In the spirit of Katy S's LSW thread on "what are you reading now", I am asking, what are your "comfort books"? The ones you go back to. Are you even a re-reader?
Pride and Prejudice or Persuasion, Julia Quinn, Lilian Jackson Braun, Emily Brightwell, Neal Stephenson, Tom Clancy.

Early Robin McKinley. The Narnia books. A book called Cousins by Evan Commager. Madeleine L'Engle. Anne Lamott (especially for heartbreak). I read Heinlein's The Door Into Summer whenever I'm really sick. Strunk & White. Girl Interrupted. I could go on--that's just what I can see from the sofa.

Do we have to name specific authors or series? If not, then various kinds of thrillers, especially those that are kind of in a series through the use of common/recurring characters.

Stephen King (The Stand, Dark Tower series, and IT). Jude Devereaux. and The Joy of Cooking.
- ωαřмaiden BrokerPokerface
Mercedes Lackey's Arrows of the Queen series, particularly the first two. the Cherry Ames nursing books (the first 4 or so at least). Tamora Pierce - most of her books, but particularly the Tortall books. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Mostly YA type fantasy stuff. :)

I don't have time to reread anything :( and I spend most of my time reading short story submissions, so most of my reading is material that no one will ever see...
- John: Clockwork Librarian
DJF - Jerome = brilliant! along those lines...To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis is a fav. Also any Jasper Fforde novel, any Dorothy L. Sayers, about 1/2 of Agatha Christie. Mary Stewart, but not the Arthur books. Jane Austen - I'm with Abigail on the choices.
- Louise Alcorn
Harry Potter, The TIme Traveler's Wife, Sense and Sensibility (well, any Jane Austen, really), Howards End, A Trip to the Stars, did I mention Harry Potter? Anything from my childhood: Right now it's the Ramona books.
- Laura Krier
Michael Ondaatje's "The English Patient" and "The Collected Works of Billy the Kid"; "The Collected Works of William Shakespeare"; "The Duino Elegies" by Rilke
- Brent
Bujold, Austen, and Herriot for utterly different axes of "comfort" re-reading.
- N. Ansi
Oh, and The Barrytown Trilogy by Roddy Doyle. Love him.
- Brent
All the kids' books I read and reread as a kid. Narnia, Tolkien, books of myth... but basically anything I read the covers off. I think I may reread the Anne books that take place in college next time I need that sort of thing.
- Marianne
Tove Jansson- the Moomin stories, especially Moominpappa at Sea. Pratchett, The Carpet People
- Pete
Madame Bovary (might be time to re-read that one, come to think of it.)
- Your Neighbor Steve
I re-read Crime and Punishment, and likely will do again. Will launch into Anathem again one day. Bone too.
- Pete
When I get the rare chance to reread books, I go to Glen Cook's BLACK COMPANY books. Sort of a Catch-22 set in a fantasy world.
- John: Clockwork Librarian
Harry Potter. Sometimes other kids' books.
- Rachel Walden
Oh! Josh's "Scarlet Pimpernel" reminded me: The Prisoner of Zenda.

Most Jane Austen (though unsurprisingly P&P and Persuasion are my favorites, and I swear I remember hearing Walt say something similar a few years back), and also, Sunshine by Robin McKinley. Stardust by Neil Gaiman. I should reread the Anne of Green Gables books. I think I've read the first a few times, but I know I read all of them years and years ago. I'd also like to read the Narnia books again.
- Laura H.
Some Pratchett, a lot of Diana Wynne Jones, some early Agatha Christie, The Brothers' Grimm - I probably reread these the most often. However, I'm something of a compulsive rereader and I reread a lot of books.
- Katy S
Ooh, Stardust. That's a good one, LauraH. Also, there's a wonderful audio production of the Narnia books, if you like audio, that has all sorts of famous Brit actors (Patrick Stewart, Michael York, Kenneth Branagh, Lynn Redgrave, etc.) each reading one of the books. It's pretty good. http://bit.ly/cH5rVi There are "comfort books" I listen to, because I loved the reading. A lot of Dick Francis novels I prefer to listen to, esp. the ones read by Simon Jones.
- Louise Alcorn
Watership Down, Neuromancer, Fellowship of the Ring
