The best part of the entire Fair this year (and the reason I agree to do such a stressful and ridiculous job year after year): a young exhibitor (5-6 years old) came to pick up her ribbons, one of which was a Best in Show. She didn't know that it also came with a trophy.
When I handed her the trophy, her face lit up and she exclaimed "I get a trophy?! Oh my gosh! Mom, I get a trophy! And I didn't even hafta show goats or nothing!" Best. Moment. Ever.

Her mom mentioned that the little girl really wanted to win a trophy of some sort because they'd watched the kids out in livestock winning trophies for their animals. It was pure serendipity that I was able to make her day. ♥ After they left, I told my mom "I bet she sleeps with that trophy tonight." :)

I wish I had it on video. It was awesome. She walked around with it clutched to her chest, whispering "A trophy of my very own! A trophy for me!"

There were several other great moments yesterday with exhibitors picking up their ribbons and entries. One was a lady who had only entered two cut flowers, one of which didn't place but the other won 1st in its class. She was so taken by that. She said "I don't even need the money I won. This ribbon is the best thing ever!"

The other was a gentleman who is a gardener for a woman whose cut flowers he brings in every year for her entries. This year one of her roses took Best of Division, which gets a nice large rosette. He mentioned how since this is the third B...oD that her flowers have won over the years, she's making plans to hang all three rosettes in a nice award case. He then wistfully added "wish I had one of my own. One of these days..." So I ran into our storage room real quick and grabbed another BoD ribbon and presented it to him. He was so taken, he said "Well now I need to hug you!" And he did! :) As her gardener, those ribbons are as much his as they are hers. If I could give him a duplicate set of ribbons for everything they win every year, I totally would. ♥

I love you more this second than I did the previous for that :)

Aw. :) I may be a rotten human being, but I do have my moments.

There are few things that compare to the joy of giving someone a prize or award they weren't expecting.

My takeaway from the entire experience yesterday was that sometimes it's the seemingly insignificant things that make the biggest difference in someone's day. Having those ribbons meant so much to them. They were so proud of their accomplishments, and so was I! They may have felt that I gave them a great gift, but I think I was the one who received a greater gift. I learned a lot in just a few short moments yesterday. <3
