Our institution is adopting Google Apps for Education and, simultaneously, getting rid of student email (actually, keeping email addresses but only as a forwarding account). Anyone know of other institutions that have done this? I'd think you'd run into problems in GApps without a true email account tied to it...
are they not getting gmail addresses? that's the only way I know of to get into google apps

well, they're getting .edu addresses that go to the google apps system directly, is probably a more accurate way of putting it.

We've got this. They get STUDENTID@utc.edu email addresses but it goes directly to the gmail interface. We havent turned on all of the apps, just some of them. And it's only student side; staff and faculty are still on Exchange, with nary a googleApp in sight.

Sorry, I wasn't clear--the idea is that they will *not turn on* Gmail for students. (Faculty will still be on Exchange.) Instead, students simply won't have an inbox. I don't understand the rationale and will be arguing for Gmail to be turned on for students, but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has done what they are contemplating. BTW you could still get into Google Apps, simply by going to say Google Docs and logging in (login credentials will be the same as they use for their LMS, library record, registration etc.

I think this is what we have at UIUC. Google for students (well, they can pick GMail or MS Live...) and grad students and faculty are on Exchange. They do have a true email account, and it's a google account. With a .edu pretty mask on it.

we have it here - Gmail for the students. We have had issues with students who've already got a google account getting all mixed up. The Google apps associated with the institutional gmail were not all turned on so not all the things they used were available. Ok.. that's confusing. I am confused too.

I think that's what U of AZ was doing too, Rudy - they had a google account that the logged into using their institutional login

OK, I'm becoming convinced that what is being proposed at my institution (Google Apps + no institutional Gmail for students) is sufficiently bizarre that nobody is able to understand it...

University of Washington switched to gmail accounts for alums (not sure about current students), which retain the original u.washington.edu address, just through gmail's interface/storage.
