What's not clear: were the videos in question ever on the phone, and second, surely if this was an issue, they would have done due diligence before the deal.

Someone found out about the video, a huge public protest happened, it would become a media circus because someone used a keyword "racism". So Verizon went nuts and said "Ohh we need to make a statement and do something now! Who cares what?"

It doesn't matter when the videos were made - much like it doesn't matter when a scandal arises over someone else's past behavior - like Obama's pastor & McCain's association w/ Gov. Williams. The behavior may be in the past - but the "guilt by association" is always in the present. Verizon clearly decided not to get behind Loren in this. Sometimes, your past does come back to haunt you. Even if it's not 'fair'.

Even though I follow your logic, I recently said down with a guy running an ad platform and he said business has never been better. We talked for a few hours, but he was pretty emphatic about the fact that display advertising will continue to be a booming business. He's seeing a lot of companies reallocating their advertising dollars away from print and tv and opting for online instead.

I stopped taking care of myself. I had gained weight over the years and stopped exercising. When Pets was collapsing, I started exercising again and the pounds had started to come off, so my physical health had started to improve. What I didn’t realize is that my emotional health was deteriorating. I did not recognize my own depression. For at least two years after Pets shut down, I didn’t care if I lived or died. I never actively tried to kill myself; that would go against my Midwestern upbringing. I just didn’t care if I lived. I was also just starting to experience the first symptoms of peri-menopause, so I had to come terms with my own childlessness. I had curiously decided that if I was meant to have a child, then I would have gotten pregnant during my marriage. Not having children reinforced my indifference to life during this period. I didn’t have children to take care of, so what was the point? I was also angry. The anger came in waves.

Two problems. Nik + SG would have been paid...well Nik definitely but both were named editors so presume both. Say 80-100k yr for an editor, maybe total if they split it + other writers for the site (allocated expenses, even if they were shared between sites). 50k uniques over 2 months doesn't even come remotely close to covering expenses. Arrington is a tight arse who hates spending money. My guess is that the site wasn't growing quickly enough and they decided to cut their losses now

It's also not a space Arrington would want to necessarily own either, after all there's no magical pot of gold nor any competitor he wants to destroy, so where as CrunchGear was sustained at a loss for a long time (and could well still be losing money) there was no reason for TCIT to do so. Pure business decision from him.

TCIT is an idea that has been floating around for some time in Arringtonland, I was even involved with some very early discussions (nixed when Gillmor noticed I was being included in group emails). I'm going to side with Brian here. What is right: Comet McNaught was that bright in WA (I use to live there), but I checked my attempted pics, they predate this by over a week. I'm sure the comet was only that bright for less than a week. Second, the main Australia Day fireworks occur in Perth City...which isn't near a beach . Maybe it's Leighton Beach with Fremantle to the left...but it doesn't seem right. I did check the weather records though, there was a storm that night, and it's in the right direction

I also use Talkshoe for my weekly podcast, co-hosted with a bloke 100km away. It's pretty solid, good for getting guests on from the crowd. Technically, it's not bad at all, as long as you spend a bit of time getting levels right.

No Cyndy, you have to get that fixed before you start, I'm afraid. You get 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the show to work stuff like that out... although of course you can just not start the show on time. Best to get an independent listener to give you feedback in the live chat on levels, can't trust your own ear. It's tricky and there's no guarantee from week to week that everything will be perfect. Just part of the challenge! :D

Also Cyndy, make sure you keep your participants in line! No moving furniture, squeaky chairs, barking dogs, squalling babies, or coughing into the mic. If your speakers want people to listen to them, they have to act at least somewhat professionally during recordings. Good show though, I'll keep listening!

I'm using FF differently than Twitter. I follow many fewer here and am being followed by many fewer. I like the intimacy, talking mostly with people I actually know in most cases. At Twitter I have many followers and use it to get more viewership of a new blog post.

Duncan and Thomas have it right. You always have the option of using Twitter but participating in Friendfeed returns more. I use both as many do (but hide and just occasionally look at the Twitter posts to avoid overload). It's getting better each week. Simply a matter of how YOU choose to set it up.

I actually prefer to use Twitter for less important messages and FriendFeed for stuff when I want to generate conversation. The idea behind my logic is that some people, to reduce the noise, block all tweets, as they consider tweets less important. I agree with these folk, so I use Twitter for stuff that they're probably not interested in.

There is a risk in Friendfeed that you will only ever see the comments of a small subset of the FF population - interspersed with the odd Friend of... who may make it "In" - Rooms has the potential to widen the gene pool but sticking to the friends tab can definitely limit the number of names you will see...

I don't feel a need to reinvent the web inside of FF. However it is part of what I do, in the same way Twitter is. I like FF better, but only marginally better. It's very far from the ideal. None of these guys have managed to combine all the elements the way plain old HTML does it so well. It's nice in some ways but a big step backward in others.

Nah, I think the blogosphere and devices like Twitter and FriendFeed show me cool things all the time. When you rely on one aggregator/editor for information... things you are interested in slip through. If you leave it up to crowdsourcing, you see what you want.

Louis -- that's kind of the point -- those products didn't launch well, and with no slight to you -- I haven't heard of them because I depend on TechMeme to tell me what's important in the tech world. TechMeme does what it does well, but it has some real limits and the industry has shaped around those limits, just as the industry shaped around the limits of the press in the pre-Internet era and during the browser and Java wars in the 90s.

I would find it interesting to hear less breaking news and new startups. Instead more analytics on the guys that are doing it right. Why are they successful? Nine out of 10 new startups don't seem to be launching something that addresses an actual need, instead they launch a technology. We have enough technology already, so that fails. And providing us with next gen social ad business models ain't going to work either ;-)

Jason, a good idea:-) BTW TechMeme could be improved vastly if it could ignore 3 types of post: 1) any posts that say "Breaking News" 2) posts that copy the exact content of another post and add 1-2 lines to them (echo echo) 3) Anything, and I mean anything that discusses the performance of Twitter at this moment. Removing any of those would make TechMeme probably 100% more interesting and diverse already. Is Gabe listening? ;-)

My route-around is to read Louis Gray. That's for sure. But he'll be slowed down by two new babies. But I have a lot to say on this topic. The thing is that the early adopters are way ahead of most of the world and the rest of the world needs to catch up before we can see a ton of new stuff again that'll be successful. In the area of work, for instance, on the Office 2.0 database there are more than 800 services. How many of them have any of us tried? I bet a VERY SMALL percentage.

It would be interesting to see if someone were to calculate a success/fail ratio on these new products AND relate that to the amount of hype created in some breaking news blogs. I could tell you the outcome, no correlation at all. You either execute right or you don't. The power of the "Hype Blog" review isn't sustainable or accessible for users beyond the early adopters.

Gabe, to be clear, I don't think TechMeme should change. I think we need to flow around it though, provide other ways for people to find what's new. We used to have weblogs.com before the blogging world got too big and the spammers discovered it. Digg is even more of a concentrator than TM, so that isn't what I want. Oddly I don't think it's an algorithmic thing. You and I tend to view things diametrically opposite. I think human beings are the answer, you think algorithms. I think we're both right. :-0)
