Hrm. I dunno. Little indie movies like that? Hrm.
- Derrick
Do you like the Whit Stillman movies, Marianne? Last Days of Disco, Barcelona, Metropolitan?
- Meg V. Meg
I liked Metropolitan a lot (was it laurax who insisted I watch it?) - I think it is less uplifting (gah, I hate that word) in overall outlook than Station Agent & Ed's Next Move though? Or maybe I was just bummed about something else when I was watching it and am misremembering...that is the right *sort* of thing though. I need to end up with a smile on my face at the end...
- Marianne
Hmmm. *adds Last Days of Disco to her mental queue*
- Marianne
Metropolitan is my least favorite of his films, though you're right, they're not exactly uplifting. Have you seen Happy Go Lucky? Some people hate the main character, but I loved her after the first few scenes.

Upliftinggggggggg...upliftinnnnnnnnng....hm
- Meg V. Meg
How about Danny Deckchair? In addition to a sweet, happy-ending story, it's got some lovely scenery shots of Australia.
- Kirsten
Little Miss Sunshine, would be another film I liked along the same lines. Or Rushmore. (I feel so predictable, suddenly.)
- Marianne
*adds those films to the list, hasn't seen either and is intrigued*
- Marianne
(The Royal Tenenbaums is along a vector, or Lars and The Real Girl, but would be wrong. House of Yes, another great movie, also wrong for this.)
- Marianne
I adore Friends With Money. I vaguely recall it being uplifting? Maybe not. I don't think I watch uplifting movies, now that I think about it, so my work here is probably done.
- Meg V. Meg
You know, I thought Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was uplifting (though not what I'm looking for). It's a weird thing.
- Marianne
Oh, what about Me, You, and Everyone We Know? (jambina, do you think FWM is uplifting? I am not sure)
- Meg V. Meg
Children of Heaven (Iranian) or Poetry (Korean) -- if you can deal with subtitles......
- αnnα vαȵ scoyoç
meg - i do. or at least i feel good after watching it?
- jambina
thanks all. have consortial loaned several of these, will report back (and scoop up new ideas for stuff to watch).
- Marianne
Oddly I would put Manhattan in this category.
- bevedog
I found Last Days of Disco uplifting because I was so high on the beauty of Chloë Sevign and Kate Beckinsale for days after.
- bevedog
:) It's the first one I ordered. Won't say they didn't have anything to do with that. You know my feelings about Woody Allen, so Manhattan remains off the menu...
- Marianne
Kicking and Screaming (not the soccer one, the Noah Baumbach one)
- Meg V. Meg
Elling, Submarine, Terri, Schulze Gets the Blues (if you can stand subtitles), Heavy
- LibrarianOnTheLoose
I have a pile of movies from this thread next to my dvd player. Highly intrigued, though I think breakfast will come first.
- Marianne
Halfway through FWM, I was thinking "I WANT ALL THESE PEOPLE TO DIE OR AT LEAST GO AWAY." But, by the end, I had a goofy little affectionate smile on my face. Thumbs up.
- Marianne
Kicking and Screaming was kind of charming, but didn't hold my attention. I think it was me, not them. I'm watching the director's cut of Russell Crowe's Robin Hood now, which seems to be more my speed at the moment. Also, it has Alan Doyle singing sea shanties in it, which is always good.
- Marianne
The sound levels in Kicking and Screaming are terrible. It's a crime.
- Meg V. Meg
I wonder if "Adventureland" would fit this bill? http://www.imdb.com/title... Shanon watched it, and I only watched it with one eye, but liked what I saw and wished I'd paid more attention. It has Jesse "Mark Zukerberg" Eisenberg and Martin "Bill from Freaks and Geeks" Starr both of whom I love, and the girl from Twilight isn't annoying. I guess it's directed by the guy who did "Superbad," but it has a very different feel.
- bevedog
Happy Go Lucky was marvelous, though it had more of an edge to it than it let on, ennit? Weirdly, I had to watch Kinsey for work, to see if the DVD repair was successful, and it kind of almost fit the bill too. I wouldn't've expected that.
- Marianne
OK, I was way skeptical about Whit Stillman fitting into this category, after Manhattan, but Last Days of Disco TOTALLY does. Probably because when the characters got all depressing, the soundtrack was still relentlessly cheerful and comforting. #bornin77

Danny Deckchair didn't work for me in spots, but it also (far more importantly) had moments of outright greatness. Kind of like Babe (the pig movie) in that way.
