Sarah: Thanks, I knew there was another one doing this that I had heard about in the past 6-12 months.

We're not doing it officially in any capacity, but I sure as heck try to talk our thesis students into thinking that way about their departmental liaisons (or encourage any random student who feels attached to a particular librarian, in general - since we are big into First Year Experience, first-years frequently imprint on whoever the librarian was that worked with their FYE). I have used the phrase "So-and-so is YOUR librarian" (sometimes followed by "well, actually they're ALL your librarians," many times), and I think the personal approach is a nifty one. Especially at big big schools where it's not going to happen less explicitly.

Yes, the University of Richmond (Boatwright Library) has had a "personal librarian" program since 2000. I featured it at an ALA Poster Session several years ago. -- Lucretia McCulley

Lucretia: is there any chance your poster session content can be found online? I'd love to learn more about your library's project.

I agree - this sounds very interesting. Thank you for looking into this further, Stephen!

The U of Chicago does it or did it. There was an article in c&rl news about it I think, maybe C&RL. The called it a class librarian.

We talked about it at USC during our last strategic planning year, but the idea was vetoed due to a lack of time and personnel. But it's a great idea and I would love to be someone's personal librarian =)
