@collib-l discussion about how to prevent students from unethical practice of attaching PDFs to a class email to make reading easier than logging in through CMS, following a link, then logging into library for remote library access. Teaching ethical use of information is so important, so we must instruct this student about why this is SO wrong.
*Not emailed, just posted in the discussion directly in the CMS as opposed to linking through the library. I'll admit I just did this for one of my online classes - posted the article as a file in the discussion prompt. #badlibrarian

Barbara: curious! Why is this unethical?
- Jason Griffey
If the posted resource is available to all the class members behind (two?) system-logins and the venue (email list or Course Management System) is only available to these same people, the only differences are 1. it is easier for all participants to access, and 2. the use stats are (arguably) not trackable by the library. Is this use an unethical use?

That was my initial train of thought, awd. I'm struggling to see where this might be unethical.

I've been following the conversation and I think the thing that spoke to me is that the professor doesn't want them getting in the habit of posting the docs when in the future it might be external? Here behind a paywall I think it's an issue of licensing semantics. The whole thing feels very convoluted to me and Yet Another Reason we need OA.

There's nothing to my mind remotely unethical. But ooh, does the license say we can? Is it a copyright violation? Should we notify the FBI? I'm always amazed at how librarians worry about this stuff.

was it this thread? [collib-l] Question - Copyright, Fair Use, and Enterprising Students, 06/11/2012 http://lists.ala.org/wws...

When it comes to copyright, illegal does not necessarily mean unethical. I wish someone had said "even if licensing terms do prevent sharing a PDF with other students in the course via a password-protected area, that is Not A Good Thing so let's explain the situation to faculty without being publishers' Copyright Cops." As so many say: fair use, it is a muscle.

Yes, and yes. And sorry for venting over here ... sometimes I would rather do my AARRGGHH here than try to engage in rational discussion elsewhere.

I sing that song alot... and every time I show up, everyone shouts "Norm!" at me...

hahahahaha. Yeah, we fret too much. I sometimes wonder if we want to fret about this because it feels like something that we are uniquely situated to fret about? I mean, if we're copyright cops, at least we have a role -- if everything's OA, where are we? Needless to say, I'm not a fan of this mode of thought, but I have seen troubling hints of it here and there.
