I actually tried using it on a whim recently. I downloaded mIRC, got connected and quickly found out that I'm way out of touch with the IRC subculture now. Everything was greek to me! I don't know if I'm happy about that or not :P - Charles Bihis

IRC channels are still used to distribute fansubbed anime and manga -- http://gotlurk.net/ is a site that lets you search for IRC bots to download from. IRC was also used to coordinate all the anti-Scientology stuff that was going on a couple months ago.
