Apple touted the first intel Macs as a machine that was best of the three worlds, it wasn’t because they had the best operating system (which I’d argue they do), but it was because the machines ran OS X, Linux/Unix, and Windows. All three, on one device. Heck, if you really want to get down to the nuts and bolts of it all, Apple plugged Windows in an attempt to get traditional beige box users to check out Apple’s products. Why couldn’t Microsoft do the same thing? That picture from the Cult of Mac could be the perfect marketing tool for Microsoft. “5 out of 7 Journalists are using a Mac, but how many of them are also running Windows 7 on their Machine?” I’d be willing to bet that a large majority of them have a virtual machine with Windows running on their laptops.

that's just it tho, since Apple moved from PPC to intel machines, MS automatically supported them. Tho NT is built on the ability to run on different architectures - HAL (or Hardware Abstraction Layer) was designed for this very purpose and is how NT was capable of running on alpha based processors (the RISC CPU from Compaq) and on the Itanium (the totally 64bit chip from intel, which...

tho MS market driods have been very poor in pointing any of this out. Sometimes I think I'd make a fortune if I applied to work for the MS marketing team ;)

alphaxion, maybe we should storm Redmond together. ;)

Movin' the money around keeps the system active. Didn't we see this coming?
- Christopher Harley
It may be on the horizon, but I think I'd rather pay the 30-50 dollars for an OS than let a huge corporation datamine my content to find appropriate keywords (if it turns out to be anything like Google's ad model) so they can feed me "relevant" ads.
- Joshua Schnell
Do you guys think they'll implement either system specifically, or try for both at the same time?
- Joshua Schnell
I don't think I'd mind an ads if a) they didn't get location data, b) it made my AT&T bill be at least $40 cheaper. I don't think I'd do it for less.

Palm has released an update to webOS that (for a change) doesn’t include code to bypass Apple’s attempt to block the Pre from syncing with iTunes.

"What are the ethics in creating an application for the AppStore, charging money for it, and then abandoning it’s development, but still charging for an application that has known bugs?" and "The second thing that’s really starting to annoy me is that iPhone developers are lambasting the AppStore process in public forums, without thinking about how consumers feel. There’s a key difference between developing for a desktop platform and a mobile device, and I think it’s about time we actually talk about them. Developers need to realize that consumers approach mobile applications in a very different way than they approach desktop applications. They need to develop accordingly, instead of whining and complaining about how Apple has created a closed system"

Hah, care to elaborate Glen and Maxamad ?

I appreciate heavy mediation in some things. The AppStore is one of those things. For me, it works.
- Christopher Harley
As a heavy buyer of apps, I get annoyed by all the developer complaining. They seem to spend more time fighting Apple than caring for the consumers. Might just be a PR thing, but the constant whining pushes me toward developers that don't whine publicly.
- Graham English
Graham, that's an excellent point. I understand that the squeaky wheel gets the oil, but it is getting to be a bit much. I also think it's unacceptable that some are backing out on their projects and discontinuing support for applications people have recently paid for. Seems selfish to me.
- Joshua Schnell
Totally agree. Especially the Facebook app fiasco. Dude gets all huffy and drops out and just today the app was updated. So to me, the process seems to work despite the pissy developer. If I was FB, I'd be pissed with all the negative attention. So yeah, selfish.
- Graham English
Not only that, but my phone needs to be secure so I welcome the scrutiny. It might be a pain for the developers, but my phone is like my wallet. CC#s, data, my identity, it's all got to be protected.
- Graham English
That's what has me all annoyed. They don't stop and think about us, instead they worry about how fast they can push something out, and collect some coin, or so it seems.
- Joshua Schnell
You said it! Why are the developers so annoyed with Apple? Because it's slowing down their profits. In this day and age, we could all use some restraint. Greed ain't good.
- Graham English
may I point out this as just 1 of the examples as to why developers are bitching about the way apple is handling iphone app submissions http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009... Apple are really causing many of the problems you're complaining about. Many developers are seeing their app submissions being delayed and/or rejected with zero feedback from Apple. Some apps...

I really need to get to work in Pages. I feel like I've undervalued the app's utility. And Jumpsoft seems to be the only game in town when it comes to templates. The same can be said for http://keynotepro.com Spendy and seemingly alone in the marketplace.

gotta love the internets. Your site points to another site, which points to TUAW, which point to Apple's support forums… as long as the news reaches us, I guess.

lol, I just post them from where I get them. :)

Maybe I'm being too literal, too geeky, or too cynical, but when I see this, I automatically translate it to: "you are the style to my substance" o_O
- LogEx
:) LogEx - great point. However the "substance" of designers include elements of control like cascading style sheets. Take Michelangelo's David. Is the block of marble HTML and the chisel CSS? Or is the marble the set of all recognized unicode + HTML tags and the chisel an author's arrangement thereof? It can probably be argued both ways.
- Micah Wittman
Yes, you're being too literal, too geeky, and too cynical. I automatically translate it to: "we're better when we're together."
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
Micah, not to get too off-track, but I don't think the art analogy applies. Design by definition has strong inherent creative and practical aspects. In the web world, we have explicitly sought to separate content from presentation (though I think that's not always appropriate).

except for that MSFT mouse! :) .... needs the new magic mouse....oh and the new LED display if getting really particular :) Here's my version - http://mikebracco.com/hardwar...

AHA! I knew I smelled open source. DO NOT allow these people near any sort of usability or design problem. They will throw in more ugly buttons EVERY TIME!
