Just a little more thought could have been put into this. How about placing the search box below the Following | Followers | Updates and above Home? IN the side bar that is already there? Plenty of room for it, instead of grabbing more screen real estate. With nothing but a huge empty space below the RSS feed link, there's no reason to step on more of a user's background image.
