"I have been a happy investor in Strum Ruger (RGR) this past year with an almost 50% gain. I will be very happy if your projections on SWHC hold true since my RGR will likely move in tandem."

"Netflix is in the process of beta testing its Watch Instantly feature for Mac computers, and now it’s opened up the test for all users who wish to opt-in. Simply follow this link and you’ll be good to go: http://www.netflix.com/silverl.... There are a few caveats. First, you’ll need to download Microsoft Silverlight, a Adobe Flash-like browser plug-in for playing web video. Second, Netflix is warning that there may be bugs since it is still very much in testing mode. And third, not all movies are available via the Silverlight player."

Smugmug has a better toolset and allows more customization. They also have a dedicated support staff that frequents FriendFeed and Twitter. However, I went with Zenfolio for one reason, the backend photo printer for them is MPIX which is my preferred photo printer. Zenfolio also offered Metallic prints and SmugMug didn't when I was trying to decide. SmugMug recently added the Metallic print option which would make it easier for me to choose them if I was deciding today.
- Mark Anderson
For followup, SmugMug uses EZPrints which is a good printer. I used to use them before I learned about MPIX. I just prefer MPIX for better quality and flat delivery of the prints.
- Mark Anderson
@Mark Anderson -- Thanks for the comparison! I *love* Mpix. Plus, Zenfolio's premium plan is currently $50 less expensive than SmugMug. For now, I'm on a ZenFolio trial to get a feel for it.

A quick post from my trip to Conowingo today. Near the dam area the photographers out numbered the eagles by about 3 to 1. A quick count showed about 2-3 adults and 5-6 juveniles today. It is still a little early in the season. In about a month the eagles will number in the hundreds. Up stream I counted about 10 eagles in the far rocks.

I saw this story and thought of you. You just started so I know your not to blame :-) I can now see why they need someone with your skills. http://www.foxnews.com/story...
- Mark Anderson
Thanks Mark... Yeah, that happened before I started. :-) Though I must say the article is just a bit exaggerated to say the least. Oh well. Considering my last job was with AOL, you kinda used to the press claiming that the world is going to end tomorrow. The black cars and SUVs were there for the annual meetings going on right now.

Paul, you don't know me, so don't make rude guesses. I'm a photographer, and I back up my photos to my Drobo. I also record old movies and cartoons (20s, 30s, 40s) from TV and store them on the Drobo. I've also digitized our library of VHS tapes and DVDs and put those on the Drobo as well. Now when my wife and I want to watch something, we just browse the Drobo and play it.
- Raoul Pop
What is your total storage up to now and how much of that is used on replication.
- CJPhoto
No I don't and yes it was flippant. I apologize. How does this compare to commercially available storage or pass through (ie: Netflix Roku or Vudu) for content storage and playback.
- Paul W. Swansen
Note to self: need Drobo for video, audio, and porn.
- flammable
CJPhoto, I have well over 5TB of storage right now. I haven't added everything up lately, but that's where it was the last time (see this http://www.raoulpop.com/2008...). This is available storage, not total storage, btw, which is bigger, since the Drobo has redundancy built in. Paul, not sure what you mean by commercially available storage, but as for the pass-through stuff, I'd rather have the content locally, available for playback at any time. I like Roku though, it's nice.
- Raoul Pop
Nice Raoul! Feel my envy. The Drobo is on my Must Buy List, currently holding steady in the 2nd position. Its looking like it may make it home around Xmas time.
- Carlos Ayala
Shey, it holds as much as you want it to hold. It's only limited by the current hard drive capacities, since it can only hold 4 drives. Juan, if the Drobo functions correctly, it does make a little noise but nothing that distracts. After all, there are four hard drives in there, and they need to be cooled. I have noticed that if you get a bad unit, the fans will make more noise than usual, and may go into overdrive mode, where they rotate at faster speeds than they need to. In that case, get a replacement.
- Raoul Pop
I should mention I wrote a detailed review of the Drobo last year. It's still good reading if you've got about 10 minutes: http://www.raoulpop.com/2007....
- Raoul Pop
Damn, and I thought I was a glutton at 2 TB available storage.
- Eric P
I love my drobo, one of the best purchases I made last year. I just had one of my 500GB drives die on me this past weekend. Red light flashed on the drobo and a warning box pops up. I removed the drive, went to Best Buy and bought a new 1TB drive and popped it into the drobo. Zero downtime plus now I have more storage.
- Mark Anderson
I can't wait for the promised iTunes integration. I have my Drobo here now, but haven't had the time (or money) to get some harddrives. Yeah, yeah, I know... ;-(
- Holger Eilhard
Had a dream about terabytes last night.
- Mike Reynolds
does anyone know if these can be bought in europe?
- Chris Farrugia
@Chris - You can get them in Germany and their PR department is actually in the UK, so I guess it's at least available there too.
- Holger Eilhard
Whether you're away from home or just can't make it to the polls, voting absentee lets you make sure your voice is heard.
- Bryan Villarin
I have been voting absentee for over 10 years. I tried getting out to the polls and I usually failed. Since I went absentee I have never missed an election. The best part is you can sit at your computer and research all those ballot measures and lesser known local issues while voting so you can make an informed decision.

I love the metallic prints from mpix.com and I'm happy to hear that smugmug (via ezprint) now has the metallic paper. I setup my portfolio at zenfolio because they had the metallic and smugmug didn't. Now I'm thinking of switching over to smugmug since they have better website customization.
- Mark Anderson
Voted: 2 - originals and backups (both on site though). Trying to figure out where to take them off site and how. Looking forward to your series :)
- Justin Korn
WHS duplicates my entire photo folder on multiple hard disks. Smugmug holds an offsite copy of some of my images. I'm thinking of using Jungledisk or somthing for real offsite stuff, but can't decide.
- Roberto Bonini
The problem with cloud storage is that it doesn't scale. I have about 500 gb of photos plus assorted other files. It would take months to get them all online, and weeks to download them again should I need them. Currently I switch out an external hard drive once a week which I keep at my parents house... I try to keep it synced via VPN but the connection is too slow to keep up with my changes and new files.
- Eric P
4 - originals plus 3 backups. One backup is always off site.
- Patty Hankins
4 - original, rsync to local NAS, rsync to office network offsite, mozy.com
