Fwd: Is there a way in iTunes to convert a digital copy of a film down to a more iPhone-friendly size? The Inglourious Basterds digital file (from the bluray package) is almost 2gb; other files I've converted straight from Vuze or Handbrake to iPhone size are around half a gb. (via http://friendfeed.com/faithx5...)
Forgot to crosspost this question here from my feed; Googling suggested using Quicktime Pro, but I only have the basic Quicktime, so I don't have the export option. [I'm on OSX.]

Hmmm...is there an ffmpeg that isn't command line based? I am not a programmer, and I looked through the documentation on ffmpeg.org, and it all looks like gibberish to me.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Yes, but there are enough Google hits from people who've figured it out...try the simple: ffmpeg -i <filein>.avi <fileout>.mp4 and let me know how it works for you.
- Prolific Programmer
If you rightclick the video in itunes you should get a "Create iPod or iPhone" option.
- Joshua Schnell
Prolific - never got past the compiling the program stage. Couldn't even get that done. Tried ffmpegX, but that created a 2 1/2 hour long blank file. Joshua, that option is greyed out, possibly because it's already iPhone compatible (it's an m4v), it's just huge - I just want to lower quality/resolution settings to knock it from 2gb down to about 500 or 600mb.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
from iPhone
I have the same file... it's protected / DRM'd, the only ways I know of are analog hole, gray-market software that gets around the DRM, or software that captures what's being displayed on your screen (e.g., Snapz Pro).
- LogEx
LogEx, that's what I was afraid of. Dumb of them not to include multiple file sizes on the digital copy disc, I think. Tempts me to rent the DVD and rip it myself.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
As Joshua Schnell said - "If you rightclick the video in itunes you should get a "Create iPod or iPhone" option".
- Khürt Williams
Khurt, but you don't. That was the first thing I tried. I think LogEx is right, they've DRMed the usefulness out of it.

interesting. I've tried a few times to get animated images to work on FF without success.. I guess piping it through twitpic might be the answer!

veo, yeah Twitpic, RSS (MediaRSS), Delicious, Tumblr all seem to work. There are more than that but those come to mind.

Just one question, Josh: are you by chance spinning on 9 different Aeron chairs that were a steal after the first dot-com bubble burst? The future of the internets: you're looking at it =)
- Micah Wittman
could anybody describe how to create such a picture? thx
- Arnaud Fischer
Arnaud, see http://friendfeed.com/mokarga... for tips. And Josh correct me if I'm wrong, he uploaded to Twitpic the same animated GIF 9 times, then created a friendfeed post and attached all 9 images by URL (instead of choosing images from his hard drive). Images coming from twitpic, soup.io, etc will animate, but photos hosted by friendfeed itself won't.
- Micah Wittman
Did not sleep well with all the spinning. :p

It's infinitely more amusing when they don't all load at the same time. Spinning chaos!!!
- CAJ, somewhere else
Why the friendfeed limitation on animated .gifs? It seems arbitrary and odd to me. I could see wanting to limit filesize (animated .gifs can get large) but you can upload huge .jpgs without any trouble.

Mesmerizing like a lava lamp. Hey! You are a 'Lame-o Lamp'! And you might want to call the folks in the makeup department and get that forehead de-sheened. Thanks, Lindsay! :) I think that's the first time someone described wanting to systematically hit me on the head repeatedly, yet have it come off as a compliment. I would love to take credit like I was Andy Warhol or something, but alas I was just tired and felt like doing something silly. :p

yep, what Lindsay said. That was one of the first bona-fide instances I've seen of using Friendfeed as a medium for net art. You could get in the Whitney & stuff. GOOD JOB

LOL! I actually didn't mean it the way it came out (the hitting you on the head part, the compliment part is ok ;)). But I'm in tears laughing when I read your reply. Whack-a-mole always frustrated the heck out of me... I did a lot more staring than hitting when I tried to play. It was mesmerizing.

When are these companies going to learn that we want to access their content on a multitude of platforms, and not just some proprietary box. Blows my mind that in 2009 we're still dealing with this crap.
- Joshua Schnell
The attraction of control a settop gives you is almost impossible to resist. They can fully monetize their content and do whatever they want whenever they want. If it works the payoff is big.
- Todd Hoff
The key word there is *if*. If it was only the BBC doing this it wouldn't be so bad, surely the rest of the television companies are going to follow suit. That means a bunch of set top boxes in a home. I don't think consumers will pay for an ABC, NBC, CBS, BBC, Fox, and a CBC box. It's just too much in my opinion.
- Joshua Schnell
I'm not disagreeing, it's just a mighty juicy carrot :-)
- Todd Hoff
Daryl, when a dev firm can't make more than 21 dollars a day, for each day they worked on the project there's something clearly wrong with the culture on the AppStore.
- Joshua Schnell
Also, the argument isn't about liking the free apps. It's about developers not being able to develop for a platform because it doesn't nearly pay out enough to employ themselves. If we keep expecting free apps from developers, the developers are eventually going to leave the iPhone behind because they can't afford to sustain themselves financially.
- Joshua Schnell
They're not going to elaborate because they are merely reading the title and not reading the story. Daryl didn't read the story either it appears.
- Tamar Weinberg
Here are some snippets for the lazy (cough Daryl/Will/Shey cough): "When a development firm such as blacksmith games puts together an entire month worth of free downloads for the iPhone community, and the community can’t turn around and support the developer by purchasing a $1.99 application in the appstore, something’s clearly rotten in the state of the AppStore."
- Tamar Weinberg
Actually, I did read the article. But I'll forgive your snarky comment. :). Reading the article doesn't automatically mean I'm going to agree. Cuz I don't.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
"A dollar ninety-nine for a mobile game is a steal no matter how awesome or crappy a game is, and the fact that a development firm tosses out a tweet that says, “if 5% of the daily appvent visitors would buy plushed i would be happy” reveals a pretty grotesque commentary on iPhone users and their purchasing tendencies."
- Tamar Weinberg
Then why just a "no"? Maybe you can add a little more? Surely it's not that difficult...
- Tamar Weinberg
In the middle of typing a response... if you guys could just give me a minute...
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Might've been a good idea to say that before the "no." I know it's FF culture not to read articles but only to comment on titles - so apologies if I was misjudging you there, but based on Daryl's comment, it's evident that at least one person didn't read it.
- Tamar Weinberg
First of all -- products and services should be aimed at filling market needs. If you focus on that, you'll succeed. Secondly, if people want to download crappy free apps that are easy to find and that makes them happy, guess what? NEED SOLVED. If there is a market for people who want an app that does more and are willing to pay for it and you can fill that need --- NEED SOLVED. If there isn't a market for it, then don't complain about it -- create a better product or fill another need.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Shey, fair points, but it's not an issue of a "better product" when the culture of free makes "better products" harder to sell.
- Tamar Weinberg
Thirdly, it isn't the customer's fault that your development costs are too high.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
No, it's not. But this isn't that abnormal for this market. I bet development costs are high for every decent game in the app store.
- Tamar Weinberg
The bottom line is that the culture shift has made it impossible for GOOD products to sell. Look at this article from TUAW: http://www.tuaw.com/2009...
- Tamar Weinberg
@Tamar I totally get the damaging effects of "the culture of free". That culture will always be around, so you can a) fight it and reduce your share of the market or b) embrace it, and yes, competition will increase, but so will the overall iPhone share and your share of that share. Get it :)
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
It's a shame to have really great products that can't sell. But in the end, if no one is willing to pay for it -- competition or not -- that's all that matters.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I understand that. I also think Josh's argument is very valid. If App store apps had to cost money, it wouldn't always be around. Embracing it in a competitive market with over 100k games is damn hard. TUAW says it nicely, "Everyone is still working to unlock success in the App Store, but with over 100,000 products on the shelves, it has become increasingly more difficult for the good apps to stand apart."
- Tamar Weinberg
People would be more willing to pay for it if there weren't so many free games in the app store. I personally am guilty of it. I won't buy games because there are free apps that can consume my time, even if the games rock.
- Tamar Weinberg
@Tamar Then I think the problem is not with the free apps. The problem is with the iTunes' capability of showcasing good apps through social/recommendation engines.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
@Tamar I agree there -- but you won't get anywhere close to 100% conversion. And when others find out that apps are no longer free -- they'll just go to another platform, like Android, and all iPhone devs will lose.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
The App Store needs Amazon's ability to produce recommendations based on what you've downloaded (and from other people who have downloaded what you've downloaded). Right now, it's these big pools of apps that aren't really, in any way, differentiated from each other except by title and icon and very loose definitions. 'New and Noteworthy' and 'What's Hot' don't really tell me ANYTHING...

Shey, maybe social recommendation engines work, but I'm not seeing the power in those that I'm engaged in. I'm also not looking at 100% conversion, but some conversion that translates to decent sales would be nice. And personally, I think it's close-minded and stupid for developers to only focus on the iPhone market. I personally am not going to buy an iPhone. I'll keep my iPod touch and get an Android phone. If only developers would flock to the Android platform.
- Tamar Weinberg
Woah, I jump in the shower and come back to a boat load of comments... catching up... responses to follow. ;)
- Joshua Schnell
Akiva, there are recommendations, but I personally used them 1% of the time. There's a "Customers Also Bought" section on the bottom of each app's page though, but it's not very popular.
- Tamar Weinberg
I think this can all be summed up with "Free != Best Option". If we stop categorizing things as Free and Not Free we might actually get better recommendations, and find applications that can provide us with the greatest marginal utility. I'd love to see the analytics on the amount of users who just go straight to the free section of the store.
- Joshua Schnell
Akiva, I completely agree with the recommendation engine needing serious work. I've commented on it a number of times on the site, primarily here: http://su.pr/1TfAHz and here: http://su.pr/1I0Exv Apple really needs to rework the system. They're long overdue, and need to start embracing social media technologies.
- Joshua Schnell
On a tangent, Blacksmith Games sound like they were operating inefficiently, art, story, and level design can be done in parrallel, at least for a small portion of the time. They should also focus on building a game engine that can be used as a frame work, reducing overall time for initial production down a few months, and subsequent titles at maybe half the total time, the story and...

WinMo has had free apps since 2000, if not sooner. What makes iPhone so special that their devs -- many of whom switched over -- can't keep up? Palm has had free apps forever, too. No tears, no abolition.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Jimminy, those are excellent point, but what about the barrier of entry in to a market? If the barrier is so high that new comers can't compete, or even break even, won't developers give up on the system? It worries me that innovative applications might not make it to the device because a developer can't afford to develop for the iphone. Blacksmith Games was just an example, but they're surely not the exception to the rule.
- Joshua Schnell
If it's good, best of breed, then it will sell. That's why Tweetie beats out a lot of the free Twitter apps. But, seriously, how many tower defense/match-3/cute-adventures/on-rails-shooters do we need? Or Twitter clients? If the money is not there then stop complaining and take the development effort elsewhere. Android will be *the* platform next year so start now, and you also get to...

- Joshua Schnell
Isn't Joshua's argument centered on the advertising that takes place at the point of sale. If a developer wants to advertise their app to me, find me and present a compelling reason for me to buy your app. Trying to gain my patronage in the handful of minutes I spend browsing the app store isn't a winning strategy for positioning your product. I spend my life out in the world, reading...

I'll add this sidebar to the discussion. My cab company desperately needs to understand what our mobile app should do, correctly, right from day one. This is a really interesting article and discussion. While yes, there are many things the developers can do to improve their chances (and hey, if the market wants something, you have to work with that fact, not against it), I don't think that Apple is entirely blameless in this whole dysfunctional arrangement. I'm a bit funny with my icons. They have to be neat and arranged in a nice little line on the right hand side. Anything out of place and I can't deal with it! It's a good idea to have them quite big though to see exactly what you need where and when.

Apple touted the first intel Macs as a machine that was best of the three worlds, it wasn’t because they had the best operating system (which I’d argue they do), but it was because the machines ran OS X, Linux/Unix, and Windows. All three, on one device. Heck, if you really want to get down to the nuts and bolts of it all, Apple plugged Windows in an attempt to get traditional beige box users to check out Apple’s products. Why couldn’t Microsoft do the same thing? That picture from the Cult of Mac could be the perfect marketing tool for Microsoft. “5 out of 7 Journalists are using a Mac, but how many of them are also running Windows 7 on their Machine?” I’d be willing to bet that a large majority of them have a virtual machine with Windows running on their laptops.

That's such bullshit that they leave "upgradeable" off the Mac side. Of course you can upgrade a Mac. You can't do it indefinitely because new technology imposes ceilings that old designers didn't necessarily foresee, but yes, you can upgrade.
- Spidra Webster
Yep, which is why I have to make this point every time someone makes a post like this. Counter the stupid and nonsense marketing.
- Alex Scoble
The displays and added memory also make it a very skewed comparison (never buy extra memory from Apple). Compare base machines, and don't forget to show specs... there are bound to be other architectural differences. And yes, those Mac towers in particular are very upgradeable, with 4 drive bays, 8 memory slots, and 3 PCI slots aside from the graphics card. Oh, and 2 gigabit ethernet ports that I link using LACP to get a 2 gigabit connection.
- LogEx
I want to know where I can buy that PC. :) I'm a Mac guy but some of my new code requires windows.
- mikepk
Wintel vs Macintel, you mean. There's very little difference these days between a Mac branded PC and any other higher end PC.
- Alex Scoble
Actually, Wintel doesn't cover it, either, Alex, because there are other processor manufacturers for PCs now.
- Spidra Webster
What is the specific model/manufacturer of that PC? Intrigued.

Depends on what are you going to do with it. If you're going to use adobe products, get a Mac. If you're going to be gaming, and everything else can be done in the Windows PC.
- Alfredo
Oh Come On, everyone knows the price of aluminum is through the roof these days... ;)
- Joshua Schnell
This comparison is of a computer with Intel proc and presumably Windows, therefore Wintel is fine. And Mac is the name that Apple has named their computer, so that is fine too. Alex, you're right that PC is too general of a phrase to use correctly, but Wintel vs Mac for this comparison already encodes all the necessary distinction -- you don't really need to add "Macintel" except to belabor your point.
- Chieze Okoye
I can vouch for the Mac Pro being the winner as that is what I'm typing from right now: running OS X with two Windows 7 VMs smoothly chugging along for development, testing, and general Windows goodness.

Wintel is so 1990's. Doesn't make sense if there's an AMD processor in there too.
- Rodfather
Rodfather says more clearly what I was saying upthread.
- Spidra Webster
The architecture is (essentially) the same. (Do most Windows machines have EFI instead of BIOS now?) It's Windows versus Mac on the x86 side. On the other hand, there are probably lots of Mac users who still own PPC Macs, so Mactel vs MacPPC is still a valid distinction.
- Victor Ganata
My memories of the 8-bit world are vague, but did people ever refer to Apple, Atari, Commodore, IBM, and Tandy computers as PCs, or was PC strictly an IBM thing?
- Victor Ganata
It was first IBM PC's. Like when they had the 8086 processor. Back then I just called them IBM's even if it wasn't made by them. Commodore's were PC's too but everyone just called them Commodores.
- Rodfather
Tandy's were 'different' though. So everyone called them Tandy's. They had the graphics edge and could run King's Quest with more colors :)
- Rodfather
Actually I don't think people really said PC (until the IBM PC was released) but I do seem to remember that people called them all personal computers.

- Victor Ganata
"Wintel is so 1990's. Doesn't make sense if there's an AMD processor in there too." Ah, but Rodfather, there isn't an AMD in this comparison, so Wintel is fine. Maybe AMDows if AMD suits your fancy for a different comparison. In any case, it's just to get words that encode the distinction more accurately than PC vs Mac (even though the meaning is already clear enough, and this particular point all just boils down to prescriptive-linguist nitpicking).
- Chieze Okoye
I tried configuring a Dell server to similar specs, although I can't figure out how to customize it to get 2 quad-core CPUs, and the biggest screens they offer are 22". It comes out to $5,549 pre-discount, so I guess you still save about $1,500.
- Victor Ganata
Ah, I figured it out. It actually comes out to $7,079 pre-discount if you get a similarly spec'ed machine from Dell. So what I've learned here is that the only way to save a buttload of money is to build it myself.
- Victor Ganata
Wintel is like saying 'Cherry!' or 'Gnarley!' It's over dude.
- Rodfather
Chris, but how many people are still running NT on their DEC Alpha? Probably a lot less than the number of people who still run OS X on PPC hardware. :D
- Victor Ganata
I don't see how that price is even possible. Even buying used, a Xeon quad-core costs almost $500 each, and the cheapest motherboard I've seen that supports dual Xeons cost more than $200. You're telling me you can 12GB of RAM, a 1.5 TB hard drive, a 512 MB GeForce, two 24" displays, and Windows 7 64-bit for less than $200?!? Where is the van they're selling this stuff out of parked? :)
- Victor Ganata
Question should be with the same amount of money a new PC or a second hand Mac?
- Mahmood Padura
Victor: There are probably less people who ever ran NT on an Alpha, in total, then there are people still running OSX on PPC chips.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I think it's bogus. I don't think you can buy a machine with those specs for that cheap, even if you build it yourself, even if you're buying parts used, and even if you're pirating your copy of Windows 7. And if you can, please tell me where so I can get one :)

Oops, I searched for the wrong Xeon quad core. The cheapest price I've seen for the Xeon Nehalem is $1,300 each.
