Instigate Debate is an experiment. An avenue for exchange between the public and public figures, without the hindrance - or safety net - of media spin. It's simple. If you have a mobile phone, it most likely has a camera. Whoever you are, wherever you are, if you spot a public figure, any of the wonderful people who regularly appear in our fantastic magazines, newspapers or even on our tellies, try not to gush, or faint. Instead, ask them a question, and film the response. There is a list of suggested questions below, and on www.instigatedebate.com. What do you want to know? How can we find out? - M1ke

"The gun comment rings true though - how many gun companies sell weapons ignorant of the fact that they're purpose is to shoot (and as a result injure or kill) someone? Though admittedly that discussion is a bit off topic." - M1ke

The Pirate Bay Trial: The Official Verdict - Guilty - http://digg.com/world_n...
"I disagree with that - I'm quite happy to go see films at the cinema, its a bit of an experience plus its what makes the business exist at all. I just don't get how the films then get released on DVD at like £15 or more. They put all the bonus content on to try and justify it but I'd rather get the films on DVD for £5 and not bother with any extra content. If there's going to be a boycott it should be of new releases on DVD, as thats what they're mainly suing for infringements (as if anyone who actually wanted to go to the cinema wouldn't do so because they got a shitty rip on TPB)." - M1ke

Council sends 4,000 sack notices - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1...
My mum got one of these, its apparently just procedure and she hasn't had a pay cut but a lot of people on higher pay grades have lost out. Allegedly its about a new "equality pay" scheme, which presumably means hard working folk have to lose money to give lazy chavs more benefits or something. - M1ke

Drama lacking in road charge vote - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1...
Dave: "I'm somewhat annoyed at this but it was what everybody was expecting. I would like to see the 'no voters' offer up a better solution to cutting emissions/easing congestion/improving public transport, all I've heard is 'why should I have to pay' or 'It will never work'." Me: "I agree - people seemed to take the referendum as 'should there be a congestion charge or not' rather than considering the multitude of benefits that it would bring they just say 'I can't pay!' I remember Zuk saying ages ago that the congestion charge was a bad idea because he couldn't get to Uni on public transport and I fear a lot of people took this view and missed the point, that the congestion charge would pay back the funding _after_ improvements to public transport that will allow people to avoid using the car. I hope the Government does a traditional about face in this situation and brings it in anyway - a populace that made Big Brother a hit don't deserve to have a say in such vital matters." - M1ke

Re: Why FriendFeed won’t go mainstream (Part I) - http://scobleizer.com/2008...
"Comment fragmentation is the thing that really gets me. I'm unconcerned about the noise, in my opinion people to follow on Twitter and FriendFeed are my real life friends - I don't use them to get my news as yet. Instead I read a number of blogs a day, some of which will be posting about the same thing. I have primaries and secondaries, so my thoughts either get commented on the main ones or on my own blog. The problem with FriendFeed does come when people blog about an item, share an item and Twitter about an item. It splits the comments and no one knows everybody's opinions. Then again, by my own method of blogging about something I found interesting people can comment there, which is no different from FriendFeed's effect. Really I think we need to go back and take a longer look at the idea of Trackbacks. With the increased power of modern aggregators Trackbacks could provide the best branching discussions - as every blog who reports an item tracks back to it, everyone who blogs..." - M1ke

Re: Why FriendFeed will go mainstream (Part II) - http://scobleizer.com/2008...
"I find it interesting that at the moment FriendFeed is always seen as a means of finding out about blogs - like its in competition with Google Reader or something. As a geek early-adopter whose friends are all "normal" or at best mildly into the internet (and those who are aren't so much into the blog scene) my own personal view is its like a public Facebook, ignoring the personal and contact stuff in favour of aggregating all my content from various social sites. This means that my less techy friends don't need to be on all these sites to see what I'm up to - they just need to check my FriendFeed. If this were combined with OAuth and Open Social to add privacy features interlinked with its aggregated sites and an open friends list we'd have the final component in a network of sites able to freely link each other in a true social network." - M1ke

Re: Mike Arrington is Right, Facebook is Wrong - http://scobleizer.com/2008...
"I think on that second issue I agree with Arrington - just because my email is there for my friends to look at doesn't mean I want them plastering it anywhere they please, definitely not getting me sent mail from other companies as a result. Then again, this isn't an issue that's started with Facebook - for years most sites have had options to scan your address book and send invites to all your contacts, even though the address book is even more private than your information in a social network. The real issue here is one of identity, and connecting your identities to those of people you know - and then attaching certain usage rights to those connections. A differential is needed - I may be friends with people from my forums on Facebook, but I don't want them seeing some photos of me and my family. That's my choice and I shouldn't have it taken away from me just because I use Facebook as a means of contacting people." - M1ke
