Bush has done has been to fund/instigate more national parks than almost any other president. That surprised me. I dont like the guy or agree with most of what else he has done however :) Goodness knows how long it will take to repair the damage he has caused.

"The president would give the wealthy and the powerful virtually everything they wanted. He would throw sand into the regulatory apparatus and help foster the most extreme income disparities since the years leading up to the Great Depression. Once again he was lighting a fire. This time the flames would engulf the economy and, as with Iraq, bring catastrophe."
