I would think that having a style manual on your coffee table would be its own form of birth control. :P

We do keep ours behind the desk. It got too ridiculous.

Ours are behind the desk. I guess we need to lock them up as well. 2 copies of MLA plus a Hacker now gone, in addition to 2 APAs and 2 Chicagos which walked away in the spring. Sad panda.

Andy, if it was on the bedside table, maybe.

Martha, it's funny--ours are on ready ref (open shelves) by the desk and our patrons seem to think they need to ask us before taking them.

Years ago, we used to keep the typeface books behind the reference desk. If we hadn't, gang members looking for Old English typeface to design their jacket decoration would cut up or steal the book. Teenage gang members knew to ask for the book at the desk. One time, two boys, maybe 12 years old, asked for the book, and my first (unspoken) thought was, "Aren't you guys a little young for Old English?"

(No one asks for the book anymore. I guess they get Old English from the internet these days.)

The gangsters where I'm from preferred gothic lowercase.

This conversation has taken a fun detour.
