#BS1015, ive found a journal but im not able to get the full article, the information i have extracted is enough for my essay on 'the biological importance of water.' From the journal i can work out the author and who he works for, I’m aware that i can’t reference it as a full journal, but would using the author and the website address as be a...
I don't understand how you have managed to get 'enough information' from this source if you haven't read the paper. Are you using the abstract?

yes, the first 2 pages are given but the rest is not, ive found a small bit which backs up one of the ideas in my essay, i just wanted to know how i would go about referencing it, would it be as a website or as a journal article?

#BS1003 when referencing a textbook, do we need to put the authors name in the main body of text (like a journal) or do we just number it and refer back to the number in the references?
We require you to use the "Harvard" referencing system so it is author(s) surname and year in text NOT a number-based system. Have you done the online referencing tutorial? See http://www2.le.ac.uk/Members...
- Dr Chris Willmott
Yes, reference it just like a journal with the publishing year and the author(s). Another method of referencing uses numbers but we are supposed to use the 'Harvard system of reference'. The numbers could be useful while writing the essay as the system takes less time to write up but you would have to replace the numbers with the proper references in the end.
- Manni
Sorry to disagree with @Manni but using numbers then switching to names is a recipe for disaster - go straight to surnames
- Dr Chris Willmott
when referencing do we have to give the page number it was taken from, im aware that we do this for images and diagrams but do we have to do it for text?
- Manminder Singh Somal
If it's from a specific page, then yes (Jones 2007:44). If it's over a few pages then you reference the range of pages (Smith 2005:18-23).

#BS1003 essay, in part 3.) building blocks: cell structure and diversity. What are we supposed to write about? Any clues would be very helpful right now!
I think for cell diversity you have to talk about the different types of cells i.e eukaryotic e.t.c and how they differ..

#BS1003 essay, can we copy out tables which show the infomation required for a subtopic of the essay? and does this count towards our final word count?... (the table will be referanced)
It does. If you send a group of people a direct message, comments on the thread appear in real time. (People need to be subscribed to you to send them a DM in order to stop spam).

#BS1010, Ive had a Google reader account for about a week now but i didnt know we had to feed articles onto Friendfeed (watched the feedback video and now found out!)...how would i go about doing this?
Is anyone else struggling with the questions on the liver for the #BS1003 practical write up? Is there a website or specific textbook we should be using, preferably a website since i dont have a textbook yet!
I especially liked the overly long and awesome formual!

I think ive finally got to grips using the Pubmed and ISI website for #BS1010, are there any other sites recommended for students to use when we get down to actual coursework?
I found it difficult counting the blood cells in the time restraint given to us during the #BS1003 practical, what method would you recommend is the best to use?
Don't forget, you need to subscribe to Dr Cann and the other lecturers for this module! You can find their details on Blackboard. Also, don't forget to use your module tags (e.g. #BS1015 ) - you can use that link to see other posts related to that module!
