Exhausted e-resource librarian stuck in budgets and renewals seeks an LSW miracle: I need primary sources for abortion in the 1700s. Have found many cool, fabulous primary sources for 1800s, but nada for earlier than 1808. Please help?
Oops! And it needs to be U.S. I've found Martha Ballard's Diary (http://dohistory.org/diary...) but she only mentions abortion once. - Jen
Many thanks, Jill!! - Jen
I'd go about this differntly: find secondary sources, then look to see what their primary sources were. So, articles in America History & Life, or JSTOR (also our catalog shows this book - "Abortion in America : the origins and evolutions of national policy, 1800-1900 / " which I'd expect to reference primary sources, perhaps from the time period you're looking at) - ellbeecee
Try sources in reference list from an article like this? http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed... - maʀtha
I suggested the secondary source suggestion as well - this article was WMQ was awesome: Taking the Trade: Abortion and Gender Relations in an Eighteenth-Century New England Village Cornelia Hughes Dayton The William and Mary Quarterly , Third Series, Vol. 48, No. 1 (Jan., 1991), pp. 19-49 Published by: Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture Article Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable... - Jen
This search highlights how difficult it is to find digitized primary sources however - lots of great stuff out there, but buried deep. - Jen
A WorldCat search for "abortion* and 18th century" would also pull up books where the bibliography might be worth a look, like http://www.worldcat.org/title... - Amandadon't
