We often get asked how Digg works from a technology perspective, so wanted to shed some insight on this with our first post from the newly-launched technology blog. We’ll be posting regularly to give you a peek at what’s under the hood from the Digg development teams. Ask Ron - our Systems Engineering Lead - the exact number of servers we have in production and he’ll probably respond with, “I don’t honestly know.” I can say we’ve got dozens of web servers and dozens more DB servers. I can say with certainty it takes six specialized graph database servers to run the Recommendation Engine and we have another six to ten machines that serve files from MogileFS. But really, the numbers are the least interesting part of the equation. What makes Digg an interesting place to work are what the pieces are and how they fit together. - Luis Rei

The first type of device to pass this inflection point will be the GPU, as it goes from being a relatively specialized, function-specific coprocessor to a much more generally programmable, data-parallel device. When the GPU has fully made that shift, game developers will have the opportunity to rethink real-time 3D rendering from the ground up. - Luis Rei

PDFMiner is a suite of programs that aims to help analyzing text data from PDF documents. It includes a PDF parser, a PDF renderer (though only rendering text is supported for now), and a couple of nice tools to extract texts. Unlike other PDF-related tools, it allows to obtain the exact location of texts in a page, as well as other layout information such as font size or font name, which could be useful for analyzing the document. - Luis Rei
