i'm with Jason - too late, we're already there.
- Warren Butler
It will never be the same with virtual "people". It's almost impossible to create human like feelings and emotions portrayed on screen.
- Alex Carpenter
They could have just used a virtual Brad Pitt for the whole Benjamin Button movie. All it'd have to do is stare at the side of the camera, stricken with a dumb look. Most of the new generation of actors in Hollywood & tv do basically the same. Couldn't get much worse is what I'm saying.
- Christopher Galtenberg
@Alex: Yeah, Keanu's always had that problem.
- Yan
Alex: the directors are saying that isn't true anymore. They are already mixing in virtual actors into the real ones to do scenes that are too dangerous, or too expensive. They predict we'll soon see a movie made with virtual ones that will be very hard to tell from real ones.
- Robert Scoble
I think virtual actors would only work well in place of actors like Keanu Reeves.
- Shane Floyd
Just discovered I was about the write exactly the same thing as Shane Floyd it seems. Great to know I am not the only one. More seriously though, for a lot of the background roles, I think virtual actors are going to become more and more common place, but as for main characters, not quite yet. That said, if the actors decide to go on strike again, who knows.
- James Fridley
What would you call Keaneau Reeves?
- sofarsoShawn
Next, virtual stars in virtual Hollywood on a virtual red carpet.
- Phil Boiarski
Even local TV news went national and then world and forgot about the community
- Peter Warnock
Two-thirds of the 'local' newspaper is the same wire-service copy I can get for free from CNN.com. And CNN publishes it two or three days earlier.
- Pat Rice
My goal is to do one thing a week that is interesting enough to share with my family (failing that, compensation and benefits lawyers need a backup plan, share with them something extraordinary that I've seen someone else do). This is my 1/7th Scoble plan because I can't have a conversation with a different interesting person every day.
- David Thomas
2009 will be the year that I create. This goal will drive everything else I do.
- Nathan T. Wright
...spending all day on FriendFeed. What to do in 2009: be more efficient in my use of FriendFeed so I don't spend all day on it unproductively. Just some of it.
- Scott Lockhart
Why is this making me laugh and laugh again?
- Martha
Hahaha, they don't care what we think? Fine. Ill keep blogging/tweeting/FFing and the like while they go bankrupt running about with hair alight.
- Alex Wilhelm (FF BLOWS)
Apparently the author doesn't understand Twitter or the value it provides. Not surprising. I often get a similar negative response from others when describing Twitter. It seems some people can't get past the initial question "What are you doing?". I often wonder what change there would be in adoption and use of Twitter if they changed that question to "What are you thinking?" After all what your thinking about is driven by what you're reading, viewing, sharing, contemplating, etc. All r discussion starters
- Jim Goldstein
Whatever you say, newsweek, whatever you say. You're just 'effin jealous because Twitter has effectively captured the Attention Economy and you've been left out in the subzero cold without a ride.
- J. D. Ebberly
It is what it is. Except when it isn't. Innovation isn't what Newsweek decides it is - it's what PEOPLE believe it is.

poor twitter, nobody gets it! LOL I love twitter!
- Susan Beebe
While I'm certainly not convinced of Twitter's value, there's no question that is has been a significant application and to write it off like this just proves what "new-media" types say about "old- media".
- Kenton
They're absolutely right! Now, print news magazines -- there's a medium with a bright future!
- Mitch Wagner
@Alex, If I could 'like' a comment I would like yours, but instead I just liked the entry
- Tyler (Chacha)
I wondered who still reads Newsweek!
- Jack Humphrey
Both, but plurk gets the most attention.
- Shane Floyd
I am on Twitter and tweet more than I Plurk. I only check Plurk a couple of times per week, but I am noticing there is more noise over there now... seems like more people have finally signed up for Plurk. You can find me in both services as @smbeebe
- Susan Beebe
"Just joined FriendFeed? Want to know some dirty secrets you can exploit to gain you popularity, followers and perhaps a bit of fame (or at least infamy)? If so, I have some tips for you! Keep reading and I’ll make you a master of the craft in no time."
- Maki
nice overview mu :) one thing about the replies not showing up in a public timeline - i think a lot of the replies end up being quirky smily face replies, and just friendly remarks, which would really clutter up the timeline (though of course not all of them are - this is just my first 24 hours observation). a good solution is just to reply in a new thread so that you can be heard if...

I've been allocating my friendfeed time to Plurk. Damn that site is addictive.
- Maki
@maki I feel you, I'm caught in a vicious love triangle with Plurk, Friendfeed and a half working twitter. Lets see who will win my long term affection=)
- Steaprok
Maki - Re-tune your FF and split the time. Trust me ??!!
- Charlie Anzman
Hey Darren, good to see you in here. I've been plurking so much you can call me a Plurkaholic. The experience so far is leaps ahead of Twitter and FriendFeed. Now we just need a bigger community (which is thankfully taking hold quite fast).
- Muhammad Saleem
It sure is addictive, but I really can't see this going mainstream...even if the karma keeps people around.
- Ryne Nelson
msaleem, already creating another room for plurk? :D
- Syahid A.
Plurk is too much wurk - I am not a fan
- Leslie Poston
For anyone new to digg, this is a great tracking program (digg alerter) for watching your submissions. And it will program your mind to salivate whenever you hear "dooty-doot-doo" and a story goes popular - http://blog.adamant.com.au/blog...
Don't want to be an ass about this but I would totally prefer if links posted here were about the topic of 'social media' and not just social media content itself (funny/cute pictures blah blah). If you want to use a picture as an example to address a certain topic, at the very least, leave commentary to provide context and start a discussion. Don't just put up a pic and disappear. There are other rooms for stuff like that. We are all busy and we don't need to wade through the extra noise. Thanks.
- Maki
yeah.... so there.... he he... Morning M ;0)
- David Harry
I agree with this. I also say ban images. link to them if they really are relevant!
- MikeonTV
I also think that Mu should administer some others to monitor this room it being the biggest in the FF universe. Maki would be a good start.
- MikeonTV
Thanks for reiterating the point Maki. Mike, I've been wanting to add more people but it seems to me that I can't right now? Anyone else know how?
- Muhammad Saleem
Also, please search before you make multiple threads on the same topic. Splinters the conversation.
- Muhammad Saleem
Try cross-linking if you find two threads on the same topic (e.g. you start a new one accidentally, or find one outside this group).
- Mitchell Tsai
Mu, I think the multiple admin or moderator option is not available for Rooms yet.
- Maki
You know, what's interesting to me is that even after trying quite a few of these tools, the only one I stick with in the long run is Twitter via Gtalk in Adium.
- Muhammad Saleem
I keep sticking with Twhirl because I use Gtalk for communication and Twitter makes it unusable
- Tris Hussey

All of these services and the API calls they make times the amount of users and the automated stuff is what is pwn'ing their database and servers

Fiction in 140 characters EXACTLY. I have two entries written so far and can't decide what to send in.
- Brad McCrorey
This thing really has me going.. I've written 4 potentials so far, and can't decide. Just over 12 hours to go 'til the deadline.
- Brad McCrorey
I would definitely not like to be the judges on this thing. Some of the entries are amazing. Who knew you could be so provocative in 140 characters?
- Brad McCrorey
Just wondering which is the more powerful method/tool for microblogging. I have far more followers on Twitter than here, but I get a lot more comments here than on Twitter. It seems that FF really is becoming the interaction portal (hmm sounds like a good term).
Twitter is really designed to by synchronous. We're not in such a rush on FF, nor are we forced to squish our thoughts into 140 characters. It seems to me that the table is set for more and better discussion.
- Chris Baskind
Twitter is more of a broadcast medium. FriendFeed is a conversation medium.
- Louis Gray
You're right: Twitter was originally designed to answer one question ("What are you doing?"). It just sort of morphed into something akin to an instant messaging service.
- Chris Baskind
Twitter is the new del.icio.us - stagnant and somewhat clueless as to what do to next.
- Aviv
And it's becoming that portal for me. I see more interesting things people share, then I act on it, but also return here to discuss and see what others think as well. I think the variety of inputs while maintaining context is what is so powerful about FF.
- Tris Hussey
I think that's exactly what people who use both are beginning to do Tris. They will start off a meme on Twitter and then have people follow up with it on Friendfeed (and when I say people, I mean Scoble). Twitter really isn't the place for discussions, it's more a place for conversation and small talk (and of course sharing links and such).
- Muhammad Saleem
To Muhammad: Twitter = Conversation portal, FF = Discussions portal .....What's about the lifestream of FF?
- Oliver Ding
Instead of watching Twitter's ups and downs, we the members of the tech community could be using our social media super-powers to make a real difference in the world. - http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...
